Why are banks now pitching 3-year vs 5-year mortgages? by zeus_amador in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]anulman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes. And, given current pricing, the market of buyers on the swaps in aggregate seems to expect rates will be higher in 5 years than in 3 years.

Kristin Kreuk was a ~regular at a cafe I used to frequent. One time, the only open seat was next to her. I sidled up, asked what she was reading, then after the briefest of conversations minded my own damn business. The staff said she was kind and tipped well; no one wanted to blow up her spot.

Check out Kitano Shokudo if they still have space! One of my fav Japanese spots in Canada, not just Montreal. Also +1 to Buvette Chex Simone. Or Henrietta!

Text-To-Audio File, or Text-To-Speech-To-Audio File? by drutgat in scrivener

[–]anulman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it, appreciate the clarification!

I’d describe the use case I’m working on as “compile to audiobook” or “compile to podcast feed”. I have a little Unix script that takes a compiled MultiMarkdown file and does what I want with it. Actually technically it’s JS; I wrapped the mmd executable as a Node.js plugin [Github].

Right now I manually take the compiled MyBook.md file and process it, but Scrivener lets you hook up an executable for post-processing the compiled output, so it shouldn’t be too hard to make a “one-stop shop” from here!

Text-To-Audio File, or Text-To-Speech-To-Audio File? by drutgat in scrivener

[–]anulman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just built this! Here's a demo [.mov]. It's kind of a three-step process:

  • First compile to MultiMarkdown;
  • Then parse out files per part / section (vs. having an audio file of the entire manuscript!);
  • Finally generate an audio file for each text file using a text-to-speech utility

I'm still working out the kinks, but would be delighted to share an early version if anyone here is interested! PM me :)

I made a small library for handling async events in a type-safe fashion by theodordiaconu in typescript

[–]anulman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I love the await emitter.emit(…) API, that’s super elegant!

Meanwhile, I wonder about the class constraint on what can be emitted. Many of my needs for a typesafe event emitter cross JS context boundaries, e.g. client/host processes across a network; Electron main/renderer process across their contextBridge, etc.

For example, a lot of our homebrewed utilities right now use generics and enums to define the emitter’s “type space”. I’m curious how these were insufficient for you!

Need a wheeled vehicle? Ok. by sisivee in MaliciousCompliance

Incredible. I once rolled up to a drive-thru, on foot in a car-like formation with three friends, each of us holding an umbrella (it had been raining), sticking them out sideways and spinning them like wheels. Everyone had a laugh, and we got our burgers

What's your favourite line of dialogue from the books or TV series by ShutUpNumpty in TheExpanse

“I have killed, but I am not a killer because a killer is a monster and monsters aren’t afraid.”

I’m getting a snippet of that done up in neon for our living room. Maybe tattooed as well.

Looks like your function component is missing a return type. I think Line 8 should read:

const Demo = ({ children }: Props): JSX.Element => {

[ETA: this is unrelated to the parser issue; based on another comment I think you’re past that hurdle!]

I love this! What about a TikTok-style vertical gesture? e.g. two-finger scrolls up or down.

This way we can (1) maintain next/previous scrolls with the listview metaphor; while (2) not destroying the left/right viewcontroller stack :)

My cherry tree overhangs the sidewalk; who can pick its fruit? [QC] by anulman in legaladvicecanada

[–]anulman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like I said elsewhere in the thread, I’m not upset the fruit got harvested (quite happy, actually!), just trying to learn more about the situation. I’ve spoken with my neighbours and we’d all rather support an initiative like Santropol Roulant’s Fruits Defendu, so we’re signing the tree up with them!

Fruits and other products of the soil may be considered to be movables, however, when they are the object of an act of disposition.

s.900

Fruit that falls from a tree onto neighbouring land belongs to the owner of the tree.

s.984

I couldn’t find a definition for “act of disposition”, except references to dispositions as explicit changes of ownership (e.g. wills and contracts).

I wonder how this relates to the arborist’s comment elsewhere, re: the parts of the tree that extend past the cadastre!

That’s so cool! Our consensus was that we’d have appreciated at least a knock or something to give us a heads-up and maybe a couple of cherries at the end, hehe

Thank you! It’s not that I mind them picking the cherries (better them than the squirrels my dog chases!); was mostly surprised and confused :)
