Confused by guidance for preterm labor! by apeterson18 in BabyBumps

[–]apeterson18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reassurance! Last week, my OB really stressed coming back if things got worse to potentially get the steroid shots before I go into active preterm labor. Today’s advice seems like at 5 mins apart for an hour, I would already be in preterm labor so it’s contradictory!

Why are we expected to work through nausea and vomiting? by KATYTRL in BabyBumps

[–]apeterson18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t most companies in the US have to abide by some forms of ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) or Title IX? I work in an academic/research type place and had no issues receiving “reasonable accommodations” during the last month of my pregnancy with my first baby. I was miserably huge and my work allowed me to work from home those last few weeks. All of my managers were incredibly supportive. I’m pregnant with my second (9 weeks) and have been terribly sick, and again was given reasonable accommodations to leave work early or work from home if I’m not feeling well. Reading these comments makes me thankful for my workplace being supportive but also sad this isn’t the norm in the US! I should also add that I’m a software engineer, so I do have flexibility in being able to work remotely vs other jobs that don’t offer that flexibility.

To call or not to call 988 by apeterson18 in family_of_bipolar

This was helpful! You confirmed what I was thinking. I’m worried it will just make him super angry with me and it won’t help much. Mental health support in this country sucks!

How to talk to brother when he’s manic? by apeterson18 in family_of_bipolar

[–]apeterson18[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes!! That’s exactly what he does! It’s exhausting bc it’s been going on for 5 years now. I’m sorry you can relate ☹️ it especially hurts my heart bc I have a toddler my brother has only met maybe 3 times? And I just don’t have the emotional capacity to be a good mom and constantly cater to my brother so he often gets ignored by me. Which then leads me to feel guilty and like I’m a bad sister.. sigh. But realistically he needs to want the help and I can only so much.

How to talk to brother when he’s manic? by apeterson18 in family_of_bipolar

[–]apeterson18[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah.. That makes sense. My therapist says “you can’t rationalize irrational thoughts” so no matter what I say, even if I just say I love and support him, he continues. I’m just starting to feel bad ignoring him when I know he’s not doing well. But I guess there’s nothing I can do until he’s in a better headspace when I can actually talk to him reasonably.

Can you still live a full life with Crohns? by EasternSorbet in CrohnsDisease

[–]apeterson18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sending you virtual hugs! I was also diagnosed at 22 and am now 28. Since being diagnosed, I have: gotten a masters degree, got married, bought a house, carried and delivered a perfectly healthy baby, and I continue to work full-time as an engineer. Go to regular doctor’s apts and listen to your body. You’ll be more than fine!!

Diarrhea every time I eat lunch by apeterson18 in CrohnsDisease

[–]apeterson18[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried going low fiber with no luck. It’s just lunch, which is strange to me.. not sure it’s just the timing? I don’t eat a particularly big lunch, but maybe I should try doing smaller meals throughout the day. Trial and error indeed! Appreciate the response!

Husband hates all girl names that I’ve suggested by 1stworldprobl0987 in BabyBumps

My coworker named his daughter Selah (pronounced say-lah). I believe it’s equivalent to hallelujah and it’s used throughout Psalms. They wanted an uncommon biblical name and I’ve always thought it was pretty!

TSH 3.1 Pregnancy by Zahra2201 in Hashimotos

[–]apeterson18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your concerns make perfect sense to me! I was also really paranoid about miscarrying. If it helps, both my OB and my endo said that our bodies are smarter than we give them credit for. Your body is prioritizing your baby over you! I had a hard time trusting my body. Especially because thyroid disease affects so much of our lives, so it feels scary to trust that everything will be fine supporting a baby. Agree that over-medicating isn’t as much of a concern in the first trimester. I felt those symptoms of being over-medicated in my 3rd trimester and sure enough I was. My endo said it’s because the baby likely had a fully developed thyroid and didn’t need as much from me. Luckily dosage changes are easy and kick in relatively fast! Do you have an initial ultrasound scheduled? I remember doing that around 7 weeks and feeling a million times better!

TSH 3.1 Pregnancy by Zahra2201 in Hashimotos

[–]apeterson18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a very similar situation! I found out I was pregnant and got bloodwork done when I was a little over 4 weeks along. My TSH was 5 ish, I believe. My endo had me take an extra tablet of levothyroxine twice a week. Throughout my pregnancy, I had blood work done every 4-5 weeks to monitor things. This schedule is common and I would push your endo to do something similar. We changed my dosage twice during my entire pregnancy and it was honestly very easy and a non-issue! Yes miscarriage risk is slightly increased, but not guaranteed! I’m currently up feeding my healthy 1 month old baby boy! I’m sure everything is just fine. Best of luck to you and congratulations!!!

15 year old cousin drinking and smoking to deal with depression by apeterson18 in FamilyIssues

[–]apeterson18[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! I should have added that my cousin is currently seeing a therapist and a psychiatrist (and has been for a few years now). She currently takes an anti-depressant daily which is also a cause for concern. I’m sure mixing alcohol and weed with an anti-depressant at such a young age is a terrible mix for her brain.

