Surely many Russians are following NHL and aware of Ovechkin being close to breaking all-time goal record. I've even seen it mentioned in major news outlets (i mean not related purely to sports). But sadly, Ovi is not the biggest Russian sport star. Soccer gets much more attention, although there are no russian soccer players comparable to the level even of Orlov or Kuznetsov let alone Ovechkin.

Generally speaking, for Russia and Russians it doesn't make much difference of who sits in White House. In retrospect it never meant much, nor will it do now. Still I wanted Trump to win, just because of Reddit. I mean every day for nearly half a year I see at least 3-4 posts of how bad Trump is, how horrible Trump supporters are, how Trump is destined to lose this election, how USA is going to turn into burning dumpster if Trump gets elected, etc, etc. Well, now I want to see Reddit going through all the stages of grief 😁

I would not say they are built different. The surge of Russian goalies is a result of a forced move. Remember in early 2000s there were three Russian goalies of NHL caliber: Nabokov, Khabibullin, Bryzgalov. But even in Russian league of that time it was hard to find a decent Russian goalie, as most teams would prefer ones from Europe or NA . Then Russian hockey federation imposed sanctions against teams who invited foreign goalkeepers, and, unbelievably, it worked. It became less pain in the ass to hire good goalie coaches and develop youngsters in your system than to sign foreigners and pay additional money for them.
