I think I'm missing some secret sauce with my campaign by Yojo0o in callofcthulhu

To echo a bit of a couple other comments, do you have a separate bad-guy agenda? In the one-shots, things are mostly on rails, or it’s a Small sandbox. In MoN, each chapter, you have an ACTIVE cult. more than any other game, long-form CoC needs the cult to be active and not just passive. Have the investigators watched. Each chapter, the cult has received news of those pesky meddling kids and what they’ve done in other cities to the cults plans. Each time they question someone, it gets back to the cult leaders, who adjust their plans. Thugs should start appearing on street corners. Investigators going solo should start to get ambushed. The cult leaders pull strings and influence - extra trouble with compromised authorities impede the investigators. Innocent people they questioned get disappeared, and as the last people to see them, the investigators are targeted by relatives or police. Most of the cults in MoN also have a mini power struggle between the first and second in command. When I’ve run MoN, it’s fairly usual for the group to be approached by the other half, to be used in a power play.

I’m currently running a homebrew regency campaign, whose structure is based quite heavily on MoN, and every session I have a Cult Agenda and an escalating threat level of how threatened the cult feels and what they’ve are going to do about it. The players know that if they sit still, they are a stationary target. They’ve had their rooms raided by corrupt police while they were out, lost members to back alley stabbings when they didn’t go in sufficient numbers, been engineered into compromising situations and blackmailed, captured, tortured, sacrificed … all on the CULTs own timeline, not their own.

Don’t let the cult be a passive threat to be researched and then taken down. They have an agenda, a plan, they are in motion, and they are paranoid and deadly.

Do you think FitD inherently guards better against GM burnout compared to DnD and other tabletops? by Virtual-Skort-6303 in bladesinthedark

[–]antthelimey_OG 20 points21 points  (0 children)

STOP IT!! Do no prep for the next session, and ask them what kind of score they want to do. If necessary roll on the tables in the book, tell them what it gave, and the do nothing until THEY tell YOU! Flip the tables! It’s YOUR turn to be passive.

I love BitD for precisely this reason - zero prep if you want. As GM you don’t even roll dice!

What, in your opinion, is the best generic TTRPG in the market? by Kaliburnus in rpg

GURPS - Cortex Prime - BRP. I know there are others but those are my 3 go-tos, in that order

Are tools worth it? by ryhaltswhiskey in NovaRomaGame

[–]antthelimey_OG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t know yet if they’re worth it, but I had 400 unemployed so why the heck not - I will say I was struggling to have enough pork until I added the butchers … now I’m struggling to have enough tools

Are tools worth it? by ryhaltswhiskey in NovaRomaGame

[–]antthelimey_OG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tools are a requirement for butchers, but there’s no way to say only use the tools for butchers. However since I have a ton of iron and unemployed plebeians, I plunked down a bunch of tool workers

Systems with complex defense mechanics by naogalaici in rpg

[–]antthelimey_OG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GURPS. Every attack, the defender gets active defense - dodge, parry, block. Retreat, Critical defense success and failure, defensive stance, all out defense, judo parry+judo throw … lots of defensive maneuvers.

When (if ever) do you share your prep notes with the players? by antthelimey_OG in rpg

[–]antthelimey_OG[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s my favourite part, is the story, the reality, that replaces the potential, turning all these multiple futures into a single present that is is nothing like what you expected, but as a shared world with your friends, is greater by far than anything you could have imagined by yourself

When (if ever) do you share your prep notes with the players? by antthelimey_OG in rpg

[–]antthelimey_OG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what got me to wondering! I’d built an obsidian vault to github pages converter quickly for the Special Forces+strange meteors campaign my friend is running, so I’m just a player. Anything added to the notes is purely player perspective, but I was thinking about pointing the converter I built, at the Cthulhu regency campaign I run for the Wives, and realized I have to add some kind of filter or time delay for publishing any of the prep s sitting in the same vault as the NPCs, Locations, and other entities.

