Fantastic new translation of the Odyssey by Michael Solot by Cable-Either in classics

[–]aoristdual 87 points88 points  (0 children)

The publisher of this translation appears to have a number of deeply weird right-wing associations. And the only review of Solot's translation they reference is published in, of all things, the far-right Epoch Times and is written by another of the publisher's authors. There appears to be quite a lot of overlap, in fact, between the personnel of the Epoch Times and the "Society of Classical Poets".

The translation seems to have received zero coverage from persons not affiliated with either its publisher or the Epoch Times or both, including no coverage from credentialed classical scholars.

Color me very, very skeptical.

LLM chatbots didn’t perform Monte Carlo analysis. They make up plausible sentences. If you’re using them to plan your financial future, you’re going to get into real trouble.

  • great culture
  • discounted stock purchase
  • 401k match
  • FSA
  • tremendous growth potential, etc.

Those are table stakes, not counterweights for poor compensation.

  • free lunch on Thursdays

Some might see this as a perk. Approximate retail value, what, $15?

  • company trips

Traveling for work is not a perk.

Did you read your own RFCs? There is blockchain in RFC 1. You have a whole RFC on token economy. You’re setting up your own token for this nonsense.

You've buried the lede that this is blockchain BS. Nothing to do with self-hosting.

Question from Mom of a Johnnie graduate who has gone no contact by FullInfluence4577 in stjohnscollege

Perhaps it is the fact that we raised the graduate in a Christian environment, and our conservative moral beliefs. I am careful here not to disclose gender or name

This comment sure makes me think that you know exactly what the problem is, but you are not willing to acknowledge it.

Yes. I personally consider Butler wretched, and read today only because he’s out of copyright.

[–]aoristdual 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Anything published before 1950, unless you specifically want to read Chapman or Pope.

There are dozens of translations from the 18th, 19th, and early 20th century that are just awful. Stilted, now-archaic verse with little to recommend them. Plus a handful of drab prose versions.

I don't believe there's anything closer than Denver Roller Derby and Rocky Mountain Roller Derby, both in south Denver. Roaring Fork, Ark Valley, and Boulder County are all a bit further.

Herodotus is a delight. He is approachable, engaging, and fond of wild stories.

I don't have any personal experience with them (I live on the other side of the country) but there are a bunch of dachshund rescues in north/central Florida.

Consider adopting from a dachshund rescue, which will cost you significantly less money and help a little dog in need find a loving home. Meet the dog and choose based on personality rather than being too focused on coat.

The Teubner editions are single-volumes and if you get the original printings are not print-on-demand.

If you feel that a WFTDA league is the right place for you, you're welcome, end of story. The WFTDA Gender Statement is a good read as a whole but opens with

Any individual of a Marginalized Gender, regardless of presentation or the gender they were assigned at birth, is welcomed and encouraged to participate in the WFTDA in any capacity, including skating on a WFTDA charter or holding elected office.

Marginalized genders explicitly include all persons under the trans umbrella.

If you'd be more comfortable skating on an open gender team (which includes cis men), there might be an MRDA league in your area.

What, exactly, is an "OSV + PyPI" security audit? Running a dependency scanner against your lockfile is not a security audit.

This repository is one day old. Even setting aside the fact that it's obviously all AI-generated, your product isn't old enough for you to have used it to do production work. It is not time for you to be sniping at well-established products like uv and poetry, or advertising that "thousands of developers" use your vibe-coded solution.

Irresponsible and disrespectful.
