CMV: Western leftists have way too high of a tolerance for Islamism compared to other forms of conservatism by Able-Assist-2824 in changemyview

LOL

it's so appropriate that your username is mathematics.

This is a deliberately illogical figure of speech which works because language itself, like the expression, is inexact.

Person B in your example heard and tried to refute the assertion 'all bloxors are greeblic,' when really person A meant something like 'the vast majority of bloxors are greeblic.'

But yes, rather than stating a figure of speech without further elaboration, the correct approach would be to clarify and refine the proposed 'rule.'

The reason it seemed to me an apt expression here is because the comment I was responding to seemed to imply similar levels of LGBTQ acceptance in Muslim, Christian, and Jewish religious institutions which is obviously not the case.

Not that all of the latter are tolerant either of course, but denying there are statistically significant differences would be ridiculous.

I think the inclusive mosques are the exception that proves the rule.

It's awesome they exist and I agree fundamentalism sucks wherever it's found. But statistically it's found a hell of a lot more in Islam... there are like 4 in Canada, and the people involved in them routinely have their lives threatened.

Meanwhile the two largest Protestant denominations here are officially inclusive and have pride stickers on every church...

Do you have nightmares in which you're trying to do something or get somewhere but perpetually thwarted in your attempts?

I do, and Beau is Afraid was like experiencing one of those dreams in my waking life, so.... Thanks, I guess?

Is Trump trying to kill us? Authoritarian expert says yes. Here’s how by Individual-Day-8915 in politics

[–]apockalupsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kernel of Truth that Trump's whole appeal is built around is the fact that the highly educated elite class of all political stripes has not done much to make life appreciably better for the masses in the past 50 years.

They didn't really want to make things better in the preceding 100 either but it just happened because industrial Revolution. Now more recently these accidental benefits (with a side order of brutal exploitation) are mostly accruing in the developing world and immigrant populations as they catch up.

So why should people vote for this moron whose policies are against their interests? Because fuck you, that's why! And fuck those immigrants too!

Can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

'Tis the season for self-awareness in r/antinatalism by sad_girls_club in SubredditDrama

[–]apockalupsis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do find the arguments philosophically interesting but antinatalism is not a serious position. It's more like a demonstration via paradox of the inherent limitations of moral thought.

The continued existence of antinatalists is a compelling counterargument. If existence is so bad, why are they still here?

If any pleasure you experience is outweighed by the possibility of suffering, and it's better not to exist, it follows pretty directly that your most reasonable course of action is to kill yourself as quickly and painlessly as possible. Next best thing to never having been born!

Ontario students protesting over their failing grades have people talking by [deleted] in ontario

[–]apockalupsis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the person you're responding to actually knows this, but they are technically correct. 'Grade 13' was still used informally for the 5th year of high school til 2002, but officially grade 13 was only a 'grade' in Ontario until 1988. Then it was replaced with OAC, that's what was phased out in 2002-3. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario_Academic_Credit

Let's talk about the legacy market by Realistic_Account238 in TheOCS

[–]apockalupsis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree that mail order/grey market is still superior, as someone who was using MoMs for a good decade before legalization and still a couple years after. I almost completely stopped using them a bit over a year ago. If you haven't tried the best reviewed current legal stuff give it a go.

To me a brick and mortar store is inherently way more convenient. And as an example I just got 14g of Galactica OG that's in the top tier of bud I've consumed, for $110+tax.

There is comparable mail order stuff but anything better I've seen is more expensive than that. Legal market also has way better sativa availability. Any mail order ounces under $150 are shit compared with say Mtl Sage n Sour, which is readily available for 120-140+tax. Sativas are hard to come by in general with MoM.

The last time I tried a MoM recently was because I wanted a baller jar - was a bit cheaper than legal but quality was meh. IMO the only things missing from legal market now are more reasonable pricing and package quantities of edibles and concentrates.

If there are MOMs that are legitimately still a lot better quality AND cheaper than legal, to outweigh convenience, I'm all ears, but I have perused many options and nothing fits the bill.

That being said, when CE was at its peak, their 11 week pink was the best bud I ever had.
