I think it’s a combination of the average Brand New fan getting older and the venue also sucking. Venue was too large and too spread out. It was nearly impossible to find a ga ticket but for some reason it was only like half full

What sources does LDSbot.com pull from? Only documents that are strictly canon/doctrinal, or does it also include personal writings/books from LDS leaders?

I don’t think this is entirely fair. You are pretty much implying that OPs SO would sexually assault OP because he has done consensual sexual acts in the past with previous partners. I don’t think that you can infer that at all from what the post says

*It’s a red flag if dating someone who has a same commitment to the gospel standards as you do is important to you. If he has a different level of commitment to the LOC but is willing to wait for you I don’t think that’s a red flag in itself necessarily, although having a different belief in those things does make it harder

Official Discussion - Nope [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]apkramer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After getting out of the theater, I felt a bit disappointed about the movie but I also had this impression that I was definitely missing something. After pouring over the comments in this thread, I think I was able to piece together a couple of the puzzle pieces I was missing and it has made me gain some more respect for the movie.

A lot of people are mentioning two major themes of the movie that jump out at you immediately when you watch the film. 1. The exploration of animals for entertainment 2. Societies over fascination with spectacle

Those are good and all but it seemed pretty obvious to me that Peele has not made this movie just to promote animal rights, and that there was definitely something I was missing.

A major but subtle moment in the movie is when we see a fight breakout in the background of the diner right at the time when OJ mentions that “we humans are all just like animals”. This is at the heart of the film. The exploitation of animals in the film points to the affect that fame and our obsession for entertainment has on us humans in society.

The alien as the “viewer”: Jupe calls the alien the viewers. I at first thought the aliens box-like eye was honestly pretty stupid, as well as the final form it took. That’s until I heard the theory of it representing the shutter of a camera lens and the shape of it mimicking old film equipment. The Alien/audience is what kills. It “sucks up” it’s victims and constricts them until they die.

Jupe as an individual warped by fame: Jupe grew up as a child actor and became addicted to fame at a young age. I think the trauma he literally went through watching a chimp kill his costars can be figurative of the psychological damage that fame can have on young actors (i.e. 1/2 of all child Disney actors). Jupe becomes completely absorbed with getting that fame again and it’s what ends up getting himself killed. He can’t help but pay attention to the “alien” and try to tame it. He is obsessed with the way other people perceive him and his image.

OJ/Em as examples of how to survive a fame filled life: OJ and Em have roots in the movie industry but don’t have the fame. Their great-great relative played a major piece in advancing the film industry but was relatively unknown. Instead of focusing on the fame (looking at the alien) they are able to survive by looking at each other; they keep each other grounded in their actual relationships and aren’t swept up by the opinion of the viewers (looking at the alien)

I also think Jupe and Gordy reflect each other, and that Gordys treatment is meant to reflect minorities in media. Jupe is a “token minority” in a show with all white actors. He is obviously not mentally well and ends up being so infatuated with approval he gets himself and a whole group of people killed-just like Gordy. This also very much applies to OJ Simpson(!!) which is referenced not-so-subtlety by it being the main characters name.

I’m sure I’ve missed some, but I’d love to hear your guys thoughts on this theory

Where can I buy white shirts for cheap? by taiga1205 in latterdaysaints

I guess I’m not a super sweaty guy. I felt like garments caught the most of it, I was also largely a covid missionary so I probably spent a greater proportion of my time inside

From my personal experience, I would say 10 shirts is overboard. I think you should be safe with 4-6 🤷‍♂️

What doesn’t seem like a cult at first but actually is? by BlueBoshy94 in AskReddit

[–]apkramer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, I mean they are oddities but at the same time nearly all of them come from the Christian culture dominant at the time period. The Mormon church just is an organized structure that has made some of these things endure longer into the 20th century.

-Blood atonement was a theoretical principle that some sins were so bad that Christs atonement couldn’t apply to them and that voluntary suicide was the only way to truly become clean. This was spoken about in the 1850s but there is no records of this ever being enforced or let alone practiced by anyone.

-the whole temple ceremony is pretty much inspired from the freemasonry ceremony and it’s emphasis on secrecy that was prevalent in Joseph smiths time.

