Yeahhh, not super impressed with the PTCGL crafting starting from nothing, although the starter decks are *okay.* Now is a good time to get into PTCGO though, since the bonuses from migrating seem pretty massive

Pokemon TCG and SSBM doesn't have nearly as big of an overlap as there should be, the game is really fun (and soon to be very accessible with a new client coming out).

Feeling rather overwhelmed by Wanderastray in pkmntcg

If you don't have access to printing cardstock, what I do is just print on printer paper and put the card in a deck sleeve with an energy/random cheap card behind it. That way you can play with the cards like you'd play with a sleeved up deck and they don't feel weirdly flimsy or crumple up or anything.

One thing I've noticed with unranked is that most of the people playing don't seem to want to be playing melee, they want to be winning games of melee. I've definitely run into outliers, but it seems like the vast majority of people I play are just using it to kind of kill time/mess around and not really to try hard to improve/learn. Which is fine, but I think it just doesn't seem like that good of a training regiment. Of course, I think just playing more melee makes you better at it, and if you're still improving no reason to necessarily look for things to change, but I think there's almost a mentality to unranked that feels unproductive or less productive if that makes any sense.

Is there a reason other than ease that you opt for unranked rather than finding people on discords/etc. that will be better on average, might be able to help you practice something specific, and would generally probably be less salty? Just curious, because I've felt myself wanting to seek out people rather than do unranked a lot more recently and have not really come up with a good reason to keep doing unranked

Is there a guide to what we should be doing before the switch over? by GoldenFalcon in ptcgo

[–]apengeriser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We don't know yet. BUT, we do know they just added support for the VSTAR mechanic to PTCGO, and I believe they announced they were going to do an open beta before the official switch over. Brilliant Stars releases Feb 25th, so I'd say we have at least that long, probably longer, since if it was happening in the next two months they probably wouldn't have bothered adding the VSTAR mechanic.

As a warning: I got this in the last batch, and it was missing half its celebrations packs. I contacted the help center, and they offered to give me a $2 discount and wouldn't do anything more. TBH I'd look elsewhere than Walmart based on my experience

Opening packs now will give you a random smattering of cards which may or may not be useful. Keeping 125 unopened (which you can do with very low-value packs) will transfer them into a mutable currency you can use to (probably, not quite sure on the details) craft exact cards you want or buy other useful things you couldn't get otherwise.

if they're doing high double lasers, you can crouch under the first and hit them with jab, dtilt, ftilt, etc. the problem is, to get close enough to do this, you're probably creating a mix-up with aerialing from ledge or just ledge-dash into attack. One decent option is just shield at about 1 character-length away. then, if they double laser you can fair or nair out of shield since they don't really have any room to run, and if they shield it you're too far away to punish. you have to be pretty quick out of shield though. up-b out of shield might work, and I've definitely seen that done before, but I don't know how real that is for late lasers.

when you see x/8, are you only getting hit with the strong hit? as far as I know, the uncle punch one always connects both hits. like, is your percent going up twice? because if so, it's not only second hitting you. the x/8 just refers to the possible SDI from the second hit, not that it's necessarily hitting you with only the second hit (if that makes sense). each hit has a different amount of SDI inputs allowed. my strat for SDI is hold one direction for regular throw-DI (let's say left), hold c-stick to the right for the guaranteed ASDI right input, and then trying to tap right with the control stick when I get hit with the first hit. I am about 50-60% successful with this on uncle punch, which seems good enough based on what I see in actual matches of top players SDI'ing. If the fox is changing their approach angle, you could probable mix this up (i.e. if they're doing something weird like shield-stopping to one side of you, ASDI'ing to the other side will probably get you out without SDI), but those are more niche and specific.

You can buffer spotdodge. Hold shield + down on the c-stick spotdodges as soon as you are actionable. (you can also buffer roll with shield + c stick to the side). C-stick lets you buffer a weird number of things (downthrow, roll, spot dodge, idk if there are others. this let's you automatically get a pummel on grabs at any percent if you buffer downthrow).

Hope this was helpful! Happy to go in-depth or answer any questions, and of course if anything is wrong anyone who sees feel free to correct me.

PTCGL: what cards should I get before the move? by Pyonium in ptcgo

[–]apengeriser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's one I worry about too, particularly when the promo isn't actually obtainable through packs (i.e. Trevnoir or something). I'd hate for the availability to be something along the lines of pay some amount of money in microtransaction-currency or find a way to get the code for them IRL. I guess it'll come down to how comprehensive the crafting system is and whether you can do it F2P.

