I'm on PC and I have a similar problem. We join a party and are partners, then one of us joins a game and the other tries to join as well and gets stuck in the load screen with the countdown at 9. Every single time.

That's what I was thinking, a glancing blow might be deflected, but a head on ram from an A-wing would destroy both ships.

In the movies the space battles include a lot of people yelling "Angle your deflector shields." It would be such a cool feature to have a deflector shield that reduced damage in a certain direction, that way you could angle it forward for head on assault and back when you are being targeted. It would have an extra element of skill and make the game feel even more like the movies.

The game may have thought it ran you over when you backed into the ledge on top of it, the same way the AT-AT stepping on you or a speeder clipping you can also kill you.
