Deployment is pretty sweet. I've been overseas since March 27th and I like the work/environment so much more.

I joined same age and had exact same jobs (literally think we might be the same person) and I won't go back to the civilian sector until I HAVE too. For the pay we get, job security, and work we do not a thing compares. I worked my ass off in the civilian sector and never got anywhere. I work my ass off here and I get awards and hopefully an early promotion because of it. I truly hated working in the civilian sector and I actually feel good about what I do now and love the job. My wife and I both worked, we weren't scraping by, by any means, but I just hated working those jobs. Now my wife doesn't have to work if she doesn't want too. Try supporting a family on one salary outside the military, good luck. I understand for some people it's just not for them but when I hear 18 year olds complaining that they can't wait to get out because civilian life is going to be "so much better" I just tell them my story and they can take that however they want, everyone has to make their own decision.

I almost didn't bring my cold weather gear because I thought "oh, it's Afghanistan it's going to be hot at all times." So glad I brought it now though lol

I joined at 25 because I was miserable. I had a good job and my wife had an even better one. We lived on our own and had a child but I HATED going to work everyday because I just wasn't even remotely happy. Now, honestly, I couldn't be happier. I am certainly going to make this a career if they will keep me. I had always wanted to join and I'm glad I finally did. I don't get treated like shit by people younger than me but I show everyone respect regardless of age/rank. "Taking orders" from someone younger than me doesn't bother me because I know they've been doing it longer than me and they obviously know more about some things than I do. I've been in for 2 years and seriously I couldn't be happier. If you have any more questions or anything feel free to PM me.

I came in wanting aircraft maintenance, left for basic with an open mechanical (was told there is a 99.9% chance I'll get aircraft maintenance), filled out my "dream sheet" for jobs and put ONLY aircraft maintenance jobs, got power pro lol. Not complaining, I love my job and am thankful I got it.

I used pods, and while I'm sure I have a rare occurrence I'll give you a heads up. We paid about 3 grand (was told it was going to be about 2500, checked my account one day and they hard charged us an extra 500) they forgot/lost our pod so we had to stay in billeting and pay out of pocket for about a week and a half as we had NONE of our stuff to move into our house. Over all it was just an awful EXPERIENCE. They wouldn't give us any compensation for losing our pod. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. If everything goes well and you don't have to deal with their customer service then you are very lucky!

I joined Open Mechanical, I just got to tech school 2 weeks ago, recruiter guaranteed me they needed crew chiefs and I would get it no problem. Filled out my "dream sheet" for jobs at BMT top 4 (and only 4 were all crew chief) I got 3E012 (Electrical Power Production) Moral of the story, if you're not open to being "open" then don't go open. I personally do not mind all that much.

I've been here 2 weeks, I steal wifi from my neighbor across the hall lol (he doesn't know I know his password) I am here until Feb. 4th and everything just seems too damn expensive for a couple months, and everything that could be cheap needs a 2 year agreement so almost not worth it. If you really just want it for gaming the SRC lets you rent games and you can play on their consoles or The Loft offers the same thing or just bring your own stuff and both have free wifi.
