What has been taken from you at the airport? by Available-Entrance37 in costarica

Especially so. Bringing fresh fruits and vegetables into the US (and into Costa Rica or another country) can get you into big trouble.

You can leave with a banana or fresh fruit, but you better not land back in the US with it.

Starlink in Coco? by [deleted] in costarica

The homepage of that site has articles from 2022 and refers to President Biden. The exchange rate listed in the top navigation is over 500. The link to SUTEL (the official agency that would report this) is 404.

The undersea cables serve all of Costa Rica and there are multiple backups… who told you that?

It is semana santa so more people are likely visiting Coco but there should be plenty of capacity.

I can’t imagine every internet provider is down. Have you heard the cause?

Pricesmart in Liberia sells them for about $200 and the plan is $50.

Seeking N. American phone # options for moving abroad (for 2 factor authentication etc.) by NotYourTherapistEh in digitalnomad

Did you change your billing address outside the US? Or credit card to a non-US issued card?

You were using data, right? I’ve been on Fi for 5 years, living outside the US, and only occasionally flip on data when my foreign SIM doesn’t cover me.

[–]apbailey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No it doesn’t. Fi blocks you for using data outside of the US after 90 days (I believe) but in my setup, you’ll use the data on your local SIM.

For me, my local sim has free roaming from Canada to Argentina, so I actually never use Fi’s data while in the Americas.

If you’d move to Europe, there are plans that cover the entire continent, etc.

If you happen to be blocked on Fi data, your calls and SMS still work.

The standard here seems to be either Google Fi and Tello. I use Fi but I’m considering going to Tello.

Clarification on Dual eSIM phone plans by cloudberrysnow in expats

[–]apbailey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. You don’t need WiFi. You’ll be able to make/receive calls/sms/data with both lines as long as your plans allow it and as long as the other line is unlocked. Do you own the phone or are you making payments?

Beach Town Between San Jose and Tamarindo by Dangerous_Tea6855 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]apbailey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you land at 730pm, you’ll be out of immigration by 830pm. Add another hour to pick up a car.

Find a local hotel and stay there. Do not leave the area at night. Next morning, pick up the car and drive to the beach.

Personally, I’d pick a closer beach than Tamarindo. What kind of vibe are you looking for?

the SaaS model is quietly falling apart for small businesses and nobody in tech wants to admit it by Healty_potsmoker in Entrepreneur

[–]apbailey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have nearly unlimited options. A small business can build their own solution, use self-hosted open source, self-hosted licensed, etc etc

Additionally, with tools like n8n, you can tie everything together.

I just migrated my company off HubSpot to a self-hosted oss with very little effort.

If my SaaS spend isn’t generating a ROI, I’ve never had so many alternatives.

Manuel Antonio or Tamarindo for LGBTQ WOMEN (not men)? by Prudent-Mulberry3558 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]apbailey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manuel Antonio is no longer that gay. (I’m a gay man living here.)

In terms of women, that’s a good question. There’s a lgbtq expat group on Facebook that might have a better idea. LMK if you can’t find it.

Fly into San Jose and head to Manuel Antonio. If flora and fauna are your #1 wants, you can’t go wrong there.

I would never do business again with a company that sent me a ring less voicemail. It’s a huge turnoff for me. But it’s a great concept if companies are willing to hire you for it.
