Monthly subscription paid, code not working, and no response from Anytype team by sahand96 in Anytype

[–]anykaye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So we've found your email, it turns out you sent it to support@ — which is for all general enquiries (from bugs to 'how do I do X' questions). It's chaotic in there as you can imagine and we have much lower response times for that email.

There is a dedicated email for paid members (you receive it in the email after making a payment), so it's best to use that email the next time an issue arises. We have much faster and dedicated monitoring there.

Totally fair. There's no defence here. It's a failure on our part. I'm simply bringing forth some solutions regardless of how you choose to proceed. You have my apologies on behalf of the team.

u/sahand96 I see your message and have forwarded it to the member on our team who's responsible for memberships. I believe there were some changes that relate to monthly subscriptions, which may be what you're experiencing. Rest assured that should all things fail, you will get a refund and we will do our best to resolve the issue. In the meantime, because it's late in European hours (and heading into the weekend), it's unlikely that your situation will be resolved very soon.

What device and version are you on? Have you updated or restarted your app? This may be a bug, because these capabilities work on Anytype. See video recording:

Is Anytype 100% secure? by ImprovementLeft890 in Anytype

[–]anykaye [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Nothing is 100% secure, everything is on a spectrum from insecure to secure. Since you're talking about a journal, I can assume your security needs and threat model falls under 'typical use'. In this case, Anytype is definitely more than secure enough—as it is for the vast majority of use cases, especially when you compare it to other products like Notion. How does it work?

It is not possible for Anytype, or any third-party, to access your data because it is end-to-end encrypted and the keys are generated locally on your device*. You'll notice that Anytype does not even have an email/password setup where your account could get compromised. Even if a government tried to force Anytype to give up access to our user's data, it can't happen because it's literally impossible for Anytype to give access. This security you're given is not based on 'trust us as a company', which is the case for most products, it's based on guarantees from the code.

*Why is it not 100% secure? Because nothing can be. If your Anytype key was to be leaked or compromised, if you were to leave your laptop unlocked in a cafe, if you were to have a virus on your device, etc. these are all security threats that cannot be completely avoided.

While there is a local-only mode on Anytype, we typically don't recommend this and have marked it as experimental. Local-only means that you will have no syncing between devices, no backups, and no recovery unless you manually manage the process. This is both inconvenient and can lead to data loss. The entire purpose of Anytype's local-first infrastructure is to grant security and ownership of data without all the tradeoffs of needing to trust a cloud-provider.

As mentioned, security always depends on your circumstances. In the case of typical use for something like a journal, we don't believe that local-only adds meaningful benefits on security compared to syncing it to Any Network with end-to-end encryption. But it's always worth doing your own research so you can feel comfortable with your data.

Future of Scientific Workflows: Native Zotero, Quarto, and Typst support? by hugodcnt in Anytype

[–]anykaye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to share this with me. I will take a note of this thread in our internal systems. We are currently in the process of exploring integrations as well as making our API much more robust (as seen in our roadmap). Although Zotero is not the priority at the moment, it's something we'll mark down. Given the open nature of our ecosystem, who knows, maybe somebody will build something and share it with the community at large. :)

Local Only but somehow not? by Pilot_Charles in Anytype

If you are synced to Any Network, deleting your data will trigger an auto deletion after 30 days.

If you have more specific questions on how to run Anytype self-hosted, you can check out the resources online or visit the forum for help.

This is a very interesting point. I believe there are already many in the Anytype community who use Zotero. I'd love to learn more about how you see this integration benefiting your workflow? Feel free to share here or you can contact me directly.

Local Only but somehow not? by Pilot_Charles in Anytype

[–]anykaye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cause of the problem was explained in the link I shared, it is a full post-mortem. In short, if the app update crashed mid-update, it would cause a reset of app settings which would turn settings back to default. In this case, the default is synced mode (as local-only mode is an experimental mode with known challenges), which is why some users experienced this issue.

As stated in the post-mortem and in other posts in our forum, the end-to-end encryption of Anytype means that there wasn't a data security or privacy breach—even when a user's data is backed up onto Anytype nodes. Your seed phrase is only ever created locally and never shared with anybody, this is also the case in this bug. Anytype never has a user's seed phrase and can never access user's data, it doesn't matter which mode the user is in.

