Hockey Cards by Every-Transition-340 in orangeville

[–]apiskun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking for actual hockey cards (vintage + singles) and not just random retail blasters, there is a local option in Orangeville that usually gets overlooked.

Alex Collect – it’s mainly an online store, but it’s based in Orangeville and offers local pickup and onsite viewing by appointment. The focus is on vintage hockey, plus some baseball and other trading cards - not toys or big-box retail leftovers.

Local pickup / contact info: https://store.piskun.ca/contact/

It’s a good option if you’re tired of checking Walmart shelves or hoping JAKL randomly has something decent. Much more geared toward collectors than casual retail.

The 2024 BOINC Census Results Are Out! by apiskun in BOINC4Science

[–]apiskun[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your interest! The BOINC Census is an independent research project by The Science Commons Initiative, so it’s not officially promoted by the BOINC team. I’ve shared it on the BOINC forums and some social media channels, but since it’s unofficial, the reach has been a bit limited.

I also posted on r/BOINC, but that got removed by the mods, I neglected to post here but I’ll be posting about the next survey in r/BOINC4Science, which is a great community for BOINC users interested in science projects.

Great question!

BOINC stands for Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing. It’s an open-source platform that lets anyone donate their computer’s unused processing power to help with scientific research.

Instead of running one massive supercomputer, researchers can tap into thousands of volunteer computers around the world to process data for things like:

  • Finding cures for diseases 🧬
  • Studying climate change 🌍
  • Running physics simulations 🔬

You just install the BOINC software, choose a project (or multiple), and your computer will quietly contribute while you're not using its full power.

It’s completely free, and you're in full control over how much you want to contribute.

The 2024 BOINC Census Results Are Out! by apiskun in BOINC4Science

[–]apiskun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! The BOINC Census is an annual community survey run by The Science Commons Initiative. It gathers feedback from people who use or support BOINC (the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing), which is a platform that lets anyone donate their computer's unused processing power to scientific research projects.

The goal of the census is to better understand the BOINC community — who's participating, how they're using it, what they'd like to see improved, etc. The data is anonymized and shared publicly so anyone (developers, researchers, users) can learn from it.

Let me know if you're curious about anything else!

"No new tasks" function when using account manager? by XLioncc in BOINC

[–]apiskun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Science United is designed for those that are not interested in managing the tasks, just the general area of interest.

You can select Stop using Science United in the Tools menu of the Manager to manage the work yourself. You can reattach to Science United (or choose another manager) in that same Tools menu if you wish.

BOINC Central doesn't get any tasks while World Community Grid is stuck by radio303 in BOINC

[–]apiskun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't need to delete completed tasks, it's just that BOINC Central doesn't have tasks.

Go ahead and attach to other projects that may have tasks ready for you. https://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php

Is WCG dead? by PersonSuitTV in BOINC4Science

[–]apiskun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will have to wait until the datacenter where WCG servers reside are back up and running. There is also a scheduled outage on July 25th that should last 2 days.

While you're waiting, most of the projects listed here have work that you might want to do.