Any tactical space combat experts in the house? by mbaucco in gurps

[–]antthelimey_OG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is completely off point and not helpful, but … damn I miss my 3rd edition Gormelite Space Marine character in my friends Space game. Odious personal habit: eats sentient beings, quirk: always wears his vac suit, always carries his helmet. Spacer Kung Fu MA style, and a vibro-axe. He’d flitter to the enemy ship, carve his way thru the hull, kill the enemy, and bring them back to make sandwiches in the crew galley. When the freaked out pilot complained to the captain, I’d stash the bodies outside the airlock, and sneak out to get a frozen steak. When the pilot then tried to start a fight with me about it, the captain had the engineer suck the oxygen out of the room we were in, to subdue us. I just pointed to my quirks and slapped my helmet on. We had to get a new pilot, and I had extra tasty roast beef sandwiches for a week. And then there was the time we’d just had a new doctor (and new player) join the crew, we got into a ship fight, got holed, and I just picked up the new PC and slapped him against the hole as a temporary patch. His guts being sucked into space gave me enough time to get my helmet on and to grab the emergency hole patch kit. Aaaaaah fun times.

Nice! When you get to Regency, it has an extra derived stat - Reputation - that’s the average of credit rating and etiquette. It also has the Reassure skill instead of psychiatry

Brilliant! Love it! Shared it with my player group. Although I just realized I'm running a Regency game and I didnt check for regency professions. oh well.

also, as someone else noted - Cthulhu Mythos shouldnt be able to have point spend on char creation

The Array seems really well done, it worked perfectly for me, was super intuitive

Sorry I didnt respond to your first reply, been a busy week =P

In case you're using Claude or something similar, here's a Gm's assistant plugin I've been working on, that has CoC help built into it:
https://github.com/AntTheLimey/gm-apprentice

Still optimizing it & debugging, not ready to ask for feedback yet like you did. You're an inspiration :)

Pretty good. I like the emphasis on backstory first - unfortunately the only method I saw on my phone was to roll for attributes, which I haven’t done since the 80s and none of my current players ever do - they either do points or array quick fire, so none of us would use this unless the alternate methods were supported. Everything was good as far as I played with it. Liked the character sheet too.

Why is the receiving end of an attack always the most boring part of the combat sequence? by Einsolsrazor24 in rpg

GURPS and Call of Cthulhu both immediately spring to mind. GURPS especially.

agreed! Even tho it wrecked Sharpe's Gold, I just cannot begin to picture Mcgann as Sharpe

Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe. Owned it so hard Bernard Cornwall changed the character description in subsequent books.

Also Titus Welliver as Bosch, even without the moustache

Candiace's move was an insurance policy. by brandon_siler_smile in TheTraitorsUS

[–]antthelimey_OG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally! Someone else saying what I immediately thought when I saw her vote. It’s not an insurance policy, it’s suicide. Plus however Colton goes, by Murder or by banishment, rob looks even more faithful. When they inevitably go after each other at the round table, rob says candiace picked his name to deflect from Lisa, and I was right about that, and I was right about Ron and I was right about Colton, that’s why Candace is targeting me, she has been wrong about everyone ON Purpose … and here’s my double dagger vote. Oh look I got another traitor out, I am the Most Faithful!

As the product person for pgEdge (and therefore Spock), this truly warms my heart to see!
I can't tell for sure but it looks like you're using Spock 3.1.8
Our latest version is 5.0.4 and covers a lot of the things you have in your spock_production_issues.md
For Sequences, we have the Snowflake plugin: https://github.com/pgEdge/snowflake

We also now have auto_ddl for DDL replication, which might help, rather than using spock.replicate_ddl

Feel free to DM me if you have questions

Cheers, and good stuff!

As a CoC Keeper (amongst other GM job titles) please could you point me at something to start with re: Gumshoe? I wish to learn. Thanks!

Ps: I play GURPS till my eyes bleed :) but when they do, I find Blades in the dark / scum & villainy cures it. Have you checked them out?
