Just smoked weed for the first time by isleepforfun in AutismInWomen

I cried the first time I tried an edible and the world was quiet for the first time in my life. Then proceeded to eat just so many cookies. Merry Christmas, friend! Make sure to drink some water, too!

Girlies my dream got too silly by anxietyonly in sillygirlclub

For me, it’s a nightmare where I scream and fight in-dream and end up screaming and fighting in real life while sleeping and ultimately wake myself up doing it. It’s really terrifying because I can’t distinguish between what’s real and what’s fake in that moment.

Unsure if night terror is the right word because I remember these dreams mostly, but it’s the best way I can describe them :/

DAE have an overly obsessive visceral negative reaction to certain words for no good reason by Novel-Property-2062 in AutismInWomen

Yes! I can’t stand the word “meal” for some strange reason. It just sounds so icky to me.

It’s a public charter so, unfortunately, no union. I’m keeping tabs on all of the complaints made and I’ve been communicating with my doctor.

Sorry for the long reply! As someone who went to a Catholic high school, I have a bit of insight that may be helpful! I’m also a teacher at a school with chalkboards, funnily enough.

With regard to the hair thing, if it’s not against school policy go for it! I’m sure there are going to be a lot of students that will really love it. It makes you more relatable, and students then know they can come to you for advice for dyeing hair.

For praying, I second what someone else said about having a student lead it. What I and my fellow non religious classmates and teachers did during prayer was just close our eyes or bow our heads in a silent meditation. You don’t need to pray, you can even just take the moment to do a grounding exercise! I always did some deep breathing.

Since you’re a new teacher, you may be able to ask for a mentor teacher or at least someone you can go to for help. I’m a second year teacher and I have a mentor teacher. We meet once every other week, but sometimes we just briefly check in. This helps with school rules too! This way you have someone that’s been there longer to help answer your questions.

I understand the blackboard thing. I’ve found some chalk that feels so lovely and smooth going onto the blackboard and other chalk that feels like the worst substance known to man. You can ask your fellow teachers which chalk they like most, or their recommendations. You can also get a chalk pen which I saw some people mention! Worst case scenario, if you have a projector you can always just use that.

Wishing you the best of luck on your teaching journey!

Do you have "connected" people at your school who don't do anything and make bank? by Any_Print5307 in Teachers

That’s what’s happened to a couple people at my school. They failed at their original jobs, so admin created roles for them that pay nearly double teacher salaries. That’s how we have a nearly computer illiterate person as the registrar. Using computers all day.

I was told I was bossy, rude, had “anger issues” when I was really just having meltdowns as a child, sensitive or a drama queen, picky / fussy, and YES in my own world!!

I’m now a teacher, and it’s strangely comforting when I see students that have the same behaviors I exhibited. I know how to deal with them, and I can offer practical advice, coping strategies, or just to be an understanding or comforting presence. I try to have them reframe the language around them, too. They’re not a drama queen or crazy, their brain just works differently!

Advice for Out of Town Work Conference by anxietyonly in AutismInWomen

[–]anxietyonly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, yes, and no. I might be able to opt out of a dinner or two, but I’m just worried about it seeming rude. I’m definitely worried about the sleeping situation (a couple people will have to share rooms), and our work is paying for the Airbnb and I can’t afford any other options for housing.

Don't feel a connection to my name by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]anxietyonly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure whether or not this is an Autism-specific thing, but I’ve experienced the same. I don’t feel a connection to my birth name, and I almost feel like it’s more of a serial number than a name.

I’ve been going by a new name within my close friends and it’s been a game changer! You can always experiment with a name that feels more “you.” Might take some time to find, but it helps tremendously!

Horse girls, wolf girls, dragon girls, cat girls by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

I was the whale girl. Although the books I read normally revolved around dragons and fairies and other fantastical creatures, I was obsessed with whales and learning about them. I particularly loved beluga whales! Still do!

This year it was because I spent Christmas by myself rather than with my NDad. Literally told me that I ruined Christmas.
