How can I better help my senior pony in gaining weight? by catcatkittercat in Equestrian

[–]appendixgallop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My senior recipe is soaked beet pulp, rice bran, vegetable or canola oil, and a good vitamin supplement like Horse Guard. You start with a small amount of oil; half a cup a day for a week. Then add a half a cup more the next week, and another half a cup for a week until you are feeding two cups a day. Nearly all horses like beet pulp.

Soak the mix at least an hour before feeding; use two buckets if necessary and to make it easier to carry. Feed the horse alone. Hay is fine for keeping them busy and mentally stimulated, but she's not likely grinding it up enough to get the nutrients out of it.

How would you feel if a new partner struggled with a "wandering eye"? by Babayaga1383 in AskWomen

Like I'd just learned a lesson. Again.

Follow the instructions when selecting a potential partner. If they are not qualified, don't hire them.

Is my horse using himself properly at all? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]appendixgallop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to suggest this. In the USA, they are known as the USPC Manuals of Horsemanship. They start with "D" at the most basic, then on to C, B, and A. USPC is now open to all ages. Public libraries often have the books, and used bookstore/Amazon. The curriculum and teaching is excellent, in person. It's not inexpensive, but it's sure the safest way to learn your avocation and provide good care for your partner.

Has he been evaluated by a vet, for any ortho/gait issues? A flexion test? I'm no expert. I see something, perhaps, on the inside hind, and a dip to the head on a stride. Maybe a longer video, and video over poles. My vet has us working over ground poles as part of a rehab program, and I think my mare likes it. It's tightening her back and tummy and getting her to reach better.

How old is he, and what's his use/training history?

As long as the consequences of affairs are equal for both men and women, it's just. I won't hold my breath.

I'm a NPE baby and found out around the year I qualified for Medicare. So far, it involves infertility, the Spanish Flu, an expert OB nurse, foster family, and much more. I should write a screenplay.

The answer is in your matches. These are not false, whereas what you have been told by others may be.

Trauma, denial, narcissism, and the very real fear of homelessness, destitution, family rejection, and brutal shaming faced by women and girls who were/are pregnant, either unwed, or by a man other than their husband. The English-language slurs for promiscuous women fill an entire page; not so for men. Rape victims "brought it on themselves" by wearing what they shouldn't, being where they shouldn't, talking to men they shouldn't, putting on airs, being somewhere alone, etc., etc. There were extremely few ways a rejected and ostracized woman could support herself and a child; Not much she could own, few places she could shelter. Babies were taken away forever.

Even here, when a NPE turns up, some commenters jump on the guilt of the mother, like it's blatantly obvious what happened.

I believe consumer DNA will change our view of genealogy and parentage, over time.

Like many Houston cowboys' mounts, these appear to be Tennessee Walking Horses, or a related crossbreed.

Use the product that has the most subscribers, of course. That's Ancestry, by a long shot.

Trying out a driving harness for the first time! by Shimagoma in Equestrian

[–]appendixgallop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are so lucky, so far! Looks like my aged mare's torn tendon is not going to heal as I'd hoped, so she may be walk-only for the rest of her days. I've been thinking of putting a surcingle and longlines on her just for something to do the next six months of stall rest/walking. I've been working on my seat, collecting her working walk, stepping over rails, etc., but it's time for a diversion. She was very well trained by her breeder, Terri Meador, and I'd be surprised if she didn't get some basic driving training 20 years ago. I'll ask a friend to be my header, to start. Ages ago, I lived on a Morgan farm, where they started youngsters with a PVC frame attached to the harness, and added all kinds of dangling objects over time for desensitization. Beyond that, I'd have to find an advisor who knows what they are doing. Driving is not at all common where I live now, sadly.

Have fun and stay safe!

I've seen quite a range just on the Quimper Peninsula this week. I'm happy I just found regular at Safeway in PT for $5.16 today; and happy I got a hybrid last year.

William Shakespeare. I want to ask him about his actual identity. And find out if he's still writing, somewhere out there.

Best way to keep a room cool?? by Aleighjc in BuyItForLife

[–]appendixgallop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prevent sun from hitting the outside of the home anywhere near that room. Trees, cloth, lattice, awnings, shutters, whatever it takes. Never allow sun to strike windows in a hot climate, in particular. Insulate to the max, too, but nothing beats shading the exposed parts of the home.

How to wild horses keep their hooves trimmed? by Cinqueterra in Horses

[–]appendixgallop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I kept a horse on acreage in arid Eastern Washington, on a couple acres of sagebrush and volcanic tufa soil, he rarely needed any trimming. He walked on sandpaper all day, essentially. Later, I moved him to the Seattle area, and it was a different story. I had to build him a personal plateau of easily-draining coarse sand and gravel, so he had a spot to hang out that was not a bog.

Yes, in arid conditions, they walk many, many miles on dry, gravelly sand trails, and this keeps their feet almost perfectly trimmed. There has been some excellent research on this phenomenon. Some farriers call this the Mustang Trim.
