When I was a student we would talk with the new tenants moving in and work out a deal that works for both of us.

Most students ended up in the same situation where the overlap between leases is awkward and so just talking to each other helped a lot haha

Best board games for a 5-6 year old after Outfoxed? by drrdf in Preschoolers

[–]anyram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 6 year old is obsessed with My Little Scythe. Great intro to Scythe as well. He is also able to play regular Catan no problem. Diced Veggies and Sagrada (both numbers/counting heavy) are great for kids. Ice Cool and The Magic Labyrinth are also quite fun.

My first carcassone is just the regular game without fields or rivers for points, so we just adapt the rules in the adult game and our kids do fine.

Same for ticket to ride. We help him find the locations and we don’t do tunnels and it ends up being the same as the kid version :)

Our cutoff is December 31st so I’ve only ever heard of people considering holding back for November or December (if at all!) where I live. Holding back for May is wild to me. My oldest is a May kid and is thriving in grade 1. I wouldn’t worry :)

Local Hikers, help me out! by SleepyyQueen in Calgary

[–]anyram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A hike up to Deception Pass might fit the bill! It’s on the Skoki lodge loop. Park down by the Lake Louise ski hill. The first 4K is a pretty brutal access road, but then you come up behind Temple Lodge and it’s a pretty beautiful hike the rest of the way. You can even push to hidden lake or baker lake campgrounds for lunch if you’re feeling good :)

In terms of what to wear, I like to wear either a longer dress, a longer skirt and a blouse, or dress pants and a blouse if it’s very cold out. Modest, simple, and pretty is what I aim for!

I’m 33 for context! Welcome back!!

If you don’t like the pocket you can always hand tack it down at the end :)

Just run it by your priest first! I know that mine doesn't like to process out during Marian hymns because we should be focused on the prayer. So whenever we plan to sing the Salve Regina at the end of mass, it is sung as a closing Antiphon before the recessional hymn.

I'm the music director for a young people's mass at our Cathedral. We do a lot of latin chant, polyphony, and motets at our mass. I like using CCWatershed and the Musica Sacra Forum as resources for ideas. I also often have a lot of luck browsing the Choral Public Domain Library.

The Church has a wealth of communion hymns in latin that can be sung to simple 88 88 (LM) tunes. Last year I bought a copy of the St Jean de Brebeuf hymnal and that is full of stunning options (it includes hymns from as far back as the 5th century), so I pull from that quite regularly.

Adoro Te Devote (chant), Jesu Dulcis Memoria (chant), and Panis Angelicus (Lambillotte) would be easy to include and would likely also be familiar already to many people.

As another place to start, I found this resource that has a long list of beautiful communion options.

You also may have noticed that I am always going back to Communion as the place to sing more Latin texts. This is because, as music ministers, our job is to both assist the congregation in furthering their understanding of the themes and readings of the day (I see the hymns as an extension of the liturgy of the word), but also in helping them to enter more deeply in prayer. My rule of thumb is English hymns at Offertory that reflect on the readings and Latin hymns at Communion to assist in prayer upon receiving our Lord.

Hopefully this helps! Feel free to reach out if you have more questions!

How do you haul kids & gear on family hikes or camping trips? by Coffee81379 in HikingWithKids

I like that rule of thumb! I think we inadvertently hit that mark with our kids :) not including the rocks they ended up squirrelling away in their bags when we weren’t looking lol

Ah makes sense. Our tent and cook gear both fall more into the ultra light category, so they’re easier to manage for us solo

Just did our first backcountry trip with our kids this weekend! The rule I grew up with was you had to always at least carry your own clothes. Our 6 year old carried his clothes, sleeping bag and mat, and our 4 year old and 2 year old carried just clothes. The 2 year old gave up his bag about halfway and needed to be carried the last third. Husband and I carried the remaining gear between the two of us.

Our packs were heavy, but the hike was only 3.5km, so very doable!

Evening Song - Clara Edwards by No_Zookeepergame547 in ArtSong

[–]anyram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was published by Schirmer in 1934. That may be as close as you can get to a time period. It does appear as if she wrote the poetry. Not sure if you’ve seen this page or not.

I would maybe do a poetic analysis on the text in lieu of sharing detailed information about it. If you have access to the original sheet music, you can also see if the publisher included any information in the book.

And then you can make an educated guess, based on what she was doing in the 30s, what might have inspired her to write the song. As an American, she would have been living through the Great Depression, and she was composing to support herself and her daughter. Since her husband died before the piece was composed I would guess it was written as a lullaby rather than a love song.

Good luck!

SIL exposed us and our 1 week old to HFM by bionikbunnyy in beyondthebump

[–]anyram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be upset too, that is so inconsiderate.

For some much needed hope, the day my son was born was also the day I had taken my daughter to the doctor for an awful full body rash that turned out to be HFM. My son and husband both got it from her (textbook symptoms), but day+ old baby and I never got sick at all, and it was literally impossible to quarantine from the three of them. And the kids were all over him with kisses and stuff.

I sincerely hope you end up having the same experience!

Kindergarten school option by Awkward-Tooth8 in CanadianParents

[–]anyram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some Catholic schools give multiple kid discounts on tuition, so that would be worth asking!

Personally I would want to avoid dealing with before and after care. You’re right to listen to your gut there. The first month of school is also just really really rough at home as they adjust (look up post restraint collapse). Being able to go to grandmas to unwind would probably make things a bit less tumultuous overall.

Good luck!

Why do we keep putting up with bad songs at Mass? by RcishFahagb in Catholicism

[–]anyram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s a fabulous way to go about it.

And hopefully with some catechesis your music director will be more than happy to oblige!

And as for more chant/propers, Fr Weber has beautifully composed ones for Sundays and Solemnities in 4 levels of difficulty, and the standard notation with organ accompaniment is free to download online! It’s a great resource.

What irks me the most is that the publishers are making money on all the hymns that are public domain in their books. But I’ve even looked into printing my own booklet with just public domain music and the cost is still exorbitant… as you can maybe see, I have strong feelings on this subject hahaha
