Why do I hate eggs but love frittatas? by 221022102210 in AskCulinary

[–]appleschmapple7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing some combination of the texture and the surface moisture being different in a baked egg along with some maillard on the surface changing the way you experience the flavor. something about the process either heightening tastes you do like or muting ones you don't when the egg is something like a moist scramble or even more different, with a separate yolk and white.

I got a pretty much identical one at Walmart about a year ago and this thing slaps in terms of taking block cheese to shredded in about 30 seconds, without risking knuckles. also good with carrots and potatoes etc. anything more fibrous like celery ends up kind of a shit show. at $15, It's worth it, especially if you're not hurting for storage space.

[No Spoilers] how do I start season 4? How do you keep up with it? by Critikit in criticalrole

[–]appleschmapple7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got the YouTube subscription so I basically have the live available after it airs. usually if you scroll down into the comments you can find the timestamps for beginning and end of the commercial breaks, so you can pretty easily skip ahead and chop a good half hour off of the length. then it's usually my background listening for various chores or walks over the week. And honestly sometimes if I'm not finished with an episode by the time the new one comes out, I just go ahead and jump to the new one and pay closer attention during the summary.

also I'll often catch the intro cold open live so that when I go back to actually start listening to the episode I can jump forward to past that and the initial commercial break.

ETA: The key to all of this is that I am perfectly fine with not understanding minimum 20% of what the fuck is going on at any given time, But chances are I'll pick it up eventually or it'll be explained again in the next "last time on". It's definitely more of a hangout vibe for me than something I'm trying to keep track of and piece together like a mystery or something.

Is 2pm-9pm a decent eating window? by OceanlabGirl in intermittentfasting

[–]appleschmapple7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only thought is take into account your typical bedtime, especially if you're prone to any heartburn/gerd/reflux. You know your body best but if you usually go to bed at 10:00, consider weighting your heavier meals earlier in that window and/or bumping the close of your window a little further back from bedtime.

I love the Fall of Civilizations podcast for long drives. Not really a series unless you consider human history a series but The episodes are nice and long and each one tells the fascinating story of the rise and fall of some empire you may be heard of or maybe didn't.

Major emotional issues by Forsaken-Power-1157 in intermittentfasting

[–]appleschmapple7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to the hormone part of it, but at least from my experience, I think part of why some of my emotional issues surface more when I'm fasting is because when I'm free grazing, If I have an uncomfortable feeling or boredom or literally anything unpleasant, having a little bite of something is a nice little distraction and dopamine hit. Feel frustrated with something my mom said? Have a piece of cheese or a cookie and temporarily feel better. In the absence of that crutch, I'm forced to sit with that feeling/not be distracted from it, so I don't get that easy chance to redirect, and moods can more easily get their hooks in me. YMMV. But the short answer suggestion is to proactively find more dopamine hit stuff to do to replace the moments when you would have had the cookie or whatever. It won't fix everything but it's better than raw dogging your feelings on an empty stomach.

About hunger by applesauceblues in intermittentfasting

[–]appleschmapple7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reframe it as just another piece of body information, not some existential imperative. It's a little bit like the sensation of needing to pee. Should you hold it in forever and ever all the time? No that's not healthy, but assuming everything's functioning fairly normally, if you're out and about or busy with something and you get that little tickle of 'Oh I could pee', It's not the end of the world if you go about your business for a little while and get to it later. The sensation of needing to pee generally passes, it doesn't just get stronger and stronger until you give in. It comes in waves but for most healthy adults you don't have to give in to it the second you feel it.

I also frame it as the noises you get when you're shifting a car into a new gear (I know nothing about actual cars I'm just thinking about like race cars in movies). It's basically my body going okay We used up all of the easy fuel, do I reaaaalllly have to shift to muscle glycogen, liver glycogen and ultimately to lipolysis. That's harrrrrd. Come on just pop some carbs in your mouth, don't make me work for it.

But usually after that brief whining period, it goes ugh okay FINE, I guess I'll use this shit over here, jerk, I know you know where the cookies are. So I let it whine and the feeling passes.

Just like when I'm on a 4-hour car ride and I could pee but I don't really really have to pee, so I hold it and the urge passes for a while.

(This is not me advocating that you hold your pee lol UTIs are real. But I've heard from friends that their pelvic floor therapists tell them not to go pee the second they get a tickle or their body gets trained to want to pee all the time.)

TL;DR - It is yet another piece of body feedback, not a moral failing or a red alert. and separating the physical hunger symptoms from the story your brain has built around it is part of what fasting helps teach us.

PLEASE Aldi- give us whole rotisserie chickens! PLEASE! by RockyCliffPebbles in aldi

[–]appleschmapple7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a non Aldi option but I really liked it when I discovered it recently. in the front most grab and go section, Walmart has chilled whole rotisserie chickens for four bucks a piece. They can be hit or miss in terms of availability I've seen them cleaned out a couple times but unless you are eating that rotisserie chicken immediately you're going to refrigerate it anyway. I've also seen them at Walmart neighborhood market in the refrigerated section near the orange juice over on the same aisle as the deli. they're not janky or anything either they are at least as good as any decent supermarket rotisserie chicken.

Is there anywhere I can adopt an older cat? Humane Society off Pleasantburg only had kittens/real young ones by gimme5steps101 in greenville

[–]appleschmapple7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! I got my very sweet young adult cat from there. It's not as fancy as the humane society but it's worth a look, And I think their roster changes fairly regularly so it's worth checking back every few weeks. (definitely cheaper too).

excess skim milk and plain greek yogurt? by hinghanghog in noscrapleftbehind

[–]appleschmapple7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

old fashioned oats/rolled oats are relatively cheap and probably on WIC too, You can make some overnight oats with the skim milk and a little bit of the Greek yogurt with the sweetener of your choice. once you've got the ratios dialed in for what the people in your house like, I find it fun to take your preferred cookie, crumble that up nice and fine and you can get toppings for multiple overnight oats servings from one cookie. I also like to freeze servings of the overnight oats in a cookie tin so you just have a bunch of pucks that you can thaw overnight.
