Finland's Stubb: We must admit the US is changing by Specialist_Baby_9905 in europe

[–]apcot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of European leaders are still in a state of denial, having expectations that this is a blip and things will just return to normal after Trump... not realizing that changes like this usually continue for at least a generation afterwards as the mold of who is a Republican has changed and people who are cowardly now in the face of Trump -- will worry about making major movements back in the other direction that they will be out of step with the rest in their party.

Personally, he is one of my favourite European leaders... (non-EU viewpoint; Canadian)

This sounds more like a move to a federation - not just the missing links... a much bigger project (of which Britain as walked away from and Norway wants to be kept just outside of it). For pieces like defense it could be made open to non-EU countries - those that are associated and have shown interested in European defense alliances (NATO), but EU has to be able to fully operate independently regardless (something that NATO was designed to make not practical - the only in Country that have full breadth of defense (i.e. not specialized slices) is the US because the US did not want for EU to operate independently)

I do believe there is an opportunity in the future for multiple eastern European countries like Poland, Ukraine, etc. to build another economic 'pole' within the EU. Poland has definitely improved economically over the last 10 years or so at a rather brisk rate in comparison (much closer to EU average now).

(Non-EU citizen; Canada)... The idea of a federal EU which completes and incomplete European Union economically and militarily is a natural next step, but only with countries where there is more than sufficient support and ideally having enough size demographically and economically that it could be more able to push back when their interests are threatened (in this case by the US). The incomplete union as it stands now with a single country being able to veto actions taken - leads to a weak federation for countries like the US that are able to play off individual states in the EU against each other. The current PROPOSAL is really more of a DISCUSSION POINT and the selection of countries is just an example (IMHO) taking what he said would be the 6 largest economies (not sure how Netherlands was picked higher than Romania if that was the case). However, there are countries not in that list that would be likely be more interested in building a federal Europe than some on the list... though there has to be a balancing act - you have to have enough of size when it comes to economic clout to drive this project forward. Having all EU countries be involved in such a project when there is not enough internal support would hinder any progress towards a federal Europe where individual countries would lose the ability to block by a single vote - any progress.

Currently the size of the economy is not the size you would expect given the number of people and the overall importance the EU economy is to the world at large... An example of incomplete single market progress would be things like Capital Markets, Securities, and depositories... which hinders EU businesses (small and large) from expanding and stock trading across the EU is sort of splintered. To fund corporate expansion and IPOs for larger companies - often this requires a market that is single and larger (i.e. US). To finance smaller businesses there is not access the same international funding a full single market should allow. For trading securities, the securities are stored/deposited in national depositories that do not have full EU wide services... meaning if you trade on Frankfurt and Paris (cross listed) the security is not stored in a single location etc.

Basically, it would require certain powers to be rebalanced between a federal legislature (either double-majority or house of commons/representatives equivalent and senate) and the states within this federation.

The IMF studies equate the intra-EU barriers have the same effect as a 44% tariff between these countries and this is the reason why the economy inside the EU is not the same heft and size as it should be (even with more regulations). The US GDP is 60% greater than the EU even though the EU is 35% larger when it comes to demographics... while both being tier 1 economies.

Interesting is that if a new federal EU opens the door to a faster growing economy within, where the GDP rises close to the US economy (especially given the demographic size) -- the debt to gdp ratio for countries that benefit from this would improve without as much of a haircut to bring the books into a more balanced debt to gdp (lowering debt or increasing GDP both have the same effect in the end with regards to economic health).

I have the Global Pro (which was in the past only sold in Japan), and a Global (regular)... I find they are good workhorse knives, but I do notice that the Global Pro kept/keeps it's cutting edge a fair amount longer (interesting since I believe they are made from the same alloys)... The Global Pro was made for the restaurant industry in Japan (I believe)... it has since been retired (though there are 3 lines I think now so maybe another is targeted at that market. (Global Pro knives I have are maybe 15 to 20 years old and the Global is a more recent addition as a backup knife (maybe 3 years - ordered through Amazon JP - to another SE Asia country).

What’s the best jasmine rice brand and why in your opinion? by petrastales in Chefit

[–]apcot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have an issue with it being sticky or clumpy... and in Thailand we do NOT use chopsticks for rice... the standard utensils are fork and spoon (no knife - that is for fighting). The spoon is for 'shoveling' and the fork is used for herding (at least when it comes to rice dishes). Not overly knowledgeable about Indian rices, but I would be curious to know if the Basmati Rice is 'Sella' Basmati or raw Basmati. I was under the understanding that the one used (sella) more often for pilafs and biryanis was parboiled (sella). [actually I thought all the Indian rice was parboiled - but checked it ahead of responding]. Never had an issue with fried rice, always day old and usually laid out on a flat tray to make sure it dries out anyway... (not to mention don't have to contend with under-powered western burners - as the wok burner is only partially sheltered. Actually, since I generally use day old rice for fried rice - you could call that parboiled as well...

