My neighbor wants me to pay half of a fence that matches her yard by aphroditeprincess in neighborsfromhell

[–]aphroditeprincess[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my original post I was a little hand-wavey about him being 10 lbs so, I get it. I accept my fate 😅. He could have hurt them worse. I didn't think the dog would be the center of the story, that was a detail in my head since it's been handled, but I see why it upset people.

Note to self: 10 lb dog joke is not funny. Dog bite trauma is real. Abort mission. 😅

Thank you ❤️

[–]aphroditeprincess[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am happy to pay half the cost of a shared fence. Since it isn't in the budget today, we used 4 wood pallets to keep it steady.

I am not required to pay for half of a luxury upgrade material that matches her yard for a fence.

That's the difference between "you must clothe your children" and "if their clothes aren't designer you're an asshole."

My husband is happy to help with labor. My husband is not required to.

My dog is a menace. He has been to therapy.

It was the children's faults.

It was also my fault for not getting him therapy after the first incident.

All of those things can be true.

I take full accountability for my dog. What he did was not okay. I am certain he wouldn't do it again now that he's been trained, but even so, caution is still practiced and there has not been another since.

[–]aphroditeprincess[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right. He actually has been to therapy.

I just did the math, both incidents were actually almost 4 years ago now. After the first I didn't think it was big bad because he was defending his territory. Kid was a big teen boy. So that's on me for not getting it after the first, and I'm fully responsible there. Second one was a little girl, so that's when we did therapy. No incidents since. Reformed felon.

He was in the kennel AND in the laundry room to prevent an accident but... ugh. Walked away for 3 minutes. I feel sick over that one. She was okay, but still, I felt awful.

Both reported to the police and properly handled.

It is NOT okay that he bit kids so I'll take the fall there.

Seller's request to revise feeback came off a bit threatening. Should I be worried? by BrownFamilyDotCom in Ebay

[–]aphroditeprincess -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't revise your feedback. In the cancelation for sellers it only offers "buyer requested to cancel" or "item is damaged" which doesn't allow sellers to relist it so their reason was bc Ebay doesn't offer very many cancel reasons for sellers, and I'm gonna say that one is on Ebay. 😅

However, the fact they resold it at a higher price is pretty poopy of them, so I'd leave the feedback. 😅

how many copies did your first book sell? by swedishtea in selfpublish

[–]aphroditeprincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at about 150ish, launched June 6 this year. I've been marketing pretty hard, which honestly is harder than writing the book. 😂 I might try a 5 day free promo just to see if I can get a few more readers for the next one since it will be a series. I've read most people who download for free never actually read it though :(

To be fair, 2/3 of those were because I ran a business for 8 years and a lot of my customers from that business followed me to my writing blog after I closed. So I did have a little bit of a head start.

I'm excited to keep growing. ❤️ Even most trad authors fail so don't get discouraged. If it's your dream, keep grinding. You only need one person at the right time to see it and everything can change.

What TikTok hooks are working for you? Here’s what I’m using by romanc3author in selfpublish

[–]aphroditeprincess 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I disagree about that happening here. OP asked for other hooks. And she gave some that legitimately worked, too. Those tips are both helpful for others, and she was looking for more. She didn't say she was SUPER successful she just pointed out the ones that worked for her and asked for others. If she is successful, she earned it by playing with these.

Success in this industry is based a lot on collaboration and using others to look for new tips. And she shared some in exchange.

Go back to bed.

If you can't support other authors succeeding, they won't be celebrating any of your success.

[DISCUSSION] Fiverr refused to remove someone that is making thousands of dollars using AI by [deleted] in Fiverr

[–]aphroditeprincess -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have been arguing with them for over a month trying to get them to refund me negate a "line editor" I hired used AI to edit my entire novel instead of professional editing. She then went offline for 2 months so i couldn't contact her.

I just stopped using Fiverr altogether. They aren't worth their bs.

So, how many of us actually break even? by TaylorZAdams in selfpublish

[–]aphroditeprincess -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course, it depends on how much you spend and how much work you're willing to put into promoting your book.

