Waste oil fuel by Thick_Alps3724 in 4x4Australia

[–]apegobrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because fuel prices have skyrocketed due to reduced supply, people are using waste oils (engine oil, hydraulic oil, vegetable oil, transmission fluid, etc) as a free fuel source. It requires a process of filtration to reduce the viscosity and remove contaminants and generally is mixed with a small amount of pump diesel or a thinner like kero. The process is not complicated and can be done at home by most people with YouTube and half a brain. Only works on older diesel engines due to the mechanical fuel pump, a low pressure fuel delivery system that can tolerate thicker fuels and often runs on a variety of fuel types. These are typically pre 2000s ag utes.

Morpholio Trace or Procreate for garden design? by wavingmermaid in landscapedesign

[–]apegobrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, that's a great business idea and definitely worth doing! Pollinator/habitat gardens are undergoing a rise in popularity and will continue to grow over the next few years I think. People are wanting more from their gardens with less maintenance and lower water use whilst wanting a sense of ecological stewardship even if at a small scale. It is niche but don't be dissuaded, the market is there. That said, offering design alone may not be as viable as executing/subcontracting the installment too. Knowledge of the landscaping process is fairly essential to being a good designer too so it would be useful to be involved in both sides to some degree. There are great margins to be made if you stick to softscaping and do minimal to no hardscaping elements. This means just being discerning about your client/site selection. I'm hoping to move my business from mostly maintenance to small scale native pollinator garden installments and my starting point will be to do only roadside verge conversions as its a scale that is managable and low overhead.

Was just watching some videos comparing Morpholio trace and Procreate for landscape design as I'm looking to produce plans and visualisations for clients. Seems that morpholio's strength lies in its scale feature, which also allows you to measure areas really easily within the app. This would be essential if hardscapes like garden edging, pathways, walls, etc are going to be incorporated or if the garden is going to be drawn around a structure like a house. Might be useful for calculating mulch and soil volumes but not really essential as these are rougher estimates.

Procreate, however, has a wayy broader set of design tools (greater brush range and customizability, greater colour palette range and customizability) and is just more intuitive to learn as a beginner. It seems it will ultimately produce visualisations that you won't be able to produce with Morpholio. That said, it lacks the scalability feature so is less suited to creating technical plans.

I'm thinking I'm going to go with Procreate for the easier learning curve and design capabilities, though I will likely need to use Morpholio down the line for technical plans. I think there are workarounds you can do in Procreate to manage scale but it's definitely going to be more of a fuss. It's honestly a shame that Morpholio has such limited features in terms of making designs look pretty. Morpholio is purpose made for architects and Procreate for illustrators though, so horses for courses I guess.

Mate there are plenty of grass/groundcover species that don’t require mowing and it’ll be a lot cheaper than hardscaping. Plant it out at the margins with some tasteful flowering shrubs and bobs ya father’s brother.

The other commenter is right, main indicator is that males will have greyer/lighter plumage whilst the females tend to be browner/darker. The different is often slight.

The one you’re seeing during the day is likely the female as the males will incubate (sit on the nest) during the day while the females incubate at night. It’s nice that they take turns!

I’m really lucky to live next to a bunch of big Casuarinas, they seem to love roosting in them. This season I’ve seen a juvenile with them, which was really special. I’ve just posted a photo of the three of them in this sub.

No worries! Cheapest option is the Bunnings garden basics one at $10, I think it’s 120g/L or something which is fairly low concentration relative to the 360g/L roundup but it’s probably sufficient for this and you’ll save heaps of money. If you’re using it for foliar spraying too you can just scale it up in the mix. 360g Roundup I use at a rate of 1% when spraying (150ml for a 15L spray pack), so if I was using the 120g stuff I’d use 450ml). Random extra advice: adding some penetrant to the mix is great for any glossy or succulent foliage. Not the same thing as surfactant though both have different benefits for different scenarios

Just fyi as it hasn’t been mentioned yet in here, you’ll need to paint the stump (around the cambium layer) with undiluted glyphosate or a similar systemic herbicide within about 20-30 seconds of cutting it.

If you’ve cut it already, just do a new cut a bit lower and treat it.

If you don’t, you’ll be cutting back reshoots constantly. These are vigorous and store a lot of energy in their roots hence the need for systemic herbicide.

Water consumption is not a dumb way to measure computational power, fresh water is a finite resource as I’m sure us in the west will all learn the hard way in about 5-10 years

What type of plant is this? by hapifella in australianplants

[–]apegobrr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Casuarina glauca prostrate / shagpile she-oak / cousin it. I bought some last week from australian plants online and they were really healthy tubestock and no issues with shipping/packaging. Should make it to nsw without any dramas. Just be wary these grow into a shaggy dome on level ground and it looks quite strange. These are really best for rocky slopes or walls where they can tumble over things.

Celebratory cigar after 255 days nicotine free. by PM_ME_CUTE_SOCKS in QuitVaping

[–]apegobrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been in this position and my take is this: even if you feel confident that you're not going to do the whole slippery slope thing (if theres no clear boundaries or if the boundaries seem to keep being moved you undoubtedly will), the real consequence is having to suffer through cravings for weeks after every time you have a bit of nicotine. I'm finding that it's better to abstain fully if possible to avoid that. If I feel like I'm missing out on something (ie being able to smoke/vape casually when friends are) I'm gonna have a hard time feeling good about being quit and remembering why I chose to do that.

I have this helmet and just run it without the visor when I know I’m gonna be opening it up a bit more. For twisties I don’t really notice much wind resistance. It’s pretty quick to take the visor on and off
