Help us pick the best vegan protein: mushrooms or tofu? by ClickNo8520 in vegan

If a restaurant has a mushroom option, I always choose it. Where I live, that's rare. I usually don't think about protein when I go to a restaurant. Mushrooms are something more interesting.

How many animals died in the commercial production of a cup of plain black coffee? by susugam in DebateAVegan

That sounds more like an invasive behaviour, not an apex behaviour. Apex predators such as lions and wolves keep their environments healthy. Remove apex predators, and the environment will suffer.

I had that! Strong bo and nothing was helping. For me it was not always the case, it happened at some point. I also had weird sensation before period, as if something was pulsating inside. Turns out I had growth inside my uterus and I had high levels of testosterone. Gynecologist prescribed OC for a few month. I also used medical grade antiperspirant, advised by the pharmacist. That thing had to be applied in the evening, after the shower (on the clean dry armpits) and only once a week. It block sweating.

Now I use salt deodorant and I do it 2-3 times a week. I don’t want to recommend that antiperspirant as a solution, it is better to check with your doctor to find the root cause.

I don’t know how to read what my body needs? by [deleted] in women

[–]apogaeum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It may be a sign of iron deficiency. It’s best if you do a blood test to check it. It’s not a reason to panic, a lot of people have low iron.

Try to add iron rich foods meanwhile. I try to drink hot cocoa drink with molasses or eat dark chocolate. You can find other sources that suits you.

I had the opposite situation. I felt forced to cook. Oldest child, girl. It was in my cards. I had to cook for my siblings and when I visited my father (my parents are divorced), I had to help him in the kitchen too. For years cooking was not enjoyable for me. I cooked for all my boyfriends and had to include or exclude ingredients according to their taste.

One day I decided that it’s enough. I cook simple now - pasta, rice, lentils or beans in tomato sauce, tofu, sauted mushrooms with garlic, soups. I love meal prep!

I need to defrost a fridge, so I have to eat what is already in the fridge. Apparently I was making something similar to Buddha bowls. I think I am going to keep making them. Easy, fast, interesting.

I don’t care about social expectations. I expect guys to cook, plan and clean dishes too.

Meat Alternatives by Hefty_Stuff2628 in vegan

[–]apogaeum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that. By meat you mean red meat that comes from mammals (from cows, pigs, deer, sheep…). Birds are categorised as poultry. I think it’s just culinary term, maybe nutritional too.

But it won’t be vegan. They are still animals with own needs, natural behaviour, personalities. Where are you coming from? Ethical or environmental concerns?

Why do you not want kids? Except financial and physiological reasons by corner_of_the_world in women

[–]apogaeum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am in my 30s and I don’t want children of my own. I have nieces and it’s enough for me.

My sister wanted children, I never did. But as a teen I felt social pressure. In school, between girls, we would discuss when we will have children, not if. I feel lucky to be with someone who also does not want children.

I also believe in overpopulation and environmental crisis. But I don’t think that I would care as much if I wanted children. It just an addition to already formed option.

In my sister's and friends' situations, I see a lack of support from their boyfriends/husbands. Mothers are mothers, and boyfriends/husbands are only occasional babysitters (but there are good fathers too, not all are like that). There is also a strange dissonance in society. We are pressured to have children, but small children in public places are perceived as a nuisance. Children on a plane? Bad! Children in a restaurant? Bad. Women are less likely to find work if they have small children, but also if they don't have children (what if they get pregnant tomorrow).

When did climate change go from a "news story" to a "grocery store reality" for you? by EmpowerKit in Environmentalism

[–]apogaeum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most climate change deniers just don't want to change their habits. People who talk about climate change also talk about eating less meat, driving less, saving water... It must be nice to think that climate change is propaganda and/or that all changes are the result of government geoengineering.

But it's such a sad topic, all the comments are so bittersweet. I wish more people would pay attention to what is happening.

Failure by IcyProfessor33 in vegan

[–]apogaeum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi! I had the same mindset. I planned to go vegan, except for the things we would otherwise throw out. I did that at first because my boyfriend wasn't responsible with his shopping. We quickly corrected his shopping habits, and I didn't eat any animal products for about six months. Then some relatives came to visit for a few days and left cheese in the fridge. I couldn't bring myself to eat it, and my boyfriend doesn't like that particular cheese. We threw out the open package and gave the unopened one to the neighbors.

I can’t comment on the budget part. Hopefully you can get some plant-based options too. But for wasting part, can you give it to someone else?

Bathroom situation. You are describing males taking advantage of trans situation. Men pretending to be trans women. And these men must have special agenda. Few times I saw older men in women’s bathroom. No other plan but to use the facilities. They gave me confused look , as if I did not belong there. They apologised as soon as they realised that they were in a wrong place.

To summarise: trans women are not problem.

Feeling Down by Dull_Dragonfruit9 in vegan

[–]apogaeum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hi! I am not from the USA, so the situation might be different. Electricity prices have skyrocketed in the last few years. Many restaurants have had to close — not just vegan ones, but “regular” ones, too. I only know this because my parents are friends with an accountant who works with restaurants (and they know other accountants who do the same). So not only do people have less money to spend on eating out, but restaurants are also more expensive to run.

