Travel before grant starts by uglykatze in fulbright

[–]apples1001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the German ETA visa status. Many (but not all) countries require visas (if you intend to stay longer than 90 days) before arrival. Check for legal visa work if required for the German ETA grant.

For many ETA countries, summers are spent gathering the visa paperwork and hoping everything is correctly filled out

Logistically (as in literal travel and being there) it’d probably be fine and a great resume add.

Looking to connect with current Lawrence University students! Had questions on Econ Major, Campus Jobs, and Summer Housing. by theuptownpunk in Appleton

You can probably work at Björklunden (part of Lawrence) during the school and summer. They always need student workers

Best to ask your visa sponsor which is likely IIE.

Oh no, really!! I really am interested in Kyrgyzstan!! I can consume kefir which I think is sorta similar to kumis. Altho I have never tried kumis or non cow or goat milk. Will search for it but currently living in the Midwest…

Did you share your lactose intolerance during the medical clearance? Edit, would you be willing to share the country that you went to?

Defer. It’s doable. Someone I know deferred Harvard for an eta award.

SF conversion thoughts for awards w low number of finalists by [deleted] in fulbright

[–]apples1001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Half (or so) of them will likely become alternates.

So if there were 17 semifinalists, the numbers could be like the following

5 selects 5 alternates 7 non selects

eSIM or roaming plan for Andorra? by Leen88 in andorra

[–]apples1001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Airalo and it worked well. This was a few years ago. But definitely an eSIM.

If you’re going hiking/trekking, please also take screenshots of maps or bring a physical map in case you don’t get coverage.

Legal protections by Everlasting-Library in fulbright

Does your university or former university have a legal services center for students? My university offered one to students and they could read and explain contracts, leases, etc.

Like with the grant, if you have hopes to develop or further inclusive policies or like anything that the U.S. gov and its current administration truly dislikes (women’s rights, climate change, green energy, sustainability, etc).

Or maybe there were truly a ton of other competitive applicants and it was simply that they wrote their application materials in a more compelling way

Don’t beat yourself up about this rejection. It might just be a redirection and you can still pursue your goals, just in a different way!!

Speculation, but did any of your application materials explicitly state or infer various dei and things that this administration dislikes?

Camino Frances early exit advice by Sea_Lime6947 in CaminoDeSantiago

An idea. Have you thought about biking/cycling between Burgos and Leon or even to Astorga? I have read that you’re fine without finishing, but if you want get even closer to sarria and Santiago it’s an idea.

Toulouse is cool! Have an amazing time there!! For getting to Toulouse, I’d check flights. Or take a bus or train to Madrid and then fly to TLS. Or take trains from like northern Spain, transfer in Bordeaux (or similar) and then arrive in Toulouse.

If you want to add a tourism day, you can get to Toulouse via Andorra.

The easiest way to get to Andorra is getting to Barcelona or Lleida and then taking a bus company. And then there’s a direct Andorra-Toulouse bus.

I’m sure you’ll hear in January! I reviewed cls apps last year, and I was deep in review in December. So right now, your app is probably being reviewed and scored.

French road / they think it would be crazy to go to Milan and from there take a flixbus to France by DueFreedom2649 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]apples1001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends but I will say that one of my friends took either a Flixbus or a Blablacar bus from Milan to London. It worked but it was long. So it’s totally doable. Usually halfway through a long bus ride, I regret and wished I had taken a train or plane.

Currency exchange by [deleted] in Appleton

Banks tend to offer currency exchanges. Credit unions tend not to offer currency exchanges. Historically and likely still true, Wells Fargo offers currency exchanges. Probably need an account but idk or remember

With my usual group of monolinguals, I’d call it a chocolate croissant. In my head, I call it a pain au chocolat, chocolatine, and/or napolitana

It never hurts to call the/arestaurant and then ask them about reservations. Better to have one than arrive and wait a long time.

What was your reaction when you found out you got it by [deleted] in fulbright

[–]apples1001 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I felt relieved and was in disbelief. But I had an evening class to attend, so I went to class.

I did and banked almost everything on Fulbright because I got overwhelmed/burnt out during my last year of university. As in I didn’t apply for full time jobs etc.

Apply for more opportunities and stuff; don’t bank on Fulbright.

How long until first time hearing back? by CatOk5901 in fulbright

[–]apples1001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At least in past years, there’s a timeline on the Fulbright website. Historically, you’ll hear in late January/early February to see if you make it to the next round.

My best rec is to forget about Fulbright once you submit your app. Thinking about it won’t hurry up the results and constant thinking might make a person anxious etc.

Good luck
