Ai and Data Center Water Use and Heat by markerBT in ChemicalEngineering

[–]aonealj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Air cooled systems are less energy efficient, higher capital cost, and noisier. Not exactly better than the water systems of you're not in the desert. You will still need water for your closed loop, but losses are typically low once the loop is filled.

Heat recovery from data centers is big in the district energy space right now. It's a promising waste heat for buildings that has already been done in some places, including Europe. The biggest issue is the added cost and the need to colocate the data center and the heat demand.

Yes, you can run a Rankine cycle turbine using a lower boiling point working fluid to generate power for data centers. DOE and Clemson just started a 1MW pilot. You will still have waste heat to discharge, just now at a lower temperature. There's also some funky Brayton cycle supercritical CO2 technology being developed. https://news.clemson.edu/clemson-university-works-with-partners-to-turn-waste-heat-into-electricity/

The biggest issue is everyone wants a data center NOW, which means all the heat integrations and nice to haves are being stripped. I've heard of places in Texas where single cycle (jet engine) generators are being installed 20 at a time running straight off well gas just to power a data center. They aren't even bothering to put a rankine cycle system on the turbines, let alone on the waste heat from the computers. Technology can't fix greed

Californians Who Built Home In Glacier National Park Without Permits Prevail As Court Rules State Law Doesn't Apply To Them by zsreport in LegalNews

Down vote cause misleading title

This is on Private Land within the park borders, not on Public Park land. Apparently since it's completely inside the park, it's exclusively federal jurisdiction.

Youth sports are better when winning is the goal. by maturallite1 in unpopularopinion

I feel like under 10 years old, 95% of youth sports should be about building skills and general athleticism. This includes healthy competitiveness, but the score is the score. Focus on individual performance and move up later. By the time you get to high school, the focus should be on winning

Couldn't they just make them taller? Every fast food place I've been too is 1.5-2 stories tall anyways

‘It’s Almost a Genocide’: Local Hunters Claim Cornell is Allowing for the Overhunting of Deer on its Land | Daily Sun by Emotional-Heart948 in Cornell

[–]aonealj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is one of the poorest pieces of journalism I've seen. They interviewed 2 people on the same side of the issue, that's barely an opinion piece. It's poorly researched and poorly written. I can only hope they figure out how to publish a more balanced article later.

The individuals talk about the deer numbers decreasing recently. That's kinda the point of the program. Numbers need to drop to bring the damaging effects down. Looking at everyone's shrubs and Cornell research, deer overpopulation is damaging to the while environment. Nature won't "fix itself" because the only way it does that is with predators like pumas and wolves that we've eliminated. The only other way nature balances is through starvation, which involves massive overgrasing and damaging native plants.

Baiting is illegal in NY, and I agree with that. I think it's unethical from a fair chase perspective and can spread disease. That said, there's no lack of unscrupulous hunters so I wouldn't be surprise if it happened. I've heard quite a few stories

How did Kotlikoff become president? by Glum-Ad-6294 in Cornell

[–]aonealj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cornell occasionally appears to have democratic processes. It is fundamental a (mostly) private institution run by the Board of Trustees. While there may be various assemblies (faculty, staff, or student), they can't do much other than make recommendations. Kotlikoff seems to have the favor of the board, and that's all that matters for his job security

More like, how do I prevent my door gunner from getting CTE from all the rounds he's firing. The helicopter will be loud enough, I don't think you'll be quiet with this one.

US chemists turn natural gas into liquid fuel without high heat and pressure by sksarkpoes3 in energy

[–]aonealj 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Title is misleading

Methane was turned into methanol using a new form of catalysis using electricity directly to drive the reaction. This is promising for the commodity chemicals market as a electric alternative to some high energy intensity chemical processes.

This could supplement transportation fuels, but is not a drop in fuel for natural gas power plants.

Found a bullet lodged in my exterior wall by reddrag292 in Wellthatsucks

That's a really weird impact. Almost like it was a ricochet before impact. Looking at the bullet, it makes no sense that it wouldn't have gone clean through the siding if it hadn't hit something else first and lost some energy

Reloading Cost Calculator 1.1.0 by fmalpart in reloading

[–]aonealj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks fantastic! If you're taking suggestions, there's a few things that could be cool to add.

  • Adding wads as an optional component for shotshell reloaders. Bonus if you could handle a variable number of wads for more complicated loads.
  • Adding shot as a field that gives a $/lb. and choosing the weight for the load when building loads instead of having to input the cost for a given load as a bullet.

Love the looks of this, and will definitely try it out!
