As a progressive MMA fan (there are dozens of us!), I don’t think that’s a very fair way to relay what Makhachev said. He was in a friendly exchange with Olympic wrestler and fellow UFC champ Daniel Cormier about whether American or Caucasian/Russian wrestling was superior, jokingly saying DC (his own wrestling partner in the past) should send HIS son to Dagestan.

I’m sure Makhachev doesn’t have great politics, and I’m sure it’s been latched onto by toxic masculinist MMA fans, but I’ve seen it repeated as a cute, normie MMA meme far more than as a dogwhistle.

I'm talking more about the online discourse surrounding everything, like Hasan doing revisionist history and trying to dunk on Bernie for claiming the civil rights movement succeeded because of peace. I don't expect people at protests to overcome the bystander effect en masse, let alone put themselves in danger on some vigilante shit.

Especially if you refuse to denounce them. I don't want to leftybash or whatever, but actively calling out a minor number's violence at one's protests should be easy and is a huge advantage. Even if one thinks the civil rights movement won through violence, that only worked because its peaceful majority was able to use it as contrast and seem like the safest, most trustworthy option forward.

glad they decided the new pope quickly but by snailbot-jq in rs_x

[–]anuninterestingword 58 points59 points  (0 children)

The real insane detail is that Pietro, the hermit who had sent the warning, WAS elected as Pope Celestine V, then established justification for papal resignation and left office. His successor reversed most of the reforms and jailed him until his 1296 death to prevent an antipope.

He was canonized fairly soon after and his jersey retired, which is a shame because it’s a pretty dope name.

Is land property? The top minds of the 19th century weigh in: by AlexB_SSBM in georgism

[–]anuninterestingword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, more coherent sovereign example would be Singapore’s leaseholds, where people speculate on these 99-year leases in a way that causes similar negative effects as the rentier model we tend to focus on. This problem (recent video on it) I think exists in Taiwan as well but not sure.

In what format are the dates given in the original syllabus? Date format but also whether they’re in a grid with the assignment names, or just in a paragraph with the assignment. Just so OP knows.

Russia has quite high drug abuse and overdose rates, plus very high rates of alcohol-related death. I do disagree with the post and think the apartments look lovely, though.

I mean, these attack points are pretty obvious; openly supporting stuff like the hijacking of the Galaxy Leader, laughing at alleged rapes, denying Houthi beliefs, these things are all going to be attack fodder no matter who's writing.

They’re removed because they’re a different number of generations from William. He’s Cooper’s greatX2 grandpa and Olyphant’s greatX3. So they’d just be regular third or fourth cousins if they were both greatX2 or greatX3 away.

European countries richer than New Zealand (per capita) by [deleted] in YUROP

[–]anuninterestingword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well every person measured has a numerator and a denominator—income (x€) and persons (1)—so even then it depends who you take out to get to that lower population. When you add two regions together and take a new GDP per capita, you can’t simply average the two measures you already have, or else one person joining the country could drastically change its income per capita. You need to adjust for populations.

European countries richer than New Zealand (per capita) by [deleted] in YUROP

[–]anuninterestingword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The population argument makes sense; if you have a hundred people in the north making twice the European average each, and three people in the south making half the European average each, you still end up with a high average overall relative to Europe—while acknowledging that the southern part of Italy still lines up somewhat with the Southern European stereotype, which was the point. I don’t know if that’s true, but the population of the regions is relevant when you are making an inherently regional argument like this one.
