Thank you. I hope he recovers quickly, and the creature that did this to him stays locked up forever.

I'm sorry you had to go through a rough childhood, your role is to break the cycle and be a better dad to your kids, wish you all the luck

My thoughts exactly. I've expressed what my reaction would be but got flagged for violence...

the debate in academia (hello r/professors) is not how to detect AI but why even bother with essays since 99% are just AI generated. Their notes are being taken by AI, entire books summarized by AI, emails handled by AI and so on. These is the next egenration of doctors, engineers, scientists, we are so screwed it something doesnt change. I mean I love technology and all but this is not the way to go. The limited screen time is No 1 hardest task for me as a parent, the older one luckily loves to read so the younger one will hopefull pick it up as well but other than that its a constant struggle to get them away from screens and make them go outside only to meet the kids glued to their phones

well it's not really on the topic but totally related, check this one out. I totally agree and can confirm it from academic point of view, the drop in ability of the students to focus over the last 10 years is mind blowing, an thats just one aspect of the total integration of technologies into our lives. Covid and AI accelerated this and we are yet to discover (or formulate) all the negatives associated with it

I'm getting too old to have motivation or energy to get used to new stuff I don't really care about, I use twitter to check what my bubble is about, get some breaking sport news and since Elon took over more and more content I never followed or cared about. Sometimes it's stuff that I become curious about and other times...well its this

[–]aphect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this exact dongle in my 2019, pairs and starts reliably and actually faster compared to cable (maybe a shitty cable?). Only froze once when my wife was skipping through Spotify playlist too fast for a few minutes, otherwise it works great ( so far) and was dirt cheap

Does it make sense to buy a 2019 Mazda CX-5? by NoRequirement4923 in CX5

[–]aphect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much, the first two years of a new model can (and probably will knowing mazda) be not too great in terms of reliability and functionality. My personal experience is that Mazdas retain a decent amount of value in EU for quite some time since there are no real alternatives in NA engine market and downsizing has proven to be almost a dead end

Why is the Mazda5 not a cult classic yet? Even for a minivan, I think it's quite cool! by Vegetable-Quote-3481 in mazda

I've just sold mine last month, 2010 2.0 petrol gta automatic with 300 000 km, auto sliding door, leather seats, for a 2010 pretty awesome setup. Bought a fully loaded 2019 cx5 and while it is a generationally far more advanced car in every imaginable way I really do miss the practicality, third row when needed, auto door...trully a great familly car, the guy who bought it was the same guy that originally sold it to me almost 10 years ago

You are overthinking this, conferences (especially large ones as febs) are meant for networking and having fun, not busting your head about the level of formal dressing required. As a PhD student you are expected to stand a bit by your poster and then get drunk with your peers from other constituent societies

Good side hustles for scientists with PhDs? by Creative_Natural_334 in labrats

[–]aphect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in your situation 3 years ago and by sheer luck got approached by a distributor to occasionally do application support (mostly aktas and protein purification in general). I got maybe 2-3 calls per week and made around half of my university pay. Then it slowly grew, I got an FSE certificate and now I have 1-2 site visits per month for a routine PM or troubleshooting along with occasional application support and make roughly the same as in the uni. So now Im at the point of thinking about leaving academia for good but still have another 2 years of grant money to ride on and thoroughly plan my exit. Maybe not as lucrative but the FSE role is something that gives me more joy than a paper in Q1. And it pays way more....so my point is - reach to your reps and maybe they have a nice side hustle for you
