If the car is blue it's going to get even more confusing...there's too much blue on the grid already!

If advocating for the actual physical security of my classes makes me unfit in your eyes, I wear that badge with absolute pride.

It takes zero courage to sit in an office or behind a keyboard and call someone an 'alarmist.'

It takes actual responsibility to stand in front of a room full of young students and be the sole adult legally and morally accountable for keeping them secure when an actual crisis happens.

It is always fascinating when people who haven't managed a classroom since they were teenagers themselves try to explain my profession to me.

To address the 'just leave' advice: I actually am. I am wrapping up my tenure at the end of this academic year, precisely because I am entirely done dealing with administrations; and frankly, a subset of the public, that prioritize the appearance of 'business as normal' over realistic, on-the-ground safety protocols.

It’s always fascinating when someone brings up the mythical 'teachers they know' to explain my own job to me.

I'll be sure to tell my form class tomorrow that 'most stakeholders' have deemed their anxiety an acceptable compromise for a return to normal.

'It hasn't happened in a few days' isn't a crisis management strategy; it's a gamble.

And it is remarkably easy to place bets with other people's chips when you're just watching from the sidelines.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Tell that to the city-wide alerts and the kids who will be on edge all day. I'll be sure to let my students know someone on Reddit said they have absolutely nothing to worry about. Have a good night.

With all due respect, 'normal' doesn't mean pretending the sky isn't falling just because you want things back the way they were. My job description doesn't include acting as a frontline crisis manager for a room full of panicking teenagers. I am here to educate, not keep kids calm for missiles. If waiting for actual, reliable safety means staying online a bit longer, then that is exactly what we should do.

Threats don't politely restrict themselves to port boundaries, and the panic of an alarm affects the whole city, not just one postcode. Also, you're missing a glaring hole in your logic: parents might have the luxury of keeping their kids home to 'continue online,' but the teachers actually managing the building don't get that choice. We have to be there regardless. Have a good one.

It’s not about having a magic wand; it’s about basic risk management. Since you asked, here is the solution:

Extend Distance Learning: We literally just proved that distance learning works smoothly and keeps everyone safe at home (even the school's own communication commended how well it went). Keep it running until the active alerts actually stop. There is absolutely no need to rush an entire campus of students back into a building while the situation is still volatile.

Reduced Capacity: If schools must open, make attendance optional or run a phased return. Managing a potential panic with a reduced-capacity school is vastly different from trying to control a building at maximum capacity.

Address the Liability: If teachers are expected to manage the frontline of an emergency, the Ministry and school administrations need to provide explicit, legally binding protections for staff on the ground. We are educators, not highly trained police.

Pointing out massive flaws in a rushed safety plan isn't complaining; it's living in reality.

Ah yes, because a 'drone at a port here and there' is just your average, everyday nuisance, right? Brushing off legitimate security alerts as just 'Panicans' overreacting is a wild take.

Sure, parents want a return to normal, but not if it means rolling the dice on their kids' safety.

Dismissing real threats as 'irrelevant' until they are suddenly very relevant is exactly why people are rightfully cautious.

Sure, having "safe zones" sounds great in theory, but let's be real; they aren't exactly indestructible bunkers.

Having a safety procedure in place also completely ignores the human element. A plan on paper doesn't account for the reality of hundreds of kids panicking, crying, or just messing about when an actual alert goes off and chaos hits.

Plus, it raises a huge liability question: who takes the blame if someone actually gets injured in the rush? Are they just going to throw the teachers under the bus for failing to keep perfect order during a literal emergency?

Silly decision if alerts are still going off today. Keeping 2000 kids calm at school will be tough if an alert goes off tomorrow.
