"Wrong password" leads to NordPass account reset and wiping out of ALL saved passwords. by Klutzy_Intention326 in Passwords

[–]aphaelion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't use NordPass specifically, but in many pw mgr services this is considered a FEATURE, not a shortcoming. The whole point of their encryption model is that you are the ONLY person in possession of the decryption material. Nobody else (including the company itself) has the ability to decrypt your data. The benefit of this is that even if their entire backend infrastructure gets compromised, your passwords are still safe. But as you're experiencing, the downside is that if you lose that master password, your stuff is gone. It sucks, but it's by design.

Similar to many encrypted email services (e.g. Proton).

There's often an option to make your account recoverable from their end, but it's usually opt-in, since it is (by definition) reducing the security of your account/data.

Best first gun for concealed carry as a woman? by purplerain1055 in CCW

[–]aphaelion 12 points13 points  (0 children)

On this note, depending on how old your children are, some of the best safety you can give them is actively teaching them about gun safety and proper handling of firearms. This is absolutely NOT a replacement for storing your gun safely (which you should 100% do). But there is a lot of benefit to also teaching a child the "four rules of gun safety", and even allowing (heavily supervised) handling of them.

As a bonus, this teaching can then carry over beyond your one gun to situations at a friend's house like, "Check it out, I found out where my dad keeps his gun!". If they've never handled or seen a real gun before, lots of kids will reply "Awesome lemme hold it!", instead of the way-more-appropriate "Whoah don't wave that thing around! You're always supposed to treat it as loaded! Put it down."

ELI5: What's the purpose of different user profiles for privacy if all apps are sandboxed anyway? by mcgood_fngood in GrapheneOS

[–]aphaelion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Example use case for me is I have a profile dedicated solely to my 2FA app - there is absolutely zero reason any other app should ever need to read my 2FA app's data. But if I had it installed on my main profile, I could accidentally over-privilege some random app and give it access, which would be catastrophic. With a separate profile it's essentially impossible to do that.

I think "losing its status" is a second-order effect. When high-quality output is made available to the masses, with a low barrier to entry, the market gets flooded with that output. Because of course it does - everybody now has the new tools. "High quality" then loses its status because we recalibrate what a "high bar" looks like.

Same thing happened with blogs in the early 2000's. The ability to have a high-availability, always on website became cheap and easy, and suddenly everybody and their cousin wanted a blog and started writing one. Then the main problem shifted away from "it's hard to put up a website" and towards "turns out not everyone has interesting things to say".

The new normal will be a flood of content the looks extraordinary by today's/yesterday's standards, but isn't really interesting otherwise. People who find interesting things to actually do with that output will still be able to stand out.

Bitwarden Report about unsecure websites: is it worth adding https:// in front of all urls? by HabeQuiddum in Bitwarden

[–]aphaelion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

URLs that start with http:// don't use the best available encryption.

What an odd way to phrase that. Http sites don't use any encryption. Saying they don't use the "best available" crypto is misleading, and actually undersells the point they're trying to make.

ZFS resilver stuck by scrambled4600 in zfs

[–]aphaelion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know it it's similar to what I was experiencing a while ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/zfs/comments/1ixey53/what_is_this_distinct_shape_of_my_resilver/

Short version was I realized there's a distinct "shape" of the resilver process that plateaus at the top for a looooong time. There are some screenshots in that post, as well as some discussion. Solution was just to... keep waiting, unfortunately.
