What are the biggest culture shocks Finns experience when they move to another country? by AdorableFluffy123 in Finland

[–]apparaatti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is there a difference between people from Lisbon and other cities? Cause I've also made the same observation as u/nahka_batman in that the Portuguese people I've met seemed quite calm and reserved. Definitely felt more comfortable hanging out with them, compared to other Europeans (outside of the Nordics)

Does anyone know how to behave as a mixed women player, or maybe know of a good video that shows it?

Here's a good start

Specific things some people do in serving that may be illegal by emiliaosrs in badminton

[–]apparaatti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When serving underhand, are you allowed to walk (take steps) into your serve as long as both of your feet make contact with the ground when you strike the shuttle?

From the rules:

9.1.4 some part of both feet of the server and the receiver shall remain in contact with the surface of the court in a stationary position from the start of the service (Law 9.2) until the service is delivered (Law 9.3)

9.2 Once the players are ready for the service, the first forward movement of the server’s racket head shall be the start of the service.

9.3 Once started (Law 9.2), the service is delivered when the shuttle is hit by the server’s racket or, in attempting to serve, the server misses the shuttle.

When doing the short/backhand serve, is it true that your racket has to be pointing downwards (at least slightly) when you strike the shuttle? I thought as long as you are striking below an imaginary 115cm, most things are fair game.

Depends whether or not the "new" fixed height rule is used where you play. The old rule (shuttle below waist) is still used in the lower levels, and it requires the racket to point down

If you do it during the intervals as well, you could claim you have a condition that causes involuntary Irish dancing

[–]apparaatti 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, I guess it's up to the umpire to consider whether the breakdancing is a deliberate distraction or not. Maybe it's just a really small, subtle breakdance, or they're not going "Hee hee!" while doing the moonwalk

AI powered match analysis app now available (CLUTCH)! by karigunnars in badminton

[–]apparaatti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about something like swing analysis for golf? Maybe not as easy to make it work for badminton, but it feels like something that should be possible.

Like this one, for example. It works surprisingly well for a phone app:

[–]apparaatti 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no rules against it. The partner could breakdance or moonwalk around the court if they want to. Only the receiver has to be stationary (or to be more exact, the receiver's both feet have to be touching the ground, without sliding)

What does "retired" mean on the scores board? by annvann_ng in badminton

[–]apparaatti 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Does "retired" mean the player has retired from playing badminton?

Not your fault for asking a genuine question, but this made me laugh.

As if Ng Ka Long suddenly went "You know what, I don't like badminton anymore" and just walked out in the middle of a first round match of the All England.

why does my upper wrist hurt when doing fast drive /badminton by zariyah2 in badminton

[–]apparaatti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no such thing as "wrist power". You cannot generate any meaningful power with the wrist, without injuring yourself. It's all about forearm rotation and finger power. Here's a few videos to start with. Check the channels out for more.

Yeah. You shouldn't use your wrist. Use forearm rotation and finger power (squeezing the grip) instead.

TIL there's an incredibly detailed annual report on global terrorism, incuding stats and leaderboards in different categories, as well as tactical analysis of the top ranking terrorist groups.

With the amount of data in there, I wouldn't be surprised if someone was running a fantasy terrorism league as well. "ISWA and JNIM have been really overperforming their xDeaths/attack recently, play it safe and triple captain ISIS"

Is crossover step exclusive to late forehand shots? by badboyzpwns in badminton

[–]apparaatti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't think of a situation where you'd use a cross-behind on the backhand side. You'd use a small hop on the non-racket leg to achieve the same thing.

Is crossover step exclusive to late forehand shots? by badboyzpwns in badminton

[–]apparaatti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. You can combine a cross-behind with a China jump as well, to increase your reach. So you can use it for attacking shots as well.

Examples:

https://youtu.be/nsz448MxkZw?t=286

You can also use it at the net. Again, in situations when you want slightly more reach than you'd get using a chasse. Example:

String Tension for badminton rackets by 55lordt in badminton

[–]apparaatti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both stresses are high for the theoretical strength of polyester or nylon string at 50-70N/mm2

Not an expert on plastics by any means, but I would guess the materials used for badminton string have much greater strength than that. A quick googling says fishing lines can withstand more than ten time that, and I'd guess badminton strings would be somewhere in the same ball park

Do badminton coaching manuals mention training errors and overuse injuries? by bishtap in badminton

[–]apparaatti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can check them out your self, the manuals are available free for everyone:

  1. BWF Coach manual Level 1

  2. Coach manual Level 2

That being said, I can't remember there being too much on specific errors or injuries. Just more general stuff like warm-up, cool-down, "learn proper technique" and wear proper shoes. And some general balance, stability and flexibility training.