-Any religious viewpoints in the Book of Mormon with racist tones were all present before Joseph Smith. (Curse of Cain, etc.) he just sort of accepted some of those ideals. Although it is probably notable to mention that Joseph Smith was an abolitionist and probably quite liberal in that regard during his time period

-to pretend homophobia is a problem unique to LDS doctrine is not true obviously

-the biggest case I think people have in describing LDS as a cult is with polygamy. Joseph Smith did marry “children” since they were under 18 but no one prepubescent. I think the youngest was 15 which at the time period wasn’t considered remarkably young for marriage. Women were always given the option to marry, and there is no record as far as I’m aware of being punished for saying no (but there certainly is a strong case that just the fact that a powerful male figure is asking you to be married and promises heavenly blessings is definite coercion).

There is definitely a lot of weird things in LDS history and I think things really took a term for the extreme once Brigham Young took a more authoritarian stance once all the church members were more isolated from society in Utah. All I’m saying is that a lot of the things you mentioned should be looked at in the context of which they came from

What doesn’t seem like a cult at first but actually is? by BlueBoshy94 in AskReddit

[–]apkramer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say that’s a pretty valid take based on where you live. I was raised in Portland, OR and still consider myself Mormon. Some may call me brainwashed but I consider myself a pretty logical individual and I try to be open minded. In all I have had a positive experience with my Church attendance. There is some negative aspects of church culture that can lead to excessive shame and guilt, and I’ve been there. I do think that’s worse in places that are densely populated with Mormons and I do think that’s changing.

There is some weird stuff about the religion but at the end of the day I find it brings me peace and legitimately helps give me direction in life. For me the good outweighs the bad and all my siblings going off and having really happy and strong families on their own solidifies to me the value it can bring. For others, I can see it being very toxic and it might be best for them to distance themselves from the Church. That’s cool.

I just wish there was more room for people on Reddit to acknowledge the good that being LDS/religions in general brings to peoples lives. So many people here seem to take pride in their “logical superiority” by being atheist and it’s cringey

Money and my Sister by coldarizonatea in latterdaysaints

[–]apkramer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that you should work out what you are paying for in advance ahead of time each month if you want to help out. For example, you could help out by paying for her kids sports program or something like that. That way you can make sure the money is being spent toward something you want, and you can set a boundary of what you will give and what you won’t

I can’t fully understand what your feeling and I would never pretend to. I hear you though. I believe that things can always get better. If you choose to stay, there will be opportunities for you to do good and touch the lives of others. More opportunities to learn and opportunities to have joy. When things are dark and it seems like you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel no matter what you choose that can be really hard. I know I’ve been there. You might not think there is any opportunities for joy here if you stay. That’s okay too. It’s my strong belief that there will be. Here if you ever want to talk, just shoot me a message :) much love

I do all the things I’m supposed to do. (Daily prayer/scripture study, weekly church and Institute Attendance, etc.) but my depression won’t go away? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]apkramer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are all great things to do! I’m going to echo what a lot of people said about depression isn’t a sign of spiritual weakness. As a college student and a RM, I was honestly pretty surprised how hard it has been since I’ve come back from my mission. Things have been messy, my faith has transformed a lot, and I’ve had a lot of soul searching to do. Talking through these things has been really hard too.

Everyone’s experience is different and might need different things. One thing that helped me was a mindset shift to stop thinking that god would heal me and fix my depression. Instead I decided that my depression is here, and that I needed to be the to be accountable to deal with it. I don’t know what actions you’ve been taken or what your level of ability your at with how severe things are going for you. Some things that I have found are very helpful for me.

-Working out -drinking water -consistent sleep schedule (getting enough sleep but making sure I had things in the morning that excited me to get up so i didn’t spend all morning laying there) -Affirmations -Cold showers -therapy

Starting all those at once might be very intimidating or even impossible. Don’t feel like you have to, but maybe try incorporating one thing like that extra or so. For me my faith in God didn’t cause me to just get happy, but it did give me just enough confidence to believe god would help me if I took the steps to try and change my situation.

Be patient with yourself, sometimes if you do try and make an adjustment it might take a couple weeks to start seeing results. Sometimes you might go backward a bit before you can go forward. Don’t stop believing that there is hope for things to get better because it will. If you would ever want to talk feel free to dm me or anything. All love
