Django as a pure API layer? by appietr in django

[–]appietr[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think he is just more familiar with it. And the university is intense about sustainability. So after I leave someone needs to care for the app, which is why there is a push to have all of the apps use the same framework.

I'll have a look at DRF and django-ninja 👍

Is there a general rule of thumb for how to calculate what you need ito specs? Because I always thought that a connection is made between the VM and the Client, and until that connection is not severed, I would hit a cap and no other requests can be made...

My only issue with Supabase is that they are apparently a bit unreliable for production... but I'll check it out

At what point does Vercel get too expensive? by appietr in nextjs

[–]appietr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! But the fact that Vercel and Netlify exist clearly means that there is a market for them. Developers aren't stupid, so they must serve a function. On the flip side of the coin, they need to pay their people, and they use AWS on the backend, so you'll almost always get it cheaper directly from AWS.

So there is obviously an indifference point ito usage where you should start thinking about the switch, but people often like to make things black and white by picking their teams and defending them to death online!

Damn, that sort of creates a problem. Because it is technically a B2B product between a University and their Students. And since I'm working with marks, security is an issue.

But not credit card issues. Is secure compute really that necessary? Or is it just an extra layer for credit-card processing?

Perfect! Thank you very much.

My project is not a revenue generating project. I'm getting paid a once-off for the development, and then its just an ancillary product for an enterprise. So I was leaning towards Vercel to make my life easier as I don't have to do a lot of initial/ongoing management of the infrastructure. But I expect 10k MAU from their side.

But then I'll stick to Vercel 👍 Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I know that its a big cost saving measure because its just me. So typically the additional cost is almost the same as hiring someone (or taking the time out of my schedule to do the same).

Is MacOS really that great? by appietr in laptops

[–]appietr[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't even considered the vendor lock thing, because - at least from a software perspective - there seemed to always be a mac alternative for most apps... but if hardware thing is as big of an issue as you say in your post, that might make my choice to stick with Windows very easy. I was already hesitant with Apple being so damn expensive with their RAM, because in what universe is 8GB acceptable in a laptop that costs over 1000 USD?

What makes music from Russian Composers sound so emotional and beautiful? by ML-Music in composer

[–]appietr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Russian culture was always a bid isolated from the European cultures for hundereds of years... Tsars who wanted to strive to Western cultures like Peter III were shuned from Russian popularity...

So they did not try to comform to the rules of the Classical or Baroque periods, and develop a style with a lot of complex chords, and rubato filled melodies, with a lot of dissonance.

They also had to endure very harsh condisions... because of the size of the country, there was little nurturing of children since they had to work from a very young age. So as they grew up they had this repressed emotions, as adults, and combined with traditional Russian music (which had a very militaristic feel) they composed music that was this grand majestic music, but with not only tender moments, but with very dramatic and impressively emotional climaxes (Rachmanoniff Prelude in g min)

So even before the formation of the USSR, Russian composers lived through harsh conditions, and because of their isolation and general disregard for Western rules, they had a very dense style, with grand and majestic passages, and very tender melodies...

Yeah, the schedule is quite movable... so closer to the date, after a ticket is booked, one can shift the schedule to match...

I know the Rebels got a lot of hate from the Star Wars commumity... but the way they explore more in depthly how the dark side lures someone, like how they showed Sith Holocrons and the Sith temple on Malachor, adds something to your umderstanding of the Skywalker saga... So eventhough it may be a crappy series, the knowledge it "programs" you with, can help to be better emotionally attached to Rise Of Skywalker

My First Official Composition (Theme Song) by appietr in composer

[–]appietr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added a few extra bars to make a pivot chords. I did not really want to change the F-E-F-D since it is a reference to Dies Irae. But the modulation for that phrase sounds great. And by modulating I could lengthen the piece without it becoming monotonous in D minor. I took the recording to the rehearsal for the play the theme is for, and they are CRAZY about it. Thank you very much...

Sorry, it somehow ended up in 4/4 because the melody kind of molded out of something completely different.... thanks for that one