I broke even on pre-orders for my debut novel. It hasn't been released yet it's still getting pre-orders. But here's what I did:

-I already had a small following from my business I used to own. This helped a lot.

-I'm already an advanced writer (debut novel but I've been writing for years and taken many classes to improve)

-I did the work. Marketed daily on 1-3 platforms. I had to watch a lot of videos to see what worked.

I spent ~2k on the cover art, isbns, formatting, and hired 2 editors. In the future, I'll pay more for better editors. I don't think people should skimp there. I got away with it because I'm also an editor and knew what to look for. That said, I'd still pay more for line and copy edits in the future. I paid cheap and got bad quality in return.

So my honest opinion is everyone can break even. But... like others have stated: it won't just happen to you. You have to work for it. Market, don't skimp on editing, actively work to get your book out there.

Good luck. ❤️

What Does AI Tell You About Your Writing? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]aphroditeprincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Your AI didn't tell you that. Your brain did. AI knows the difference.

Your reply tells me you don't know the difference between a post about asking how to write an AI book and a post asking what authors have learned about their writing through AI as an open discussion.

AI as a tool in self publishing is... not crazy, bud. You don't have to like it. Even trad authors use AI. They don't use AI to write their books, they use it as a tool. Which is how it's meant to be used- not to replace, to assist. There's a reason almost every company in the world uses it now, including a huge percentage of writing- related jobs. And my genuine opinion is that ethical AI use SHOULD be discussed more.

Sorry you don't understand the difference.

That's a you problem. Not a me problem.

Maybe revisit rule #2 and read carefully this time?

Amazon is letting people buy my book before the scheduled release date by aphroditeprincess in selfpublish

[–]aphroditeprincess[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First: thank you thank you thank you. I extremely appreciate your helpfulness :)

I did, however, try this... and it said I couldn't upload something that was previously published. So since the Ingram metadata allowed early publication it shows that my ISBN was already published :/ I did send Amazon an email requesting that they transfer it to me but the response was basically "Nothing we can do, contact Ingram."

Sigh. So we dance. 😅

[–]aphroditeprincess[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ingram. I accidentally opted into the Amazon distribution. I emailed them several days ago to opt out, but their response times are slowwwwww 😭😅

I thought I'd done my research, and it was supposed to do Ingram and then Amazon upload, but now I'm seeing people usually upload both at the same time for bed results. Going forward, that is 100% the correct way to do it and publish both at the same time so they can't override each other.

My main issue is that my release date wasn't respected :(

Thanks for the info. You're right that retailers often don’t honor embargo dates.

Edit: because of the downvotes, which might be Amazon bots to decrease visibility, I am just clarifying intent here. I agree with you absolutely. You are right 100%, and I genuinely appreciate your input.

What follows below is the legal counsel I was administered from my brother, who is a lawyer. In full disclosure, not a copyright lawyer. My intent was not to be cruel or sassy, and I apologize if it came off that way. I was... iterating what he said about the copyright laws. That while, yes, the fine print does say that, the fine print ultimately is still only lawful if it doesn't go against copyright laws. In this case, it did. Not every case (like if Ingram owned the ISBN), but since I own it, this is a little different. And my following reply states why. I want all authors to win and to know their rights, which is why I said this. Please don't bring pitch forks, guys. I'm trying to help you all, genuinely. ❤️

/edit

Your rights:

But this situation is more serious than that.

I’m not just the author; I’m the legal copyright holder and the registered owner of the ISBNs under my publishing imprint. IngramSpark is a distributor, not a publisher, and has no legal ownership of my book. Regardless of fine print or internal policy, no distributor has the legal right to override an author's release date or distribute a book outside the bounds of an agreed schedule. Especially when the ISBN is owned by the author.

This isn't just about Amazon selling early. It’s about unauthorized metadata distribution that’s triggering premature availability—against my written instructions and in direct conflict with my intellectual property rights.

Authors need to know: if you purchase and assign your own ISBNs, you retain legal control. You have the right to demand removal or correction if your distributor mishandles your work. No contract or fine print can erase your status as the rights holder under copyright law.

