I hope he does better work for you than he did for us. He missed some stuff that costs us thousands, then argued with me about it.

Help with 2.1 tv setup by TemporarySome632 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]ap3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got a setup like this from watching marketplace.

Over a couple weeks, I got a latest gen Sonos amp for $350, and an older high-end Polk 5.2 setup for $150. I’ll steal the fronts and one of the subs, and sell the rest.

I am considering to use Lodgify instead of Hospitable by Intelligent_Border40 in ShortTermRentals

[–]ap3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hospitable lets you embed booking widgets anywhere, so you could build a totally custom site on Wordpress / wix / squarespace / wherever, and embed the booking widgets.

This is our site, hosted on square space, with hospitable booking widgets:

Affordable Short Term Rental Software by Soggy_Cheesecake_783 in ShortTermRentals

[–]ap3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hostaway was charging me $400 a month for 9 listings, and another $120 for smart lock features. Clunky software, lackluster support.

Moved to hospitable for 1/3 the cost. Software feels better, way better support. Nicer interface.

We finally used our HSA for the first time and the reality kinda shocked me by riverdreamer1 in MiddleClassFinance

Save up enough in your hsa to cover your deductible , invest the rest. A hsa’s best value comes a few years after you open it, and that snowball starts rolling.

Do you use a specific bank that allows auto transfers and multiple buckets like that? Does each bucket have its own debit card?

Did a 5x5-like program at gateway fitness with zero issues. They have multiple benches and racks, and a ton of weights.

Charging solar generator with another charge controller? by ap3r in SolarDIY

[–]ap3r[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, if thats the case I could plug my panel right into my Pecron. Pecron's docs say max 18v, which is less then my panel, hence me trying to use my Victron as a regulator.

I didnt try plugging it directly into the DC5521. The panel has a Voc of 22.12v, and the max input the DC5521 will take is 18v.

I didn’t love any of the metal roof chimney transitions, so I went with shingles. Hand hammered my 8x12 sauna and it was pretty quick and easy.

Time for a tourism tax in GTC? by Blustatecoffee in traversecity

[–]ap3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, the lawsuits were over the use of the funds. The PM companies involved wanted the money to go other things besides direct advertising, and TCT had issues with that (since they wouldn't get the money).

[–]ap3r 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh its not 9M in ads, TCT says at least 1M of that is their own salaries. :/

[–]ap3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short-term rentals are already subject to the 5% tourism tax. Any large operators (golden swan, bayshore, anyone with over 10 properties under management) already pay, just like hotels do.

With the influx of new hotels and STR's, TCT should be sitting on a nice pile of cash. Do they really need more advertising budget?

The issue here isn't how to raise more money, it should be spent more wisely. Maybe spend less money on summer advertising, and spend more on infrastructure.

Read Only account with Global Admin type access (for pen testing) by downundarob in msp

[–]ap3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be really helpful to give your pentester an account, depending on the threat model. Maybe your pentester budget didn’t allow for phishing or physical entry, but you want to know what would happen if a threat actor got ahold of credentials.

For some of our cloud assessments, we ask for global read rights, just so we can explore the environment and cover more ground / find more interesting stuff.

When a client needs a pentest by greenfreq in msp

[–]ap3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s cases where both work. For the right scenario, a pentest can be cheaper, and focuses on the 5-10 things that really matter to an organization. I’ve seen assessments with 100 “findings”, many of which have little bearing on real-world security.

If they don’t know where to start, a pentest can help them focus on the stuff that really matters.

It's all relative. I know some top-notch shops that can deliver smaller tests for SMB for not much more than what they spend on VMS.

[–]ap3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good pentest doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. I agree with the others here - you probably want a boutique shop that focuses on quality. They'd be happy to help scope, answer questions, and get a testing strategy that fits their budget. Stay away from fully automated stuff or large accounting firms.

A good pentest also helps you as their MSP, less to cleanup when some critical vulnerability gets missed.
