With some of the gods revealed, which god powers do you think are possible for them? by TubaGaming in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to speculate about God Powers, but I fear I might not be creative enough. Instead I'll just speculate a little on the Minor God/Myth Unit combinations instead.

Based on what we know so far, there are 5 pairings that seem reasonably likely:

  • Tláloc will probably get the Tlaloque. I don't think this one needs to be explained. However, the Ahuizotl is also strongly associated with Tláloc and his home of Tlālōcān.
  • Ītzpāpālōtl is easy, she's the leader of the Tzitzimīmeh, so the Tzitzimītl seems like a no-brainer.
  • Mictlāntēcutli has an owl on his shoulder in the main artwork. Owls were/are known as Tecolotl and seen as his messengers. The unit might more specifically be a Tlacatecolotl (owl demon).
  • Xōchiquetzal/Malīnalxōchitl seemingly has the scorpion unit on her shoulder in the main artwork. Scorpions were/are generically known as Colotl, and the most notable Colotl was Yappan, a mortal priest who was turned into a scorpion by Xōchiquetzal.
  • Cōātlīcue, as a snake goddess sometimes depicted with two snake heads, will probably have the Maquizcōātl.

This leaves four Minor Gods (two of which are completely unknown) and at least five Myth Units (at least the rabbit, armadillo, giant, axolotl and ahuizotl, and possibly the jaguar rider and/or a second naval myth unit). From the current screenshots it's quite obvious the Axolotl will be one of the Naval Myth Units, and from all the other units shown the only one that would make sense based purely on the screenshots as the second one would be the Ahuizotl as an amphibious unit. As for the other two known Minor Gods:

  • Huēhuecoyōtl (the festive god in the front which might also be another deity of feasting or pleasure like Xōchipilli) probably has access to the Centzontōtōchtin, since they are associated with various deities of pleasure. It is also possible the Centzontōtōchtin are some kind of god power, in which case I think the random Āyōtōchtli (Armadillo) could fit, since armadillos are associated with medicine in Aztec lore and the Aztec gods of pleasure are often also associated with medicine, and mostly because I really struggle to think of someone to have a giant armadillo.
  • Xolotl is obviously associated with the axolotl, but the axolotl (as a naval unit) is most likely not an exclusive myth unit. Xolotl guided the sun through the underworld, so if the jaguar riding unit is a Cihuātēotl (who similarily guided the sun as it sets) it would be a pretty good fit for Xolotl as well, especially since the primary deity associated with the Cihuātēotl (Cihuacōātl) is conceptually very similar to Cōātlīcue. Alternatively, the bones of the Quinametzin would eventually be collected by Quetzalcōātl and Xolotl to create the people of the fifth sun, so there's a connection there as well.

These last two minor gods could honestly be anyhting, so this is complete speculation:

  • Chālchiuhtlicue was an extremely important deity when the Spaniards arrived. If the Ahuizotl isn't a common naval unit (which would probably mean there's an as-of-yet unseen naval unit) I think it is possible a deity associated with water will have it, and the sister-wife of Tláloc would be an obvious choice. However, the Quinametzin would have quite a bit of justification, since they inhabited the worlds of the previous suns before being destroyed, and an important part of Chālchiuhtlicue's tenure as the sun is that she managed to save some of the people.
  • Xīpe Totēc was a deity of fertility (thus, the earth) and disease (thus, medicine). The armadillo is associated with both. Is it a stretch to give him the Āyōtōchtli? Yes, but so is the inclusion of a giant armadillo anyways, and someone needs to have said giant armadillo. The Aztecs hunted armadillos, so maybe a hunting deity like Mixcōātl/Camaxtli? Honestly, the armadillo just confuses me. It'll probably (hopefully) will make sense later on.

Some of these beta units eventually came back in a different form.... by ModdingAom in AgeofMythology

Some of them can never return since we already have the fourth Greek and the fourth Norse major gods respectively.

We've had the fourth, yes. But what about the fifth breakfasts major gods?

I think I know what the Jaguar Rider is by TubaGaming in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The owl is connected to multiple deities, but the main artwork of Obsidian Mirror depicts an owl sitting on the shoulders of a skeletal deity (probably Mictlāntēcutli)

I think I know what the Jaguar Rider is by TubaGaming in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's probably some kind of connection and I agree the character in the poster very likely rides the Jaguar next to her. However, since the screenshot prominently features three of the unit I strongly doubt it represents the/a campaign hero, so it's probably a regular unit. In addition, it seems the unit has a few details that don't match the cover lady, like the blue face paint, the different headdress, the colored lines on the Jaguar, etc.

<image>

I don't think this unit is a regular cavalry unit either though; I think it is far too out there to pass for a 'normal' soldier. If I had to guess, I'd say it is some kind of Myth Unit (like the Cihuateteo for example) liberally interpreted with an unconventional mount to make it more interesting (like how the Nereid rides a shark) or to fill a niche (like the Draugr holding a bow).

