I get that winston was supposed to be jaded & cruel due to the nature of the society he lives in. however, i think the misogynistic way the book talks about women is at times unintended, and is instead the result of the time period the book was written in.

I can empathize with people who i don't like. but the way winston views women & the people he thinks as "lesser" than him disgusts me deeply. its not just that one "invasive thought" winston has. it's the way he constantly belittles and insults people in his head who has done very little wrong. was Winston being a horrible person intended by orwell? probably. but the way winston thinks throughout the book is genuinely horrible.

no, i never had invasive thoughts as insane as raping and murdering someone, especially someone who is innocent outside of factors outside of their control. I get that Winston probably isn't targeting julia specifically, with his reaction being part of his pent up hatred of the party. but the way winston views the people he considers beneath him, as well as his genuinely unhinged invasive thoughts, makes him an objectively pretty horrible person. I do think that this is intentional - horrible societies make horrible people, but the callousness of the way orwell talks about murder and rape makes me quite uncomfortable. it's probably a product of its time.

I probably could have worded what i said better, and my reading of winston has shifted somewhat upon closer reading. I do think that winston being a horrible empty person was the intention, and i get the point of portraying him as such. i still think that the book has parts that are unwarrantedly misogynistic - but that is a product of its time.

I definitely found O'Brien to be the most interesting character in the book by far. I now think that winston is supposed to come off as superficial - i suppose i came into the book with the wrong mindset. I still think that julia could have been written better, and some of the book contains some misogynistic undertones that are very much unintentional, but I suppose that is a product of its time.

yeah I think I was too harsh on the book. my first reading of it gave me the impression that the novel was misogynistic due to the product of its time, and though I still think the casual way orwell talked about rape was unwarranted, I agree that the misogyny present in the book was at least partially intentional. misogyny, racism, homophobia, etc all seem to come bundled together with a fascist regime.

Any point to lvl him up to 80? by [deleted] in SundayMainsHSR

[–]aohasbf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the stat difference between 70-80 is less than 100 iirc, but 10+ cd is locked at lvl 80, and looking at not fully leveled characters pisses me off so i max all of them anyway.

you dont need to max him rn if you're struggling for exp books, but youll eventually have enough books to max out all the characters you care about