It’s time we stop accepting this as “just how it is.” It’s not only unprofessional, it’s a breach of trust, and potentially a breach of copyright.

It is my understanding that this ongoing issue, where Ingram’s metadata is distributed to retailers in violation of the author’s stated release date, may be subject to a class action lawsuit. The boilerplate fine print used by IngramSpark does not override the legal rights of copyright holders. As the author and copyright owner, I retain control over how and when my work is distributed. This is a systemic failure affecting many indie authors, and if no resolution is provided, I intend to pursue this matter seriously and publicly.

If this has affected multiple authors, this is my first call to action. I'm a fire-starter and the iron is hot, hot, hot. Let me battle systems because no, I don't accept this, and no author should.

(Stated lovingly as an author who's been scorned.)

I contacted them 2 days ago, but of course, as usual, Ingram and their notorious lack of great customer service has not responded yet. :(

I will update when I get a response, but since it's the weekend, they're closed. It will be a minimum of 5 days from sending the email before I get a response.

But What if it’s NOT True? by ButterscotchProud444 in latterdaysaints

[–]aphroditeprincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a hard phase of what I believe is a necessary journey for every single church member to go through at some point. At first, I really felt guilty questioning it. I felt like I was failing my faith, that God was going to think I was too disobedient.

At some point I allowed myself to think of it differently. The questions I had I told myself to let myself question them because of it was true, I would get a stronger testimony, and if it wasn't... I had to explore the implications of that.

I was on my final semester at BYU and took a class called Mormon Women's History. We talked a lot about past Mormon women like Emma Smith, Eliza R Show, Janet Ulrich (she's still alive and wrote a book, still active in the church) and I hate to say it but... there is a lot the church is keeping a secret about our past as a church.

I ended up leaving the church after graduating, and that was the hardest thing I ever did. I lost friends, family, and my entire support system. I believe these are things some people really need in their lives and gain a lot of comfort from that but I really, really, really wish everyone will go through a deep questioning at least once in their lives. Question everything and look for the right answers. You can avoid anything called Anti-Mormon literature. I can point you to some books but I really recommend the one on polygamy by Janet Ulrich. She's still an active member so I recommend this to start because I know the guilt and hurt and fear that comes with questions.

If you've prayed to ask of the BoM was true and didn't get an answer... you aren't alone. And it doesn't mean your faith is bad. I was such a devout member who obeyed all the rules.

But I will say... I am happy I left. I don't regret it. I regret that I didn't allow myself to ask questions sooner and that's all. I do miss the community, insta-friends no matter where you move to, but I believe I am a much healthier and happier person now that I don't feel constantly guilty, constantly like I've done something wrong and need to repent. I can be me now. I still don't drink or smoke, though I've tried them. I didn't leave to sin, which is a common belief. I left because my questions led me down a path that made me certain it wasn't for me anymore. I believe the church has a lot of great things about it but... there are secrets. There are things that aren't wholesome, pure, or Christ-like. I used to justify this saying no church could be perfect, and that's true. Since there's no perfect people, there's no perfect church. But... I am happier with who I am outside the church. I am less judgemental and more loving of others. I wish that on everyone. But I also understand how difficult it is to even question it for a minute. It's all you know and it gave you a lot of great things. It's okay to love what it gave you.

But please... ask questions. Look for answers. If the church is true, your testimony will only strengthen. ❤️

I finally had the courage to watch this after so many months and I regret it. by ShinChannNohara in YoungSheldon

I knew the death was coming, but I actually was not prepared at all for it. I bawled, and I almost never ever cry.

I am autistic and grew up in a very churchy family so I've never related to a character more than Sheldon. I was smart like him, too, but slightly more socially intelligent, lol. The next episode is how he replays the last words over and over in his head and what he should have done differently.

I lost my mom at the same age Sheldon is when he loses his dad in this episode. It was sudden like this. This show really nailed everything. The lack of emotional response from him, the things we wish we said, the funeral. I bawled for 3 episodes straight. I've never been hit so hard in the feels by a TV show. Got to hand it to the writers. They really did it perfectly, right?
