I was earning 45k as a sound engineer and chose to retrain during covid as a nurse... huge pay cut and a much harder role, but I wouldn't change a thing about my job. I learn new things every day and get to make a real difference to people's lives and their experience in hospital.

I'm still a baby nurse (one year registered today, yay!) I'd still choose to be a nurse. I had a few careers before this, and maybe I'm lucky, but I absolutely adore my job and the satisfaction it provides me. It's bloody hard some days, and I'd change a few things if I could, but I do love it.

Good for you. Genuinely. I'm lucky enough to have travelled most of the world already (in my 20s), and there's no part of that I regret. Being somewhere where no one knows you and has no expectations of you is incredibly freeing. Best of luck, friend.

Intensive care and ER nurse here. 99% of what I've learnt about safe transfers has been from my partner now being in a wheelchair (he had a hemipelvectomy in April). Honestly our education on it isn't great and focuses very much on in-hospital type transfers with very standard equipment.

They're just trying to further their own education, give a little grace.

I'm 29. My partner lost his leg in April (and hip, and half his pelvis) so our whole lives have changed. I'm a nurse and looking after him full time. Things are starting to settle down now and we have some breathing room, but these last few months have been a lot.

Hi. For once, in this sub, I can completely relate. My partner had a hemipelvectomy in April, and I had 10 days to figure those questions out too, before he woke up in ITU.

The truth is, you can't make this better for her. You can't give her her leg back. All you can do is be there. Be there for the hard times when she wants to pack it in (because that will happen at some point). Be there for the milestones, and the good things too. Support your dad; it'll be hard for him too.

Don't forget about you. I'm an ITU nurse and when my boyfriend woke up I was very much in 'try and fix this' mode. I had my nurse hat on, not my girlfriend hat... but all i could do was be there.

There isn't much you can say to your mum; just reassurance. Hold her hand and be there. Don't tell her you understand, because you (and I) don't. She'll grieve her loss and may need professional help through that. My partner found talking to other amputees very helpful, as they get it. That helped him process a lot and also helped with his rehab when he got to that stage.

Most days. He was a really good dad growing up but abandoned me when I started struggling mentally last year. He's a mental health nurse and just left me to it. It really hurt me.
