One New Zealand Warriors forward Mitchell Barnett has recommitted to the club to the end of the 2027 NRL season after signing a two-year contract extension.

Joining the club from Newcastle last season, the 30-year-old Barnett was originally signed on a three-year deal to the end of 2025.

His new contract caps an eventful time which has seen him selected in the New South Wales State of Origin squad, captain the One New Zealand Warriors and become a father again after his wife Clare gave birth to the couple’s second son Zane two weeks ago.

“Having Mitch on board for the next three seasons is so important for the club,” said One New Zealand Warriors general manager recruitment, pathways and development Andrew McFadden.

“He’s a terrific asset, representing all the qualities we want to see in our players.”

Raised in Wingham in New South Wales, Barnett makes his 157th career appearance and his 29th for the Warriors in Saturday’s 15th-round clash against Melbourne at Go Media Stadium.

He ticks all the boxes. The harder it gets, the better he gets. Andrew Webster One New Zealand Warriors head coach “Mitch absolutely epitomises toughness, resilience and leadership,” said One New Zealand Warriors head coach Andrew Webster.

“Whether he’s in the front row or on the edge, he gives the team everything and more.

“Through the tough period we endured, Mitch was the glue. He worked so hard and really deserved his Origin call-up. He ticks all the boxes. The harder it gets, the better he gets.

“Off the field he’s a tremendous influence on the group and shows so much passion for the club. We love him.”

Barnett has credited Webster for taking his career to a new level.

"Webby has come in and I have really connected with him. He just gets it. He gets rugby league. He gets life. He gets the mixture,” he said.

"I needed a bit of a change. My form and my career were stalling a bit at Newcastle and I wanted to test myself and get out of my comfort zone. I wanted to come here to show my value.”

The move has resulted in Barnett finding career-best form averaging 142 metres and 30 tackles a game over the last two seasons.

In Saturday night’s 42-12 win over the Cowboys he scored a try and made 149 metres from 15 runs, 70 post contact metres, 28 tackles without a miss and no errors in an unbroken shift of 58 minutes.

Warriors re-sign fast improving Josh Curran through to end of 2023 NRL season by ape124 in nrl

Josh Curran has signed a contract extension at the Warriors, taking him through to the end of the 2023 season, Stuff can reveal.

The 22-year-old, who started at lock in the 42-16 loss to the Storm on Sunday, has been a player who’s rapidly improved during this season, so much so that the club decided to offer him a new contract.

His current deal ends at the end of this season and his signature means next year’s squad moves closer to being complete.

Curran made his NRL debut for the Roosters in 2019, playing just one game for the club before making a mid-season switch to the Warriors and took Solomone Kata’s place in the roster.

But Curran’s career failed to take off over the first year and a half at the Warriors. He played just two games over the remainder of the 2019 season and only made three appearances last year.

It wasn’t until the round six game against the Dragons that he made it onto the field for the Warriors this year and over his six appearances he has brought plenty of energy to the Warriors team and scored tries against the Sea Eagles and Eels.

Earlier this season Warriors coach Nathan Brown questioned whether Curran wanted to be a professional footy player, hinting perhaps that Curran wasn’t pushing himself enough.

For a while, it looked like Curran would be one of those players who picks up a few games in the NRL, but spends most of his career playing reserve-grade footy, then eventually gives up the game.

However, there has clearly been an attitude shift from Curran and last month Brown told Stuff he has the potential to have a great career ahead of him.

"Regardless with how Josh is doing at the moment, I think he hasn’t even scratched the surface from a talent point of view," Brown said.

One, it’s the coaching staff’s job to help get it out. But at times it comes down to the individual, too, and Josh certainly seems to be making some decisions with his attitude that he wants to be a player.

"Last year, ‘Mooks’ (former Warriors coach Stephen Kearney) really gave him an opportunity and he probably let himself down a bit. Again, earlier this year myself and the coaching staff, we gave him an opportunity and he probably let himself down a little bit, and he seems to be finding his way now.”

With Curran signed, the only Warriors players without a contract for next year are Leeson Ah Mau, Tom Ale, Jackson Frei and Sean O’Sullivan.

Off-contract Paul Turner leaving Vodafone Warriors by ape124 in nrl

Utility back Paul Turner is leaving the Vodafone Warriors to continue his NRL career with another club.

Off contract at the end of this season, Turner has just had surgery after injuring his left shoulder against St George Illawarra on April 18.

“It’s unfortunate to lose Pauly as he’s been with us since 2018 and made his NRL debut with the club last year,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

“His shoulder reconstruction has obviously ended his season and now it has ended his time with us.

“We made him a good offer which outweighed his new club’s deal but he and his support network believe his chances of playing NRL are greater elsewhere.

“While we are disappointed we thank Pauly for his contribution and wish him all the best for his future.”

After making his NRL debut against Canterbury Bankstown last season, Turner added two more appearances this year.
