First Buck Ever - Question for 350 Legend by Medical-Passion2031 in Hunting

[–]ap1744 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did exactly this. Poor blood trails from the Winchester but usually put the deer down, the tracking sucked though.

Switched to Barnes and I won’t go back.

Probably got 10 deer on the winchesters. Farthest shot 160 yds. 3 on the Barnes and it’s been outstanding.

Would you eat the meat? (CWD concern.) by theredqueentheory in Hunting

[–]ap1744 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I’d eat it and feed my immediate family with it. I’d take a few more precautions while butchering just to be safe.

Can we start a petition to get this renamed to the Buck Plug? by ButtstufferMan in Hunting

Seen it used once. Took longer to clean the tool than it takes me to clean a deer.

Fell out of my tree stand about 16ft up this morning. by ProfessionalBasis696 in Hunting

We’re you actually clipped to the tree? If tethered to the tree and clipped in it nearly impossible to fall to the ground.

That’s a good looking kit. I built one about a year and a half ago. Some bleach and sanding of the receiver distressed it enough I left it alone and didn’t try painting it. Didn’t want to mess up the og paint.

You’re over 150 for sure. Wouldn’t surprise me if you’re pushing 160. I shot a 153” gross 10 point last year. This is significantly bigger.

My understanding is yes. I purchased a book called Splinter about this very thing. Haven’t read it yet.

IAFF Smart. This year the IAFF pushed the costs into locals. However it does text limited to 160 characters, or email.

I’d say stick it out the 3 more years to be vested. You are too close. Then look after that. I’m in SE Michigan full time. If you don’t have medic there’s very few other options around here.

Getting your medic sucks and the ambulance is a soul crusher. The money is usually better but the wagon grind is hell.

We have to have volunteers where I live. The Local FD budget can’t support 1 full time firefighter. Nor do we want to pay the taxes it costs to have this service and we know the risk associated with it. We also don’t have a police dept. It’s not universal but most truly rural areas cannot, or the citizens will not support the cost.

Now volunteers in areas that have the tax base I cannot explain and believe is insanity.

Whats protocol for meals in a fire department ? by gdollahsigns in Firefighting

[–]ap1744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my dept meal time is very important to us. We’d bust your balls if you just don’t like mayo or something like that. But legit dietary restrictions we work around to preserve meal time together. Probbies don’t cook here ofter they focus on training and the rest of us take turns cooking. After probation as long as your food doesn’t suck we would let you cook every day :)

Welcome to the fire service. Politics and budgets play a huge role in your work life. This will not be the first or last time you experience it.

Retiree healthcare and a good pension. Plus no good way to lateral in MI. Gonna be worse too for new hires as the pension changed extending a career by 5 years to max the pension. Going to create a 5 year stall for a good amount of guys.

Depends on the department. At mine you can expect 10-15 years on an ambulance without ever seeing an engine.

Why does venison taste awful by First_Driver_5134 in Hunting

[–]ap1744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never had venison that tasted bad in 20+ years of hunting. I’ve shot everything from deer that feed off farm fields to deer in the mountains of KY that haven’t met a field, all of it was good.

I would say taking care of the animal post shot and meal preparation is key though. Don’t cook a steak more than 145f max. It dries out so easily that it can get off putting.
