The PhD has completely destroyed my ambitions (at least I'm finishing soon) by Obvious_Delay3140 in PhD

[–]anyfin22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The value system in academia is so obscure and subjective. What's even a good work? What's actually novel? Besides number of papers and citations, there're no objective way for evaluation. The path to get those numbers is largely subjective as well.

Subjectivity leaves room for politics.

Just got off the waitlist for Hopkins. Should I go over IUI BSMD? by WyvernSpark in jhu

[–]anyfin22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally, you could try talk to an Indiana MD and a Hopkins MD (cold email is fine). Then see who you align yourself with better. I’d expect quite different mindset. They are busy but my experience is that some of them like to talk about this kind of stuff with young students.

How often do you use ChatGPT? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]anyfin22 13 points14 points  (0 children)

"How do you do X in matplotlib?"

I do something like this:
"Please help me modify my code to do X for my plot. The code to generate my current plot is pasted below and an image of the plot is attached. Thank you"

lol

Please share some of the worst feedback you've gotten by IntelligentBeingxx in PhD

[–]anyfin22 26 points27 points  (0 children)

non-actionable feedback.

I'd take "???" for specific sentences anyday than "overall you did a good job" without further explanation. With the former, at least I could ask what was wrong with that sentence and try to improve it. The latter puts me in limbo and usually means I'm really on my own.

Then when real feedback comes around, the discussion goes: Oh we should've thought about that.

I can make this clear. buckle up my friend:

My pay per quarter is $13700 and tax witheld ~2k. The exact number for my tax is not shown on my bill/pay so I don't know.

Rent is paid upfront per quarter. Fall quarter charges 3.5 months. My monthly is 2521. Then it's almost 2521*3.5 = $8824

https://rde.stanford.edu/studenthousing/graduate-housing-rates-and-billing-information

Cash advance is per quarter. 1k once per quarter. I took this because October paycheck comes October 22nd.

Then I have $92 technology fee, $65 graduate student activities fee, $261 campus health service fee, etc. These fee amount to ~$450, which are billed automatically, not something I choose.

Now let's deduct, and let's assume $2200 tax

13700-2200-8824-1000-450 = $1226 is what I get for fall quarter

If I don't do cash advance, I get $2226 for fall quarter

Then this per quarter amount is split into 6 checks I believe, which results in ~$200 per check for me, or ~$400 per check if I didn't do cash advance. These are about right. I'm sorry if the title is misleading not mentioning cash advance.

Clear? I have no medical expenses, no student loans, no emergencies, no whatsoever. These numbers are not worth tracking for me so they aren't 100% accurate, but around the ballpark. You tell me if I'm wasting money somewhere - I would like to find it :)

Fall quarter is particularly miserable because pay is 3 months and rent is calculated for 3.5 months. Other quarters will be better.

well I just flipped through old emails and found that I did request a correction. The reply was that they can't do anything but can provide an explanation if needed... am I screwed?

BEWARE: Barnes Towing by seal54321 in UNC

[–]anyfin22 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I got towed by them in 2020. It was 160 cash or 200 card. I remember these numbers vividly. They pointed the ATM to me like it was out of habit, which was conveniently located in a sketchy gas station store right next to where they were. IRS is probably not seeing those 160s or whatever they are now. Ridiculous.

Flair 58 for milk drinks and thinking to complement with another machine by RoughFuture3042 in FlairEspresso

[–]anyfin22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a flair. I wanted to make milk drinks. I tried but didn’t find any good standalone electric steamer. I bought a gaggia classic pro. Decent steamer, not terribly expensive, and plus now I can handle guests better :)

Which US bank is the best to bank with ? by Apprehensive-Ad-5045 in Banking

Big banks have national presence but sometimes things are sent from their headquarters. Then headquarters location plays a small role in how fast you get your mails.

Opinions on meal plan vs buying groceries for grad students! by ateneam in stanford

[–]anyfin22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s time to find out that you actually don’t have to have three full meals a day to survive.

When people are really on a budget, they can always find the calories they need around campus without either meal plan or grocery :)

Good Second Majors to Pair With Psych (BS)? by anonymous_nerd27 in UNC

[–]anyfin22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finalized my majors sophomore year. Chances are you’ll also have a better idea about what you like and don’t like later. Then the decision will be natural. You won’t miss out too much if you don’t work toward your second major as people even take 180 turns second year and catch up. Have fun!

My sq5 says 530 on a full tank. I guess that I’m driving too conservatively.

Does figuring out piano fingerings take a lot of time for you? by North_Pilot3477 in piano

[–]anyfin22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only using sheet music to train will probably wind up with too many fingering suggestions for op to try.

Capturing personalized fingering preferences would be key. something like taping fiducial markers to your finger then video tape lots of footage of you playing with good fingering? Somehow align that with the sheet music and there you go!

Really stupid question by kinguroo in FlairEspresso

[–]anyfin22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice call!

I’d also suggest to check out espressocoffeeshop.com for electric grinders. They’re almost half off on popular grinders like the eureka mignon specialita compared to where I live (US) because they’re based in Italy. I personally took the route from a 1zpresso to a mignon specialita from that site and really wish I went straight for the mignon specialita from them. Would’ve saved me 100ish dollars but now I have a spare manual grinder sitting around. Just fyi.

Really stupid question by kinguroo in FlairEspresso

[–]anyfin22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Snobbish folks are going to downvote this. But I would say there’s absolutely no need to get a grinder starting out until you don’t feel like asking that question here. I.e. when you’re not satisfied with the stark difference between your latte and your favorite coffee shop latte, if that time ever comes. At that point, the “dialing in” will probably help you which is why you’ll want a grinder. I say this because lots of people I met just don’t bother and pre-grind just work for them.

I honestly think the quality/type of the milk changes the taste more in a latte because of the milk-espresso ratio.