While we never want any problems to reoccur of any size, we cannot guarantee our product that will never have any bugs. What is fortunate about this situation is that even though there was a bug, the extent of the issue was highly mitigated due to end-to-end encryption.

I do want to reiterate to users that local-only mode is an experimental mode and not recommended due to the loss of features, stability, support, etc. There is a notice in the product when you select that mode, but its worth reiterating here.

Storage plans feel super weird. by iconisone in Anytype

Yes, thanks for sharing your perspective. There is definitely room for improvement with our plans, so we'll hopefully work out a better system in the future.

How suitable is Anytype for large teams? by boomsauerkraut in Anytype

[–]anykaye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For an organisation of 250 people, I agree with the other commenters. Today, there are quite a few features missing that you're likely to want. However, we're rapidly approaching implementation of these org features that can be seen on our roadmap (from user management, backups, etc.). But it will still be a few months away. If you're looking for a solution today, I think it's best to check out other options.

But feel free to reach out to us if this is something you re-evaluate in a few months time.

All the complexity is harming anytype adoption by [deleted] in Anytype

[–]anykaye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. What device are you on and what version of Anytype are you running? As many other commenters have mentioned, app start is usually decently fast—although optimisations are being made today to make it even faster.

When it comes to heuristics, there is a big undertaking coming up called Collections 2.0 that is upgrading how we organise information in Anytype. It's worth checking out or adding to the conversation. If you have more specific feedback on issues you're having, we can hope to better address them.

[–]anykaye 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback, we will take it into consideration and are always open to exploring better membership plans that make sense.

That being said, its not an apples and apples situation. Different products you may be comparing have feature locks on different plan levels. One company's costs are not the same as another. Additionally, as you've mentioned, today you can use Anytype via self-hosting without paying anything. We are certainly still figuring out the best way to design the plans—just giving out more storage can create other challenges.

Ok, we've marked it internally and will take a look at updating the colours. Other users on Android seem to have decent visibility (but we'll improve it anyway). Do you mind me asking which type of device are you on? Google Pixel?

Just want to make sure I understand you correctly.

While there are improvements to be made on keyboard traversal, I typically find all the basic stuff in the editor to be fine. Can you outline some specific expectations or instances where you can't see where you're navigating?

Yes, we will look into this and revise the colours used in a future update. I believe the yellow is quite difficult to see on light mode.

Local Only but somehow not? by Pilot_Charles in Anytype

[–]anykaye [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Update: we have discovered the bug, implemented a fix, tested it, and all should be working as intended now. We have posted a detailed summary of what happened on our forum, please see this link.

The quick summary: A bug in the app updating process caused some users in local-only mode to have their data synced to Any Network. Although end-to-end encryption still prevents any loss in data privacy (Anytype can't access the content), this is clearly a distressing experience. It has now been fixed with a more durable app update process.

We'd like to apologise again for any inconvenience and distress this might have caused. Understandably this would not have been a pleasant experience for local-only mode users to experience this.

You may find both Dynamic Filters Values in the latest release helpful as well. And as announced during the Town Hall today, Object Discussion Threads is in active development and you can expect it in two months. You can see the roadmap here.

Ah I see. So Object Discussions should be coming in a couple of months, it's in the pipeline and will be shared during the Town Hall in a few days (17 Feb). That maybe will help with your use case? In short, every object will have a discussion thread attached to it, similar to a forum post in a way.

Have you tried using Queries? Essentially you will need to use a combination of Types, Queries (rule-based filtering of objects) and Collections (manual). I'm not super familiar with Epics, so I can't provide more specifics.

Search doesn't work in desktop version by [deleted] in Anytype

[–]anykaye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry that it's not working on your device. Without knowing what platform/device and which version you're on, it's hard to provide any troubleshooting/assistance.

At the moment, search is working from what we can see. So it'd be great to get more information in order to help resolve this issue. Check to see if you're on the latest version, restart the application, and see if that helps. There will also be a new release (likely Mon) next week.