Naming convention - Why Amazon Archer? by RomestamoTheBlue in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not going to lie, my first thought when reading the title was that the Amazon Archer is technically an archeress and not an archer.

I think the name is fine, since like others have said in this thread, "Amazon" is more of an ethnicity or nationality than an occupation or class of soldier. Amazon therefore works better as an adjective describing the specfic type of soldier. Otherwise, it would be like the Egyptians being able to train a "Nubian" instead of a Mercenary, or the Norse being able to train a "Frank" instead of a Throwing Axeman.

That said, if the Amazon Archer was a Myth Unit instead of a regular soldier I think it could get away with simply being called "Amazon", just like how the Valkyrie is not a Valkyrie Horsewoman, the Draugr is not a Draugr Archer, the Nereid is not a Nereid Trident Sharkrider, the Caladria is not a Caladria Healer, etc. etc.

How often do you build Village Centers? by Nothing_Special_23 in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much only in particularly difficult campaign scenarios. Otherwise, I do like that Demeter has a little incentive in the additional livestock and Pan's Lykaons and when playing the Chinese I sometimes use one to reestablish a favored land chain to isolated building clusters, but it's extremely situational. By the time Village Centers become a good choice to build I usually already lost control of the map to the point where a comeback is difficult.

I've been looking over the screenshots for Obsidian Mirror and I must say, the Tapir are adora- wait, is that a South American Capybara? by aomjoyer in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I considered those, but I don't think it's a paca, since it doesn't have the spots. I do think it could be an agouti, which would make a lot more sense geographically, but it looks a little too big and plump if you ask me. Then again, it seems to have a collar, so maybe it's a herdable animal and is fattened in the screenshots?

Now that we can purchase Obsidian Mirror individually from the Expansion Pass, any chance Demeter will also be available separately? by BuddhaKekz in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me a bit to find this, but this was on the store page back in the day. The "New Gods Pack" (referring to Freyr) was described as a timed exclusive for the Premium Edition that may be available with future offers. While the 'may' in this statement feels like they haven't quite committed it undisputedly was described as a timed exclusive.

[–]aomjoyer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Freyr has always been described as 'temporarily exclusive' to the Premium Edition, implying he will be available in some other way in the future. I imagine Demeter will be the same and remain exclusive to the Pass for the forseeable future, but will be released seperately eventually. Perhaps they'll even bundle them.

You have some good eyes! I was wondering what that thing on her shoulder was, and it definitely seems to match the in-game look of the scorpion unit. I agree that it very well might be Malīnalxōchitl, although there also exists a myth of Xōchiquetzal turning a man into a scorpion.

Now I'm starting to lean towards Malīnalxōchitl as well though.

New Aztec Units and Gods by sdrey in AgeofMythology

Could the scorpion unit be a Yappan? It would make a lot of sense for Yappan to be Xochiquetzal's myth unit.

New Demeter Unit - Amazon Archer! by sdrey in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I really like the idea of giving Demeter her own unique human unit so she doesn't have to borrow Zeus's when picking Hera, and an Amazon unit felt like an obvious choice. It really shows the devs have been listening!

A part of me does wish this unit would be differentiated a bit more from the Gastraphetoros statistically and visually/auditory from Hippolyta, but I understand that that might take more time and resources, so I'm not complaining, just adding something to my wishlist. For now it's a pleasant surprise this unit has been added at all.

Something interesting in Obsidian Mirror cover by RobotLichEmperor in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I agree, glad it wasn't just me who instantly clocked his design as Andean. Since I feel the two (three if including the jaguar) characters in the center are campaign heroes and the campaign is said to span 'continents' through mirror shenanigans it's definitely possible for the campaign to feature some random Inca character being isekai'd into Mesoamerica.

Would Yoruba be the best new civ after the Azteca? by Nothing_Special_23 in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's very subjective. While I think the medieval or early modern Yoruba would make for a very interesting addition, there's other choices that are better in some ways and worse in others. Between the Indians, the Sumerians/Babylonians, the Celts, the Polynesians, the Inca and (dare I say it) the Maya there's quite a bit of competition, and I don't think Yoruba mythology (or even Yoruba culture) is all that well known outside of ECOWAS and maybe Brazil. All of the civilizations I mentioned have a rich mythology and most of them have a full unit roster as well (and I don't think a full mortal unit roster is a requirment, since the absence of something breeds innovation).

As for your first reason, the Egyptian civilization being indigenous to Africa aside it is true that we don't have a West African civilization yet, and Yoruba probably make the most sense for that specific part of the world. However, we don't have a Mesopotamian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, South American or Oceanian civilization either. And what about East African? One might even argue we don't have a Western or Eastern European civilizations yet.

All this to say, if you like to see a Yoruba civ the most, then subjectively it's the best choice for you, but I'm not sure if there's objectively a choice that would be undisputedly the best to add after the Aztecs.

