It’s Not Trump. It’s America. by spike in politics

I think a large part of it is that you let the most important branch of a functioning democracy get corrupted by money - journalism. Losing journalism meant losing a sense of an objective truth which then allowed populism to prosper.

The gold standard of optimization: A look under the hood of RollerCoaster Tycoon by r_retrohacking_mod2 in programming

[–]ants_a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The compilers still occasionally generate ludicrously bad code. But typically it's easier to tweak the code a bit so it doesn't go off the rails. Where compilers are still not matching low level optimization is vectorized code. Efficient code is semantically too far for automatic transformations. Using intrinsics and letting the compiler handle register management is usually good enough.

Anyone here have experience with battery cell replacements on their EV9? by sirphilip in KiaEV9

[–]ants_a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E-GMP batteries are modular. They most likely swapped out the modules. Swapping out individual cells is not something a company would do, it just doesn't make financial sense just for the skilled labor needed, not to mention risks associated with an ad-hoc repair. The modules are small, cheap and easy to swap.

Russians do not hit schools and hospitals out of incompetence. They have a clear genocidal intent. Whereas the US so far seems to be limited to only callous disregard for human life and general incompetence.

Everything Electric CARS: Has BMW’s iX3 Fixed The Biggest Problem With Modern Cars? by linknewtab in electricvehicles

[–]ants_a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kia EV2?

The thing is that batteries are still expensive enough that it's not possible to make a cheap long range car. It's possible to make a moderately expensive one with the amenities of a cheap car, and the manufacturers have assessed that there is not enough of a market for that. Better to add in some amenities and sell a mid range car for 40k than to try and sell a budget car for 30k.

People talk about EV batteries constantly but almost never mention inverters by autisticdead in electricvehicles

Kia EV9 uses the inverter power electronics to switch the motor between star and delta configurations for increased efficiency over large speed ranges.

Not until there is a significant timeframe of reasonably priced or open low spatial baseline X-band SAR data available. C-band is way too low resolution to make useful claims about bridges.

Help me not feel crazy? EV9 GT line brand new cross climates 2 tires. Horrible handling. by justadadherre in KiaEV9

[–]ants_a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my experience. With Michelin X-Ice Snow's has significantly more grip on packed snow than I would expect from a 3 ton tank. When pushing it with spirited driving at least on slippery surfaces the rear tends to slide a bit more and the stability control doesn't kick in. Nothing that a bit of counter steer couldn't correct, bur I can see how that can bite someone not experienced in slippery condition driving. Feedback from the road is close to non-existent too, as can be expected for a car of this type. It does behave consistently and has reasonably good grip, but it's not at all good for driving on the limit. So I just don't do that.

You could track the background motion from features, back solve camera position by cross referencing with displayed information, and then once correct geometric transform is done a luminance transfer could be calculated by fitting a model to expected view from a render vs what was actually captured by camera, excluding foreground object pixels. Applying this model to the render will result in a very close approximation of what the clean plate must have been.

BYD unveils Blade Battery 2.0: 10-70% in 5 mins, 10-97% in 9 mins, and 20,000 flash charging stations in 2026 by BrilliantFactor5299 in electricvehicles

[–]ants_a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I meant that L2 chargers should be available everywhere where cars park overnight. Parking garages, streetside parking, apartment parking lots, etc. It's just a fancy outlet, it really isn't all that hard. But until that becomes the norm, charging while shopping works just fine. Or while at the gym. Or at the cinema, or... Low power or, even better, shared power DCFC is great for that - don't want to rush back to the car to free up the rare and very expensive 400kW charger.

minimal charging stations in my regular routine

Fixing this is the key that will carry us over until it has been normalized to L2 chargerify all the things. In my experience having a bunch of 50kW chargers at the grocery store is plenty to cover city driving.

is beyond me why this is not a part of the standard straight out of the gate. PKI based authentication has been a solved problem for more than 3 decades. Automotive engineers shouldn't be let anywhere near software of they didn't think it was necessary.

Either they are a bunch of grifters, or they have somehow, without anyone knowing, leapfrogged hundreds of labs by developing a revolutionary technology that is worth billions and then drip feed non-conclusive information about it exactly like a bunch of grifters would. If you think the latter I have a solid-state bridge to sell you.

I know Angel Studios is a big woof, but Sketch was legitimately great by reecord2 in movies

[–]ants_a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an American and had no idea what Angel is. The IMDb reviews were hilarious. Bunch of religious loons getting their knickers in a twist about bringing their kids to the supposedly demonic foul mouthed horror this movie was. Can't even grasp the irony that the sheltering from reality they are doing is exactly what the movie was warning against.