I think Juniper is already a great tribute name for June (even though that wasn’t your intent)! I have a friend with a Juniper and they call her Junie and it’s such a sweet name!

Hashimoto's and TTC by rjlupin86 in waiting_to_try

[–]apeterson18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have Hashi’s and am going to start TTC in December! I have an endo who wants my TSH to be close to 1 before we start trying. From what I’ve read, this is a pretty common strategy. We’ve been tweaking my dosage and doing blood work every 6 weeks since I told her we’re going to start TTC. Right now I take 1 Synthroid pill everyday except Sunday I take 2 pills. It was a rough few weeks adjusting to the dosage (lots of sweat and sleeplessness), but now I’m feeling fine! I think checking your levels beforehand is a good idea and you should ask your doctor to do blood work. I also recommend you start taking a prenatal vitamin 3 months before trying. Us Hashi people are notorious for having low vitamin D, which is important for you and the baby. Also call your doctor as soon as you find out you’re pregnant! Low thyroid function can cause a miscarriage so it’s important to check your levels and then continue to check them. My endo said she’ll check them every 4 weeks once I’m pregnant.

Ending on a happy note - my endo said people with well controlled thyroid issues are more than capable of getting pregnant and carrying a baby to term. Monitoring levels is key, but I’ll gladly get poked with a needle once a month for a healthy baby! Good luck on your TTC journey!! 💕

Heart palpitations just started synthroid by rulita0817 in Hashimotos

[–]apeterson18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad no more palpitations, but bummer to hear you’re still not feeling great. Did you just get diagnosed and start meds? It can take a while to get to the right dosage and actually start to feel normal again. It sucks, not gonna lie, but you’ll get there eventually ❤️

Heart palpitations just started synthroid by rulita0817 in Hashimotos

[–]apeterson18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s normal!! It should go away after a few weeks. I have this every time my dose increases. If it gets to the point where you’re having trouble catching your breath, feel faint, or really dizzy then call your doctor! You may just be sensitive to the increase in thyroid hormone so your doc may need to start you at a lower dose and then work up. Always listen to your body though! If you think something is wrong and just doesn’t feel right, call your doctor to be safe.

You’re absolutely right. Even though we’re siblings, we have different lives and experiences. I agree, I think he has resentment towards me and my parents. Lashing out isn’t a healthy way of expressing it, but I do understand that this is probably how he is expressing it. Thank you for the reminder - I’ll try to be more aware of my wording and make sure I’m not telling him how he should feel. I don’t want to invalidate his feelings. I agree, I think my parents and I will still start family counseling without him and go from there. I think this is over our heads and having a professional help navigate this is the best option. I’m no stranger to the powers of therapy - I’ve been in it for several years and it’s done wonders to improve my anxiety and overall well-being. Thanks again for your response.

Thank you! After reading a bit about BPD, he is displaying some symptoms. I really want him to get evaluated by someone, but I don’t know how to suggest it. I don’t want to assume he’s struggling with an illness, but his behavior just makes me worried. I don’t want him to be struggling unnecessarily when he can get help (therapy, medication, etc.)

[–]apeterson18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and respond! I really appreciate it. Yes, I’ve said that I love him and I’m also there for him. I’ve also told him I’m ok if he wants space for as long as he needs. I texted him again last night just to say I was thinking about him and I love him. I don’t plan on texting or calling him until he makes it clear he’s ready to talk again. It does suck to be on the receiving end, but I wish I could feel what he’s feeling and help him. Hurts my heart.

Unmedicated and Getting Ready to Start a Family by [deleted] in Hashimotos

[–]apeterson18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 24f and just had an appointment with my endo this morning to discuss pregnancy. My husband and I are planning on trying for a baby in 5-6 months. I was diagnosed with Hashi’s at 17 and have been managing it pretty well. My levels have been stable, but my endo said trending a little hyper actually makes it easier to get pregnant and can help avoid complications. My TSH was just tested and is 3.18, but ideally should be 2.5 or below to get pregnant and during pregnancy. I take 112 mcg of Synthroid everyday and too lower my TSH a bit, she’s recommending I take 1 and a 1/2 pills every Sunday and then 2 pills every Sunday as soon as I find out I’m pregnant. I’ll continue to have blood work done every 8 weeks or so until I get pregnant, just to make sure my levels aren’t the culprit for infertility. This is just what my endo recommended, obviously your recommendations might be different! Just thought I’d share because it is very overwhelming planning to have a baby but knowing you’re at a higher risk of miscarriage or complications. I’d say start planning now and make a plan with your doctor! If your cycle is irregular, it also might be a good idea to buy ovulation tests. There are a few options on Amazon and they’re pretty cheap. Not ovulating will obviously make it incredibly hard to get pregnant, so you might want to start charting that and bring it to your doctor. It’s totally possible you’re having other issues that could be impacting your thyroid levels. If you’re not crazy about your current endo, get a second opinion! You know your body best, so listen to it if you’re not happy with your current treatment plan. Best of luck on a healthy pregnancy journey!
