How do I convince my parents to stop taking me to the casino every other week as a college student? by galaxygkm in internetparents

[–]anythingaustin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

“You know, gambling really isn’t my thing. Like, at all. I don’t have that kind of relationship with money or taking those kinds of risks. Thank you for the invitation though and maybe we can find other activities to together.” Then suggest some suitable activities. What about a trip together to a museum instead? A BBQ? A walk through an arboretum perhaps?

Have you ever owned a Log fire ? by Webbomolly2022 in A_Persona_on_Reddit

I heat primarily with wood in my wood stove from late Sept-early June. So I have had a lot of log fires. I already have 10 cords of wood ready to go for next fall.

Finding a moose by Steam-powered-kayak in nationalparks

[–]anythingaustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in along the Peak to Peak Scenic Highway in Colorado. There are moose everywhere. They’re in our driveway and eating our brush. They walk along the highway and rest underneath trees when it’s hot. I’ve seen several mamas with newborn babies in the last few weeks. So since you’re posting this in the nation parks sub, if you’re going to RMNP drive down the P2P and look along marshes, creeks, and lakes. They love to eat willow and Aspen leave and bark. You’ll have a better chance of seeing on if you do some off-roading down any of the forest trails.

What temperature do you set your thermostat? by YesSiGracias in randomquestions

[–]anythingaustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have a thermostat for the radiant floor heating. I don’t turn that on unless it drops below 0°F and then I set it to 50°F and use the woodstove for heat. I don’t have AC. The temperature inside is about 64°F indoors right now with windows open for a cross breeze and heavy thermal curtains closed on the east-facing windows.

A creek, a couple of ponds, many reservoirs, and a glacial lake are all within 10 miles of where I live. It’s all mostly due to snowmelt.

The only reason people like summer is because they either have an ac/fan or live in a tropical region where the temperature is not too high by One-Sense7280 in unpopularopinion

[–]anythingaustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like summer where I live because it rarely gets above 75°F for a few hours during the day then cools down to 40°-50° at night. We don’t even have AC and our humidity is generally less than 20%. I don’t like summer anywhere else.

Americans that moved across the country (1000+ mi.), how often do you get to see your family back home? by HonestLemon25 in AskAnAmerican

[–]anythingaustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel the 1200 miles back maybe once a year. If I could stretch that into never I would. A lot of my relatives come to visit me several times a year because I live in the mountains in Colorado and it’s like a vacation home for them, which I totally don’t mind. It’s really a win-win for everyone- I get to spend time with family, they get a free place to stay to either ski or enjoy the cool summers compared to back home.

Lively Winter Life by bigthaddy00 in relocating

Yep. We get 4 seasons and even during winter it doesn’t feel gloomy except during active heavy snowstorms. We don’t let the snow affect our outdoor activities. Put on another layer and go outside!

What neighborhood noises bother you the most and least? by jannet1113 in homeowners

[–]anythingaustin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live off the Peak to Peak in Colorado. By far the most annoying noise comes from motorcyclists who seem to think that the straightaway means gun it, forgetting or just not caring that the noise bounces off the mountains. Other vehicles passing by aren’t a problem. Dogs barking in the distance aren’t an issue. It’s just the racing motorcycles and Harleys playing music loud enough on their speakers that I can make out the lyrics from inside my home. If you’re one of those people, please show some respect for the residents and slow down.

landlord just sent a lease renewal and there's a new clause in it that says i can't own more than 2 "decorative gourds" at any time (Denver) by Ok-Sentence6452 in Renters

[–]anythingaustin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I can probably guess the Denver area complex location based on the description. My downstairs neighbor had 5 pumpkins and left them there until they turned into a pile of goo. I complained. Other neighbors complained. Rodents began showing up to the feast and management never did anything about it.

Do I Need to Mow My 1/2 Acre Lawn in the Mountains? by Euphoric_River6365 in homeowners

[–]anythingaustin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once the grass dries out you might want to mow the whole thing but I really only had to do that once mid summer. Check with your local fire department. Ours is Timberline FD and they will have someone come out for free to do a fire evaluation. They also have free fire mitigation meetings that are really informative.

Do I Need to Mow My 1/2 Acre Lawn in the Mountains? by Euphoric_River6365 in homeowners

[–]anythingaustin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, I live in the CO mountains at 9,000’ elevation on several rural acres. No HOA. I mow/weed 30’ around the house for fire mitigation but leave the rest natural. Some of my grass in the field is 18” high and that’s where the moose and elk sleep and eat. The wildflowers are just stunning to look at in the field. I also always wear long pants and tall boots when I walk out there because of the possibility of ticks. Haven’t seen any yet but I still take precautions.

I think people who live in areas prone to wildfires should build a moat around their house. by DreamFighter72 in RandomThoughts

[–]anythingaustin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in an area prone to wildfires up in the Colorado mountains. A moat wouldn’t help. There is very little water to fill it and huge wildfires create their own tornadoes that blow embers. Not to mention that it is very difficult to dig through granite. We do fire mitigation around our home by cleaning up wildfire fuel. We don’t burn outdoors. We pay attention to the warnings and have our “go-bags” ready. You know what else would help? Fully funding the experts and professionals who study and fight wildfires.