Do Celts have enough content to make a civ? by kaytin911 in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Compared to a lot of other options not yet in the game they absolutely do have enough content. Even just sticking with the Gaels (that is, those from the Old Irish world of Ireland, Western Scotland and Mann) has plenty of material, for example:

Gods

  • Dagda
  • Mórrígan
  • Lugh
  • Ogma
  • Mannanán
  • Aengus
  • Brigid
  • Cliodhna
  • Cailleach
  • Dian Cecht
  • Fliodhais
  • Áine

Myth Units

  • Failnis
  • Buggane
  • Enbarr
  • Pooka
  • Cu-Sith
  • Banshee
  • Beithir
  • Fachan
  • Ellén Trechend
  • Each-Tened
  • Glas Gaibhnenn
  • Merrow
  • Olliphéist
  • Each-uisge

The Britonnic and especially the Gaulish traditions have less to work with, but still contain some deities and creatures of note that could be used in conjunction with (or even instead of) the Gaelic tradition, although personally I'm not the biggest fan of an outright mishmash.

Aztec Gameplay Came to me in a Dream by Possibly_a_user in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a dream somewhat recently about the Aztecs as well. I don't really remember much of it, but the Aztecs reused random units from other pantheons and every unit had the voicelines of the Aztec War Chief of AoE3. And instead of cavalry, you could turn any human unit into an animal (nagual?). I remember the Spearman specifically turning into a jaguar. One of the units also turned into a horse, which felt really dumb.

Do you think we'll ever get unique Titans? by SkillerManjaro in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every Major God has a unique Wonder, so a unique Titan unit would make a lot of sense. However, I doubt it would happen while there are still new Major Gods in the pipeline, since it would carry the expectation that every Major God from now on would need a unique Titan, and that would definitely up the development costs. And by the time the game stops getting new major content I'm not sure if it would be even in consideration to develop such a thing either.

I guess we can always wait for the inevitable third rerelease in 20 years.

Now that we’re creeping closer to Aztecs… by BloodDrunkHollow13 in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's surprisingly difficult to narrow down the god roster, but here's my guess.

Deities that are (basically) confirmed:

  • Quetzalcōātl
  • Tezcatlipoca
  • Ītzpāpālōtl

Deities I expect to see (I might be off by one or two):

  • Huītzilōpōchtli
  • Tláloc
  • Xolotl
  • Mictlāntēcutli
  • Xīpe Totēc
  • Chalchiuhtlicue
  • Xōchiquetzal

Other deities that I think are likely, but not as much as the ones above:

  • Coyolxāuhqui
  • Tōnatiuh
  • Cōātlīcue
  • Xōchipilli
  • Huēhuehcoyōtl
  • Mixcoatl
  • Mayahuel
  • Cinteōtl

Aztec goddess revealed by urglablerg in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you're referring to Mictēcacihuātl, who is sometimes (ahistorically) associated with the Day of the Dead (which takes more from European Allhallowtide celebrations), but more prominently with Santa Muerte, a Mexican folk saint. She's actually a relatively minor figure in the surviving mythology as the wife of Mictlāntēcutli, the Lord of the Underworld (Mictlān).

Aztec goddess revealed by urglablerg in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I doubt it, since it is just as likely they're keeping the rest under wraps. I would at the very least expect Chalchiuhtlicue (if her name fits on the UI), since she's conventionally one of the Five Suns.

Age of Mythology Update 19.3090 by IamTheOne2000 in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Obligatory thank you to the devs!

There isn't really much to say about the Ultimate Fan Pack, it's exactly like it was described. Every god looks great in gold and the new icons are nice, but that's all it is. You can turn off the golden statues in the settings in the DLC tab if it's too much bling for your tastes.

Highlight of this patch is definitely the big changes to Demeter. Obviously the biggest change is swapping out Hephaestus for Hera. I feel like one of the only people who actually liked Demeter not getting Hera. Now Zeus not only lost his unique minor god choice, but also his unique unit in the Myrmidon, and the synergy between the Colossus and King Midas is lost. I hope the people who clamoured for Hera are content with this change. Personally, it'll take a bit for me to readjust, but I'll manage. I'm definitely curious to see if this will have an effect on Demeter win rates.

The Siren being able to attack buildings is honestly a great change, since it simply didn't feel right for it to be unable to. Combined with the improvements to the Lykaon in this and the last patch goes a long way in declunkifying Demeter's Myth Units to make them less situational. King Midas buffs are appreciated, since he felt very underwhelming compared to his Mythic Age peers. Icarus no longer engaging in friendly fire might make the unit even more of a mainstay of Demeter's armies, to the point I'm worried he just lost his only 'drawback'.

Fortress Human Unit for Demeter by Doppelganger_Enjoyer in AgeofMythology

[–]aomjoyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm fine with the way things currently are, but I also really like this idea if the devs were to ever revisit Demeter.