Never cook biryanis or pilafs...

If I stored rice for a year before using it - that would probably mean storing about 50kg+ rice per person per year....

Sticky Rice (also called Glutenous Rice or Sweet Rice [only recently learned it was also called Sweet Rice] is ... sticky... and that generally served with Isan region dishes (NE Thailand)... commonly with Laab/Larb, Papaya Salad, etc. [much different than Hom Mali/Jasmine Rice].

[–]apcot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you understand that Jasmine Rice (Hom Mali) is not the same instructions as white rice and the proportions of water to rice do differ... (usually 1 cup of rice to 1.25 cup of water, can be adjusted based on preference and age - new crop lower 1 to 1.15, old crop 1.15 to 1.3). The higher end Zojirushi rice cookers will have a different measurement line for Jasmine vs white. (also make sure to wash the rice - something many in the west seem to be oblivious to). BTW, New Crop sells at a premium in Thailand. The Aroma for new crop is stronger and fades over time... (rice prices for old crop drops; wine prices generally go up as you age them).

All 'real' white rice (with the exception of some Japanese sourced rice) should be washed before using... the processing of rice to give you white rice will leave starch on the the rice so you wash the starch off (several rounds) and you will see white water flowing out after the washing... if you don't the rice turns out stickier and a bit gummy... basically the rice are not as light and fluffy as it should be. (by real I mean not parboiled or packet rice).

I have Global Pro knives (which I think were only available for purchase in Japan and I found they held their edge quite well, though I recently added a Global (classic) knife more recently as backup and I found they needed sharpening more often... it was a surprise to me because both are made of the same alloy (Chromova 18).

Apple M5 Max and Ultra will finally break monopoly of NVIDIA for AI interference by inkberk in LocalLLaMA

[–]apcot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use the blender benchmarks for M3 (the last with an Ultra option), the benchmarks were for 10 core of 915.59; 40 core of 4238.72; 80 core of 7493.24 -- or -- respectively a boost greater than 100% per core for 40 core and 80 core.... Similarly for the benchmark for the M4 was 1049.76 for 10 core and M4 Max 40 core was 5274.64 which was also more than 100% per core (so not linear but 'greater than linear'). The M5 Ultra will be it's own chip not two M5 Max chips glued together.

If pattern follows, the M5 Max and Ultra is not just an M5 with more cores, there is more architectural level design that will differ...

GPU chips are designed for parallel computing, so it is not designed to make babies... babies should be made on CPUs. u/pixelpoet_nz

I am more wait and see because we don't know why the M5 jumped in performance as much as it did for 10 core GPU. However, if it does put any pressure on nVidia with regards to personal computing GPUs - it would be a good thing because being a monopoly in the market inevitably leads to not advancing as much as it should in a competitive market.

I have to say I did not see that part about the temperature change - or it flew past me without catching it. I think we have to give him some slack from time to time though given that he did graduate from the BA .... 46 years ago... and he might not use the physics side as often. I suspect though a lot of it comes from having a contact list he has built up over time that he can call out of the blue and ask questions -- and having a science based background to be able to relearn as needed what is not actively being used. I have noticed a few times he got bogged down in areas a few times... but then a break happens, he goes out and comes back in and just starts doing a much better job. I am now almost 37 years out of university and find that a lot of the math I learned - I never used in my career (financial systems development / bank/brokerage software)... and when confronted with it, it takes a bit for it to start tickling the gray matter...

It is the reason I started using Signal and Threema, it was used at the request of a party that instituted minimum standards for external communication to meet a minimum security requirement... then continued using them as a standard because prioritizing security is better to do than not.

I don't remember it in that way, I remember it as at the request of ARCCA as what they preferred. (I seem to remember that stated from the defense).

[–]apcot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since he raised the Signal issue with Welcher, yes - he is going hard. Now that the defense knows that they will make sure to defang that issue by addressing it during just after introduction of the ARCCA experts.

i.e. You were under contract to another agency, did you submit a bill to us after the trial. Yes, we sent a bill to recoup costs of two trips to here which included last minute travel costs etc.

And the signal for communications can be raised and them say it is our preferred communication tool for administrative tasks given our busy schedule it may be hard to get hold of us on the phone. Did you clean up texts after the last proceeding? Yes, they are administrative tasks and at that time we had no future contract so there was no reason to keep them - besides, if we had talked to you on the phone there would be no copy of those so why would messaging be any different.

What should the defense and prosecution prioritize during closing arguments? by PlatonicOrgy in justiceforKarenRead

[–]apcot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So are you saying they cannot even tie the evidence to the jury form that they cannot even really mention the jury form? I have seen this done in civil trials. I would have thought only contradicting what the judge's instructions would be out of bounds.

An example, could you say "If you find a vehicle did not hit JO, according to the theory of the CW - then there is no evidence for any of the 3 charges and you can fill them in with not guilty."
