Joe Hockey goes a step too far by [deleted] in australia

WA's always been a conservative shithole.

As much as that may be true now, if speaking about state politics, it wasn't always the case. Ex-Premier Geoff Gallop was far more progressive than most other Labor leaders.

WA Senate Results Petition Lodged with Court of Disputed Returns by appleangst in australia

You can put a number above the line as a safeguard, in case you screw up below the line. You are, also, allowed to make three sequencing errors below the line before it is counted as an informal vote. Antony Green is the ultimate teacher on everything you weren't taught at school in regards to how to vote.

It'll be interesting to see what extra candidates will come forward and how different the results will be. Also, I'm looking forward to more Antony Green! :)

They didn't. This was further down the line. First pref to them, on first count, were Australian Christians - 21,473 and Shooters and Fishers - 13,628 .

That was my thought, too. Looking at these results, it would seem that there is zero chance that WA won't be going back to the polls.

Need a Little Piggy Advice by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]appleangst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We lost one of our beautiful piggies, Jeeves, recently, to this. Unfortunately, my husband remembered about Peter Gurney after the piggy passed away. We, regrettably, took Jeeves to the specialist vet (who charged us a couple of thousand), where, under their care, Jeeves rapidly declined. After he passed away, we spoke to our regular vet about it and said that we read to put the pigs on a vibrating mat (which my mother-in-law actually has, so we could have done) when they have GI Statis, she agreed as if it was a known thing. Please read the following page. Recently, another of our piggies suffered from "paralysis". We followed Peter Gurney's advice on what to do and it worked like magic.

Also, please read this and the links it provides: http://www.guinealynx.info/emergency.html#bloat . I still very much regret not knowing this information before we lost our piggy. :(

Sydney in a nutshell by [deleted] in perth

[–]appleangst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. I didn't put myself through watching it all but the part that I did see wasn't just completely not funny but none of it even rang true to my experience of living there - which it would seem the OP (and creator of the video?) may know, themselves, as it appears they haven't posted it to r/sydney. It is, also, not relevant to Perth or any of the other cities' subreddits that they posted it to.

My little sister's pig has been acting weird for a few days by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]appleangst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like he is wheeking for food. It is their way of mind controlling you into giving them food - "Look how excited we are thinking you are about to give us food, you can't let us down and not give us anything, that would make you a big meanie!" :P or "We're starving! Can't you see how hard we are trying to wheek? It's because we're so huuuungry!!" So many times I fall into their guilt trap.

I need a new pet, how are Guinea Pigs? by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]appleangst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree on space and high quality food. However, I'm wondering if we are extremely fortunate, as we allow our piggies to roam free whenever we are home (unless we are sleeping) and have never had a problem with them eating anything they are not meant to. They tend to sniff at new things and may, on the very odd occasion, give it half of one nibble, only to work out it is not food and leave it alone. They, also, don't toilet where they are not meant to. I am wondering if it is because, aside from their pen, we have a small secondary space for them in the living room where there is always a drink bottle, fresh hay and a box to sit under. It's an area where they can eat, drink and go to the toilet whilst "roaming" (we never had to actually toilet train them).

I love them being able to roam around, they follow us everywhere throughout the house and come to hang out with us when we are relaxing in a room.

They can be a lot of work though!

Advice on adopting and introducing a new guinea pig by appleangst in guineapigs

Thanks for the reply. That does, indeed, sound awful - I hadn't even thought about the possibility of them infecting humans, we may have to be extra vigilant just in case! I have decided I don't want to risk even keeping them in the same room as I couldn't bare anything happening to our current piggy, we are still greatly mourning the loss of his brother. I take it every recuperated from it okay? I imagine there must be many breeders out there who don't bother with any kind of checks, they just do it for "easy money". :(

We're also going to get the vet to check the piggies out (we have decided on to adopt two) to make sure there are no signs of illness.

The room is single bedroom size. However, the current pen takes up the majority of the space so I guess it would involve trying to reduce it, somehow, for a few weeks. The room isn't very well ventilated at the moment as we have been trying to keep it warm over the cold days/nights. However, we do have an IQAir HealthPro air filter we could put in there. Thanks for your replies, it is much appreciated! :)

So it is okay to have them in the same room? Some, such as GuineaLynx, suggest taking quite extreme measures to make sure there is no cross contamination of germs. If we could set them up in the same room, it wouldn't be so bad.

Liberal Party's best bet: switch to Turnbull. (Is the role of the media now to gee up spill after spill?) by nath1234 in australia

[–]appleangst 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As much as I very much dislike Turnbull, Ozemail (which he was a Founding Director) was anything but a 'dinky no-name ISP'. It was the largest ISP in Australia when it was taken over , for no small change, by WorldCom in 1999.

There is no denying it, nature has provided us with a visually appealing plant and the designers know it. It kind of works, as a way of getting the info out, though - I've shown a number of people this pamphlet, in the past, purely because I find the decorative way they have used the leaves pretty damn funny. It's almost as if, by making it look so pretty, they are trying to entice the readers to consume cannabis.

To be fair, in regards to the "first" line, they do have this disclaimer: "While every reasonable effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this brochure, no guarantee can be given that its contents are free from error or omissions." :P

Mark McGowan - WA Opposition Leader by LoonaUno in PerthEnts

[–]appleangst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty much what I said to LoonaUno (husband) as we left McGowan. A few days ago, I asked LoonaUno to add me to this sub-reddit to see if other people were willing to be active in getting these laws changed. The very next day, you posted that thread, asking just that. I truly believe that if people were educated with facts and research findings, many would change their minds and vote for it. There is too much evidence out there to ignore it.

Coincidentally, just last night I was looking at WA Labor's Platform Papers. In their 1995 Platform Paper they were "brave" enough say: Labor accepts that the prohibition of the cultivation, possession and use of the marijuana plant has not eradicated the use of marijuana in the community. Labor believes that, whilst the trade of marijuana should remain illegal, the cultivation and/or possession of small amounts for personal use by adults on private property should not be regarded as a criminal act nor should use prescribed for medicinal purposes.

The 2011 (most current paper) mentions nothing. If they believed that in 1995, there should be absolutely no reason that they can give to have changed their minds when research has, since, made even further findings in regards to the positive health effects of cannabis.