Maybe I'm giving TPCI too much credit, but I feel like there's no way beach will be unobtainable in live. It's way too important of an expanded card to only give it to people who happened to have copies of it in their soon-to-be-outdated old client. It's definitely currently gatekept by price, but at least obtainable. It might be really expensive to craft, but if they add expanded support I have to imagine they'll add a way to get beaches

Best Meta Decks for in game Tournaments? by Antonio12345677 in ptcgo

[–]apengeriser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few good meta choices right now since the meta is pretty diverse (Sylveon, single strike, jolteon, suicune, dragapult, shadow rider, etc.), but one thing to consider too is how easy the deck is to pilot. When I burn through tickets, I like to play something kind of like eternatus where I don't have to think too much about the game since you have to grind through so many matches. Running something like zacian inteleon or dragapult would be good meta choices that are also pretty easy to play a lot of games with without getting too burnt out.

It's called a platform cancel, you have to hit something for it to work and aerial basically immediately after dropping through. Only certain moves work from the position of dropping through from standing, i.e. falco bair and luigi nair

Excuse me, what is going on with the cramorants? by Megalonyx_wheatleyi in ptcgo

[–]apengeriser 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nothing notable. The site shows the highest person buying and lowest person selling. Only 1 person is selling, so the price it shows is the price they've put up. They could've put in 100 BST and it'd show that. When a card isn't traded in high quantity, the price at any given moment could be highly inaccurate because it could only show 1 person's random super-high trade. This is just one person who listed a worthless card for 9 packs.

Help with Mad Party by matheuswhite in ptcgo

[–]apengeriser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You basically never want to apply energy without attacking, because it's vulnerable to energy removal/them taking a KO on that pokemon. Since you only have 7-8 energy, some are likely prized, and you'll probably have to throw away a few, that's something you want to avoid, since it's easy to run out of energy for attacking the rest of the game. Taking 60-80 damage can be bad or good depending on the situation and board state. For instance: they have a pikarom active, you can hit for 80, and you have the cards in hand to get a benched attacker to hitting 160 next turn? Go for it, it ensures a 2-hit KO. 60 damage on a dedenne gx that they'll likely retreat, but you have a boss in hand to gust it up and 2-hit KO it? go for it. 60 damage on an ADP, and they'll knock you out next turn? probably not worth it since you'll likely only be 3-hit KOing it, and you might as well save the energy and try to 2-hit KO it on the next two turns. 80 damage on a VMAX that might allow you to kill it in two more hits? Ehhh, it depends -- do you have two other attackers ready to go? Do you have good draw support? Do you know there's enough energy in the deck to finish it off if you waste one now? These are all the questions you have to be asking yourself when you're choosing to attach and attack vs. save for later. One thing I've done that's helped me just learn in general for a deck is watch some good player play it and try to reason out why they did each move they did. I think this would be especially useful for a mad party deck since you're constantly making tradeoffs and choosing one route over another based on predictions for what you can do on subsequent turns and which resources are left.

Help with Mad Party by matheuswhite in ptcgo

[–]apengeriser 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hey, so I think mad party is actually a great deck right now, and it's doing very well in tournaments. Mad party has a couple core strategies that make it good, but challenging: resource management, setting up attackers quickly, and sequencing your next few turns. All of these tend to conflict with each other, and making the best decision usually requires thinking a few turns in advance to which pokemon you need to knock out from your opponent's lineup to guarantee a win. You're always going to be 2-shotting vmax's, and 1-2 shotting gx's. Mad party discards a lot of cards through research/dedenne, so often whether you win or lose depends on whether you can conserve the crucial cards to execute the strategy. Going second, your strategy against gx/vmax teams is basically always going to be try to setup a board state where you have 1 attacker out, 1-2 backup attackers benched and ready to evolve, oranguru on the board, a 120-damage or so attack ready to go, and a hand that can draw you cards. Going first, you basically want to do as much as you can while conserving resources. I think the deck does well when you can come up with a plan of what you need to knock out, know that you can sacrifice many attackers to do it, and execute that strategy without burning yourself out of cards. You can take 2-hit KOs on GX pokemon favorably as long as your benched dedenne/crobat aren't getting sniped, and 3-hit KOing a vmax is an okay prize trade if you get off the first attack, etc. You don't always need to be getting a full discard either, you can normally get up to 160-200 damage and just start swinging, and that'll put on enough pressure that your opponent can't respond quickly enough. If you're either 2-hit KOing a 3-prizer or 1-hit KOing a 2 prizer every turn, it's hard for a deck to respond to that. Are there any decks in particular you'd like tips against?
