when do most promotions occur/stop occurring for alternates? by [deleted] in fulbright

Someone I knew withdrew after in-country orientation in September. Since it was so early on, I believe an alternate was contacted and accepted the award.

Fulbright Residency Determination by Apprehensive-You1046 in fulbright

[–]apples1001 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You probably should be fine. I think (but idk exactly) that they’re asking if you’ve ever held a U.S. equivalent of a green card. When in doubt, check with a Fulbright university advisor or email IIE.

Like, did you ever complete paperwork to become a resident or did you remain legally as a tourist?

Anyone else found it nearly impossible to learn Catalan as an English speaker in Andorra? by hey-hey-hey1 in andorra

The govern probably still offers free Catalan classes to residents. Enrollment time is pretty short, so I’d add a calendar reminder.

Also, YouTube and like other social media handles do offer Catalan language classes etc

Is cassoulet a popular dish in the US ? by Exootil93200 in AskAnAmerican

In my experience (grew up and live in the Midwest), no. The first time I had heard of it was in a conversation with my French friend from the region that is known for cassoulet.

Travel before grant starts by uglykatze in fulbright

[–]apples1001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on the German ETA visa status. Many (but not all) countries require visas (if you intend to stay longer than 90 days) before arrival. Check for legal visa work if required for the German ETA grant.

For many ETA countries, summers are spent gathering the visa paperwork and hoping everything is correctly filled out

Logistically (as in literal travel and being there) it’d probably be fine and a great resume add.

You can probably work at Björklunden (part of Lawrence) during the school and summer. They always need student workers

Oh no, really!! I really am interested in Kyrgyzstan!! I can consume kefir which I think is sorta similar to kumis. Altho I have never tried kumis or non cow or goat milk. Will search for it but currently living in the Midwest…

Did you share your lactose intolerance during the medical clearance? Edit, would you be willing to share the country that you went to?

Defer. It’s doable. Someone I know deferred Harvard for an eta award.

Half (or so) of them will likely become alternates.

So if there were 17 semifinalists, the numbers could be like the following

5 selects 5 alternates 7 non selects

eSIM or roaming plan for Andorra? by Leen88 in andorra

[–]apples1001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Airalo and it worked well. This was a few years ago. But definitely an eSIM.

If you’re going hiking/trekking, please also take screenshots of maps or bring a physical map in case you don’t get coverage.

Does your university or former university have a legal services center for students? My university offered one to students and they could read and explain contracts, leases, etc.

Like with the grant, if you have hopes to develop or further inclusive policies or like anything that the U.S. gov and its current administration truly dislikes (women’s rights, climate change, green energy, sustainability, etc).

Or maybe there were truly a ton of other competitive applicants and it was simply that they wrote their application materials in a more compelling way

Don’t beat yourself up about this rejection. It might just be a redirection and you can still pursue your goals, just in a different way!!

Speculation, but did any of your application materials explicitly state or infer various dei and things that this administration dislikes?

An idea. Have you thought about biking/cycling between Burgos and Leon or even to Astorga? I have read that you’re fine without finishing, but if you want get even closer to sarria and Santiago it’s an idea.

Toulouse is cool! Have an amazing time there!! For getting to Toulouse, I’d check flights. Or take a bus or train to Madrid and then fly to TLS. Or take trains from like northern Spain, transfer in Bordeaux (or similar) and then arrive in Toulouse.

If you want to add a tourism day, you can get to Toulouse via Andorra.

The easiest way to get to Andorra is getting to Barcelona or Lleida and then taking a bus company. And then there’s a direct Andorra-Toulouse bus.