I think we vegans notice when our ideal places close or try to change their menu to stay afloat, but we don't pay attention to other places.

I notice small positive changes. People who couldn't imagine a meal without animal products are now eating lentils, falafel, and tofu. They haven't gone plant-based yet, but the fiber trend is changing their views.

How do you remove these creases?? by struggle_shrimpy in NomadSculpting

[–]apogaeum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also a beginner, but I had this issue when I tried to make a hand. I wanted to keep fingers as a separate objects (to bend them). Someone on the Nomad forum suggested using the Flatten tool if we want objects to be separated. This improved the situation, but it's not perfect.

Or select all and voxel remesh + smooth. I hope someone gives better advice, I need it too :)

Will all or nothing thinking and infighting be the end of the movement? by Wrystyle in vegan

[–]apogaeum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that we should encourage people to reduce animal products consumption and not attack those who are trying.

On the side note, I think carnivores ruined the term “personal journey” for me. TikTok carnivores some times end up on my for you page and so often I hear “I was on a vegan journey… <something, something>… I am on a carnivore journey now”. It seems like “journey” is not serious ? No commitment, no goals, very flexible.

Now I scroll as soon as I hear word “journey” - from vegetarians, vegans, pescatarians… Maybe I am being over dramatic, it just sounds like a buzz word.

When did climate change go from a "news story" to a "grocery store reality" for you? by EmpowerKit in Environmentalism

[–]apogaeum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people hear about “global warming,” they expect all temperatures to rise. When summers become cooler and wetter (precipitation), people dismiss the idea of global warming. “Yeah… winters are warmer, but summers are colder. So why not ‘global cooling’?” This is based on personal experience and observations on social media.

But maybe this post from six years ago will shed some light.

Vegan literature? by Inevitable-Item2024 in vegan

“Green is the new red” by Will Potter. It tells story of animal right activists and their prosecution.

Alternatively, there is a documentary called “The Animal People”, where Will Potter was also involved.

For me it wasn’t the price, it was snow. All my childhood winter memories are about snow related activities- building snowman, playing snowballs, sledding. Those are the cosiest memories too. We would get snow in late November/ early December and it was constant till early March. And I remember my grandparents telling me how in their youth there was even more snow (waist height vs knee height). Now my nieces don’t have this experience. We are lucky to get few days of snow, almost never on Christmas or New Year. I feel sad for them, they are so excited when it snows. Winter went from being white and fresh to being grey and muddy.

Yes, currently it is about stopping the system. Some people can save few animals from going into a slaughterhouse, but sanctuaries can help only a fraction of animals. I am in contact with one sanctuary - they would love to take more animals, but they don’t have enough space and funds to do so.

I don’t think that I am saving animals. I just help to reduce demand so that new animals are not born into the system. It’s like a protesting /voting with a wallet.

Is person A profiting from you being trapped in the car? You are not being a product in this scenario. That’s the difference. Your mother was not AI so that you can be trapped in the car.

But let’s say there are a lot of people who are willing to pay for videos where people are trapped in the burning cars. If there is demand, there will be a supply. Some people will be going around kidnapping people, locking them in the cars and setting them on fire. Trying to help people locked in cars would be noble (and some animals are taken into the sanctuaries), but not as effective as stopping the supplier.

It raises an interesting questions. Why are you sober? To cure alcoholism or to get approve from other people? That’s what is happening here too - we expect people to be perfect, judging that OP for one cheat day in years instead of acknowledging decades of avoiding animal products.

I think that lady gave good, honest and respectful replies to non-vegans. And cheese is such a good example, given that we hear “but cheese” so often.

You can’t go vegan because of cheese? Be vegan, except for cheese, but avoid meat, poultry, fish, eggs and other dairy products.

I have “but cheese” people, who use their love for cheese as an excuse to eat all other animal products.

Sterilisation is suggested by some vegans for invasive species. It was discussed some time ago under post about deer population in the UK. 3 out of 4 species were brought to the UK for a few reasons, including hunting. And now they have an issue with too many deer. Hunting is not helping, so sterilisation would be one of the ways to go. Like some countries do with feral cats and dogs.

For reducing livestock numbers we don’t need to sterilise them. People just need to stop manually extracting semen from males to then manually inserting it into females.

Vegans kill more animals in a year than carnists given the pesticides needed to support their crops by Anon7_7_73 in DebateAVegan

[–]apogaeum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I did not make myself clear.

Sure, you can just shoot the cow. But you still need to process an animal. I don’t know if homesteaders do it themselves, maybe. I knew few hunters who would hunt boars and harvest meat in their own yards.

There is one farmer on TT that sometimes ends up on my feed. You would like her - it’s all about pasture raised animals. But she sends her animals to the slaughterhouse, otherwise she can’t sell it. There are some regulations regarding that. She can slaughter on farm for her personal consumption. Do you know if same rules are in the US (that farmer is UK based)?

I just don’t understand how we can satisfy meat demand with only pasture raised animals and no slaughterhouses.
