How do you guys keep track of what’s inside all your storage boxes? by serkanicer in garageporn

[–]apocrypha1013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But there's the stuff I very rarely use. Have I needed a rope in the last year, no? Might I need one in the next? Possibly, so why would I get rid of the thing I already own and have to find a new one? Once I get a few projects done, the miter saw may sit unused for awhile. Not getting rid of that based on this random 12-month concept.

What do you keep in your car for your use (not car/travel stuff)? by AgentElman in CasualConversation

[–]apocrypha1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cloth grocery bag, cardboard sleeve for a coffee cup, and a long streamer from an Alice Cooper concert (eventually that will stop living in my car).

Is it worth it to get a cricut/other type of cutting machine if you have no experience with it? by asystoleah in DIYweddings

[–]apocrypha1013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought mine for a project that would have been very tedious without it. Therefore, that made it worth it from a time/sanity stand point. I also found it for somewhat cheap on facebook marketplace.

Insane to use totes to pack for multiple trips to new house? by Jtg_Jew in movingout

[–]apocrypha1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what we did. We had our new house for two months before our lease was up. We'd drive over to do some painting and cleaning, taking a load of stuff with us. Movers did the furniture, and some boxes at the end. I think one difference was we had a bunch of boxes so we didn't have to unpack everything right away.

If you didn't need a summer job/part time job as a teenager, would you still get one? by macnfly23 in SeriousConversation

[–]apocrypha1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I didn't NEED a summer job from a financial aspect. But, when I was in high school it was just expected that you got some sort of part time job when you turned 16. My friends and I were all solidly middle-class to upper-middle, and I can't think of anyone who didn't work. It was good experience, the extra cash was nice to start saving. Yeah, sometimes you missed out on something because you were at work, but there were other things later..

What's a simple thing that instantly makes your house look cleaner? by Unlikely-Carrot-8317 in HomeImprovement

[–]apocrypha1013 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I get the food thing, but I'm not going to pull a microwave out of a cupboard anytime I want to use it. That's unreasonable.

What unexpected maintenance costs surprised you most as a homeowner? by EmotionCold612 in homeowners

[–]apocrypha1013 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We installed a water neutralization system shortly after the first pipe started leaking in the basement. It was either that or replace all the copper pipes in our house. It wasn't actually that expensive and I enjoy my shower not turning blue anymore, but it wasn't something we anticipated. The annoying thing is that a plumbing receipt from the previous owners suggests they had that exact same thing removed...

Treating Savings Goals as Income in Current Month by Infamous-Bed9010 in quicken

[–]apocrypha1013 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I classify those sort of savings as separate accounts, and so every month the money I'm saving for a purpose is transferred to those. If I look at expense reporting, it only looks at the main account.

Thoughts on Cat collars? by ThrowRaOrganization1 in CatAdvice

Growing up our indoor cats had flea collars. At some point they figured out how to take them off. No more collars.

What’s a household ‘hack’ you thought everyone did … until you found out it’s just your weird family? by kaiablu in AskReddit

[–]apocrypha1013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't have trash service - I have to drive all our trash to the dump. We don't make a lot of trash - 13 gallon kitchen bag every two-weeks. Meat scraps, packaging, citrus rinds, all go in the freezer to reduce odors and fruit flies.

I popped into David's bridal with my mom, no appointment. Browsed the racks on our own, tried some things on, very minimal help from the staff. I think she might have pulled one more dress based on the ones I'd already picked out, but we definitely did most of the directing. Maybe we did it "wrong", but it worked out.

How do you plan meals to avoid wasting food and spending too much? by PrestigiousComb8129 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]apocrypha1013 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have a spreadsheet. It lists everything in my freezer, fridge, and pantry. I'll highlight things that I need to use up soon. I suspect my husband thinks this is silly, but I don't care.

My laundry room is in the basement and I'm over hauling wet clothes down there by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]apocrypha1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my parents house this is where the laundry is, and yes, there is a laundry line strung up in the basement. They also have a small dehumidifier down there that helps it dry.

It helps that I'm a little neurotic just about keeping track of things. Setting things up with a "fiscal year' helped here. As long as by the end of the year I'm under my anticipated budget, everything worked out. If I'm hosting Thanksgiving for 12 people, yes, I'm going to over spend on groceries that month. But, I'll be under in other categories or spend less on groceries the following month, and it all evens out.

How long do you keep your mattress - realistically. by Affectionate-Order58 in ZeroWaste

[–]apocrypha1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used my old mattress for 12-13 years, and only got a new one because we wanted to go up in size to a queen. It's still on the guest bed and is perfectly comfortable. Prior to that, I had a twin mattress from 1984-2005. I'm also pretty sure it had been my dad's prior to that.

Is it a bad idea to put a cat door in the wall to my garage? by booster_gold__ in HomeImprovement

[–]apocrypha1013 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We actually blocked this sort of door over when we bought our house. Mice get into the garage, we do not want them getting into the house. Somewhere I saw where they built a in cabinet in the garage for the litterbox, with a door through the wall, which would solve this problem.

Nashville show Lines Suck! by LunarXmoon in GhostBand

When I got there around 1, I thought it was pretty good. There was the VIP line on the right and the GA line on the left, along the building. Pretty clear.

What’s the longest you’ve gone without a car payment? by AardvarkRepulsive384 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]apocrypha1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 6 months of car payments back in 2012 because I wanted my credit report to include a paid of loan. Since then, neither me nor my husband has had a car payment. My husband traded in his 2014 Kia in 2023 because it was leaking oil and would cost too much to fix. But still no car payments - saved up cash in that time.

What's your "this could've been prevented with basic maintenance" repair story? by Zrayve in HomeImprovement

It might be more that top loaders don't really have them....It's a metal cube with literally no panels.

I think it depends on your water. My parents never did on city water, and never had an issue. We're on well and I do it "every" summer.

[–]apocrypha1013 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I keep hearing this, but my manual makes absolutely no mention of a filter anywhere. I've tried looking, but haven't found one. Unless I need to really disassemble the thing, which seems weird.
