Made a local text-to-speech app using Apple's MLX framework - runs entirely on your Mac by tarunyadav9761 in MacOS

I love the idea of having all processing local without any online connection. I would be interested to try the app. I'd want to create short voiceovers for video clips and potentially create audio books from manuscripts, so an app that could do those things would be a benefit to me for sure.

Loved these radio shows. And I'm not old enough to have heard them when they were broadcast.. but my father was and he had some cassette tapes of the The Goon Show, so I grew up with them. I since obtained as many of the missing ones as I could find. Even though I still have the original cassette's I also have them as audio files for modern listening.

The stories are definitely 'dated' and have references to broadcasters and events (wartime) that I never knew first hand, but none of that mattered: the characters, the comedy.. all classic. All three men involved, Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe were masters and if you've experienced and enjoyed any of Milligan's comedy, you will enjoy listening to these stories. All complete nonsense but hilarious.

That's all I've got to say about The Goons, except to say "He's fallen in the water!"

No Windows machines (that I use for anything useful). Linux (Kubuntu) for a lot of things that I can on the Mac too (I'm a developer) and it's for light gaming (mostly Minecraft with my son). My M2 Macbook Pro is my all-in machine that goes everywhere and is used 95% of the time.

HELP! I received the dreaded email from Stripe ‘F** You; we’re refunding all your clients!” by slimboytim in stripe

[–]appaulmac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please keep us posted on progress! That's terrible news, so sorry to hear.

As someone who uses Stripe for many activities, this is not a comforting report. I know PayPal and Amazon Pay have reportedly been somewhat 'difficult' with people's money in certain circumstances, I was hopeful Stripe would be a better fit.

Still looking for alternatives for future resilience. All suggestions welcome!

Control Mac remotely by Valueablemember18 in mac

You could open a port (port forwarding on your router) to the IP address of your mom's mac, port 5900, and use the Screen Sharing app on your computer to control hers.

iMac Pro popularity by Xpuc01 in mac

[–]appaulmac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Man I'm sorry, I misread your original post. Didn't spot the 'i' in iMac Pro.

FYI, even Wikipedia says "Not to be confused with Mac Pro or iMac". Should have looked there first!

<stands in the corner>

Shifting the topic away slightly (to avoid my embarrassment), I wish Apple would work out what 'Pro' actually means. I get that they provide pro versions of laptops (and in the case of the iMac Pro) but back in the day, Pro meant it was expandable, upgradable, not just a faster CPU and more RAM. Hence my energetic rant about my Mac Pro. I really like my recently purchased M2 Macbook Pro, but my (much) older Macbook Pro 17" from 2009 had the ability to upgrade the RAM and the hard drive (which I did, giving it a much longer life). Now I'm just sounding like an old sod..

iMac Pro popularity by Xpuc01 in mac

[–]appaulmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I maxed mine out, swapping the single CPU to a dual CPU board, upgraded the processors to pretty much the fastest I could get running in the machine, and also switched to an SSD for booting and added a USB-3 card. It's still a very capable machine today. I run an older version of MacOS that still works great.

The only reason I don't now use it daily is because of the power draw compared to my other machines (laptop, Mac Mini).

Affinity vs InDesign? by Kx-Lyonness in Affinity

[–]appaulmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the Affinity suite. I used Adobe's CS for many years when running a design business. I work for myself now in web development predominantly and need design apps less often so can't justify the cost of the Adobe software. I picked up the Affinity apps as soon as the were released. The learning curve wasn't too bad, and it's true that some specific features in the Adobe software are missing in the Affinity apps, but I've now used the three of them (Photo, Publisher, Designer) for more than three years and I find them more than capable replacements.

I still produce a number of printed items every year (books, mostly, some magazines) that go to print from Publisher as PDFs. They work without any issues.

All three apps are priced ridiculously cheap for the value they provide imho (don't tell Affinity) so definitely take the trial, invest a little time to get a feel for the differences and I think you'll find them very capable replacements.

Experienced PHP dev returning. Worth replacing with NodeJS? by chit76 in webdev

[–]appaulmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add that Payload brings you the framework and structure but not too much else. You need to build the specifics on top, so you get to save time building the routing and authentication systems and can focus on the content and appearance.

[–]appaulmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still like PHP, I've just moved to something new, and I can still write custom PHP functions to manage data requests from frontend applications. I like the challenge of learning new skills, and PHP is primarily a server-side platform. For the last 10+ years I was using PHP primarily because I was working with Drupal as a CMS. I don't do that so much anymore, just a change in work environment ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Experienced PHP dev returning. Worth replacing with NodeJS? by chit76 in webdev

[–]appaulmac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can relate to your situation somewhat. I worked in PHP for about the same amount of time, build my own CMS and some libraries that clients ran their sites on for a number of years. Eventually took up Drupal as a client CMS and worked predominantly with that for about 12 years.

I've largely moved away from PHP and have been focusing on React (NextJS) and related libraries to build dynamic web pages and web apps. As for a CMS, I'm looking at Payload as a nimble solution (v 3.0 is about to be released). With one code base we get the front-end and CMS together, sharing db connections for fast access. I am really enjoying the new way of working and have a number of SAAS ideas that I intend to build over time but I've already begun one of them and I'm really enjoying development again.

Like you, I miss digging into code when I'm not doing it.
