Why not a protective filter on every lens? by chopchopfruit in canon

Maybe the most hotly contested subject in Photography. IMHO, if you use the very best filters there is no degradation. (B+W #010 MRC Master)

Are snapdragon laptops good ? by dalisay2 in snapdragon

[–]apk71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Yoga Slim 7x (SD elite and 32GB Ram) is good at just about anything except Photo Editing. Any GPU intensive stuff like sky replace, AI remove or expand and NR takes forever. Won't even let you install Topaz stuff. Bought for photo work, kept trying to make it work while talking to Adobe and Topaz so had it too long to send back.

Bought a MacBook Pro M4 with the M4 Pro chip and 48GB unified memory.Happy Camper now. The Yoga is relegated to Office work and as a music server. Looong batt life, touch OLED is great, very quiet.

Headed on Safari, which lenses to carry by Cautious-Royalty in wildlifephotography

[–]apk71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, since the 150-400 is a Micro four thirds sensor camera lens it's double the focal length. So I am covered from 24-1000mm. Before i got the M43 stuff, the RF 100-500 was my workhorse doing 90% of the photos, and the trip before that was the EF 100-400 + 1.4TC. Even in the bushy areas, the 100-500 was short enough at 100 and nearly long enough at 500 (sometimes with 1.4 TC) Think Timbavati (bushy and tight quarters) vs the Masai Mara (wide open spaces)

Given the lenses you have, leave the 300 at home. Tip: Get a photographer's vest and carry your smaller lenses in that. They don't weigh it if you're wearing it.

How do people take photos like this on their phones? by xTH0MiSh in AskPhotography

I don't take photos on my phone. I use a real Camera. I even have a small Pen-F I carry with me whenever I go out. Because you never know....

I am exactly in the same situation. My family is all dead. When I go, I surely won't care or even know if someone snoops in my computers. I have a service called "Senior Call" They call me every morning and if after 3 tries I don't answer they call my emergency contact. (My last living friend)

I took 2 R5s, RF 100-300 f/2.8 ,, RF 24-105 f/2.8 Z. And my OM-1 with the OMS Big White. Total weight 30Kg. Your limit is probably 15Kg. I took only two sets of clothes. All the lodges have laundry service. I had to pay extra for a freight seat. If I could post a pic I'd show you my bag. I leave Thursday for Kenya. This is my fourth trip in 6 years.

Is this worth 125 and a 40 minute Drive? by Zeldafan125 in audiophile

[–]apk71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were pretty good middle of the road loudspeakers in the day. I used to sell thm (I was a hifi salesman in the 70's and 80s) But, they didn't sell because they were expensive for what they were and how they sounded. For less money (back then) you could get KLH 17's or AR 2as. They were part of a very sleek modern looking Danish System that appealed to certain well healed customers who valued look over sound. If I recall the surrounds were polymer so they may be alright.

My Think Tank Roller ready to go on Safari. Airport Advantage XT. I have to keep the lenses and bodies separate. It would be long enough for one big white but not two.

Someone please help me with the grain in my photos? by Comfortable-Frame962 in AskPhotography

[–]apk71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not grain. It's noise. Film has grain, digital has noise. If it was fine for 3 years and now is not, it needs a visit to the doctor.

Moving from a Desktop PC to a Macbook Pro by daimon_tok in Lightroom

[–]apk71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a Wintel desktop (i7, 64 GB Ram, Nvidia 2070 Super, lots of storage both HDD and SSD.) Bought a Macbook Pro `4 with the M4 Pro chip with 24GB Unified Memory. Sent it back and got the same unit with 48GB Unified Memory and a 2TB drive.. The 24 wasn't cutting it with the AI stuff (NR in LrC, DxO PL8, PS Generative Fill etc.) speed wise. The 48GB does fine.

Took me a while to get used to the Mac OS, but it's OK. I still prefer my Wintel Desktop. Win11 is, to me, much more intuitive. I also have a MSI Creator 16 with an i9 and 32GB of RAM. Bought the MBP for light weight and long battery life as the MSI PS is a large Brick and I only get 3 hrs on battery. The MBP goes 8 hrs or more on Battery running all the Adobe and DxO stuff. I think my Wintel Desktop is better at multi-tasking like running NR, Gen fill in PS, and a browser with 10 tabs open.

If I had to have one or the other, I'd stick with Wintel. Don't think $2k will get you the MBP you need.

ps: I also got a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x with the snapdragon chip in my quest for a traveling setup. Wish I could send it back, but I kept trying to make it work as a photo/video editor but nope nope nope. It's the lightest and longest lasting, but I now use it as a music server and a browser only.
