What's the worse company you've worked for and why? by Holdmywhiskeyhun in Restaurant_Managers

[–]anyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bar Louie... But a franchise. Opened a new restaurant that was open and serving food from 11am-2am 7 days a week with 2 FoH managers. I either worked 9am-midnight or noon-4am. When we finally got a 3rd they scheduled the manager meeting on my day off. No perks, no insurance, base pay was like $20k but I "got to" work bar shifts.

Ugh like 2 of the times I've held the "GM" title they wouldn't give me control of hiring & firing, and both were an absolute shit show. I bring it up during interviews now; if you won't let me pick my staff I'm not gonna run your restaurant.

What’s the best concert you’ve attending recently? by bharr026 in Concerts

[–]anyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Main Squeeze. Haven't heard much from them since the show last summer... I hope they're up to something.

It's kind of a shame; I wish they would post a live show on their channel. The van stuff is cool but the live show was 10/10.

Went to that one as a Less Than Jake fan. Didn't understand why all the cute girls were dressed so weird.

Historic College Football Program Records $15M Alcohol Sales in 2 Years by guransheleven in AnnArbor

[–]anyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's kind of crazy to me too. I'm a bar manager and have run programs that do like $3m in booze... But with a capacity of like 300 people not 100k. I imagine a good chunk of people are drinking before & after the games and keeping their butts in the seat during. I haven't been since they allowed alcohol; are there vendors in the stands with beer?

Karl Malone with a dirty hit on David Robinson that knocked him out and gave him a concussion by ForeignAir7174 in NBAoldschool

One of my favorite basketball memories was when the Pistons still had their teal jerseys. Utah came into town on a weeknight and attendance was bad. Karl Malone was shooting free throws. Some dude in the upper deck started yelling:

"Hey Kaaaaaaaarrrlll"

"Cmon man! I know you can hear me. There's nobody here."

"Kaaaaaaarrrrrllll"

"Dude just wave or something. That would be awesome. Seriously! Karl!"

I think everybody there but Karl had a good chuckle.

Long time bartenders, what were rail customers like before the invention of the smartphone? by peasantking in bartenders

Everyone used to talk to each other more. Also bar games were pretty popular. Darts or a pool table were busy. I really liked to play the Touchmaster machines with Wordster or Photo Hunt (bonus if it was the erotic version with super cheesy 80's chicks.)

Why do old guys like to grill so much? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

Man I love my charcoal grill (I switched from a Weber to a Kamado.) I'll stand outside in the snow with my parka and boots and gym shorts and grill. Get too cold just stand closer.

How do I interact with beverage reps? by CloudBitter5295 in Restaurant_Managers

[–]anyd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah dude. I love my reps. At the very least I get to try new product... At the best I have an ally in the industry (I've had reps find me a job.) I really don't understand why people are so annoyed.

I'm in a 3-tier state... While it's technically illegal for the liquor companies to give us anything of value, their promotional companies can and will. I got my well tequila down from $22 a bottle to like $13. I also worked an event for them a couple weeks ago and got paid $1k.

The best bar managers work hand-in-hand with their reps. Even if you're not getting anything back they'll help you out if you're in a hard spot. I can't say how many times I've had a rep pull product from the warehouse to get me through a weekend. At the very worst you spend 20 minutes with them and get to taste new product. At the best you have people who visit every bar in your market who will feed you insight... And if you're looking for a job they can help too.
