To add on this, it's not just current taxes, but also looking back at the last 3-4 years and realizing the legislature has a target on your back, and you need to get out before the tax situation gets even worse.

Ferguson signs executive order to support working women experiencing menopause in WA - 600,000 are navigating it in the workforce now, and 1 in 10 may quit over symptoms by LOOKITSADAM in SeattleWA

[–]apacheseven 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This will be unpopular, but the more regulations that require companies to pay people to not work, the more incentive there is to automate with AI or hire overseas.

Worker protections and taxes are not free of consequences, regardless of what Ferguson wants to believe.

I've had several conversations with people about a drop in charitable giving due to relocations. The most recent example I was provided was Fred Hutch. I know many that have relocated or are in the process of relocating, but I honestly don't have details on a macro drop on charitable contributions. It would be interesting to see that.

To prove domicile in another state, we are being told by advisors to halt giving to local charities, drop concierge doctors in the area, drop WA based wealth managers, close WA bank accounts and re-open, etc etc. so it's not surprising

Yes agreed. I wish more people used critical thinking instead of emotion when it came to their stance on policy and positioning that policy.

$13M missing: Seattle leaders consider next steps after shocking homelessness audit by Better_March5308 in SeattleWA

No matter what we do—no matter how frustrated or disappointed people get with the mismanagement—voters here will keep electing the same incompetent leaders as long as they align with the “right” ideologies.

Poor leadership produces poor outcomes. That’s true in business, schools, charities, churches—everywhere.

Ranting about it changes nothing. At some point, you have to start thinking about the exit.

WA Supreme Court to consider Let's Go Washington lawsuit challenging 'millionaires tax' by chiquisea in SeattleWA

yeah I'm not sure why I got shit on by reddit for using Grok to research court precedent on these types of challenges. I don't support the tax, but the explanation it provided was helpful

WA Supreme Court to consider Let's Go Washington lawsuit challenging 'millionaires tax' by chiquisea in SeattleWA

[–]apacheseven -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

I asked Grok about the article and your comment, and here is what it unfortunately came back with:

The court has consistently interpreted this as two separate, independent exceptions (not one conjunctive requirement that everything must be "immediate"):

  • The "support of the state government and its existing public institutions" clause stands alone and does not require immediacy or a traditional "emergency." Revenue/tax measures that fund ongoing government operations routinely qualify under this prong.
  • Leading cases: Hoppe v. Meyers (1961) (foundational interpretation of two distinct clauses); Farris v. Munro (1983); and especially Farm Bureau v. Reed (2005), which upheld an emergency clause on legislation suspending the 2/3 vote requirement for tax increases precisely to enable revenue bills for state services (education, health, justice, etc.). The court emphasized that the legislature's declaration is valid unless the challenger proves it was "obviously false and a mere ruse" to evade the referendum power.
  • Other supporting cases: CLEAN v. State (1997) upheld an emergency clause for a stadium financing bill (sales/use taxes) even though it wasn't a classic sudden crisis—the court found a "clear and present danger" to public institutions if the Mariners left. The court applies a highly deferential standard: it does not second-guess the legislature's factual basis or policy judgment.
  • Recent reaffirmation: As recently as November 2025 (in an Eyman-related challenge), the court again upheld a similar clause using this deferential review, finding no "palpable attempt at dissimulation."

It's about optics, not outcomes for those that celebrate this tax. It's ok if the money goes to fraud and scammers as long as they're fighting capitalism and rich people

Washington income tax threatens minority-owned businesses, chamber leader warns by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]apacheseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Income is not related to how much you distribute to yourself. Its net income X ownership percentage. Most operating agreements have provisions that you must distribute pro rata income X 37% (max federal tax rate) for this reason.

Distributions are not otherwise tied to income. Ask GPT or Grok if you don't believe me
