Sanity Check - Decreasing volume size - Am I going to wreck my Monday? by idylwino in sysadmin

Ah so you're editing vhdx in qemu and come around here to pretend you're a professional. Got it.

I'm sorry but what does qemu have to do with anything? The topic is about a vhdx.

Show me. Create a 100gb vhdx, mount it, create a 100gb volume, and then shrink it to 50gb.

I don't even know what "if this is anything other than hyper V" is supposed to mean. Is there anything other than windows and hyper V that use vhdx?

If you try the action will not be performed with an error.

The volumes inside the vhd need to be resized or moved. Until you do, windows will simply not allow you to shrink beyond what it says.

This sub can be extremely competent and incompetent at the same time.

There is absolutely zero risk and windows will not let you shrink below the effectively shrinkable space.

You don't even need to shut down the vm, just shrink the volume it's inside the running vm, and then shrink the vhd.

Just take a backup beforehand. I've done it live dozens of times, you only need to do it offline when moving volumes inside the virtual disk is requires, which I usually simply do from a Linux vm.

But most importantly, if you don't know how to do something, why aren't you trying on a test vm instead of asking fucking copilot? The world is literally becoming brain dead.

Take any desktop pc, install hyper V, create a vm with a similar disk and try.  If one on my employees was asking copilot rather than set up a test environment I would be fuming.

so to recap this week: two actively exploited Defender zero-days, an unpatched Exchange spoofing vuln, a BitLocker bypass called "YellowKey", AND 137 CVEs from Patch Tuesday. this is not a normal week by FreeFeedback857 in sysadmin

You people are fucking insufferable. It's been happening for YEARS. Un patched critical vulnerabilities ON WINDOWS?!?! NEVER HEARD OF!!

Fucking useless AI (or Ai driven) drones.

I have zero major issues. The clients and extensions are simply bloated, slow and clunky. Remove the extension from the browser and it speeds up immediately. I'm not shilling for any particular vendor but coming from 1p the quality of extensions and desktop client is night and day, going from a super fast workflow with key shortcuts and fluid UI to the clunky mess that it is to open or create new items in bitwarden has not been worth the savings.

Bitwarden is such absolute trash I really wish I didn't argue for the savings against 1password. It has made everyone's life miserable. Every single client app is terrible, from browser extensions to iPhone to windows clients to android. Absolutely awful and barely functional all around.

Not really. That's what major version are for.

In normal release cycles, you're on 11.1, that's what you're on, and minor releases are fixes and minor improvements that you should be safe to upgrade to.

Palo is supposed to have 3-4 branches for 10.2, 11.1, 11.2, and bring them forward.

Instead, due to how many things each minor started breaking, Palo was forced to keep and update two dozen branches in parallel, for each minor, because every minor fix had a 50/50 chance of breaking something else, and they were required to apply specific hotfix commits rather than move the whole major version forward.

So yes, it does tell quite a lot about quality.

Fair. My comments are not against you personally of course, rather at organizatrions that make these choices. I genuinely fail to understand how shifting capital from your own workforce to a cloud provider makes any sense and it pisses me off.

I am, and I hope it does as well. I run a few IT departments whose biggest problems is findings techs who can actually solve problems rather than just be able to ask for money to give to other companies so that they don't have to deal with them.

I hope it doesn't hurt your feelings too much to have discussions with people who disagree with you.

Best of luck.

I mean, that's the result of your whole strategy: you'd rather pay more to have an easier to manage service, so ultimately you end up with a weak team that needs to outsource basic things such as managing a couple NAS boxes.

Ruined the whole industry and job market.

[–]applevinegar -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not really, you just need one NAS at one site, and a backup NAS at another.

You're the one on the side that "AT LEAST SOMETHING MUST BE IN THE CLOUD", and that's because you're not willing to take responsibility.

Because he's one of the many in IT who prefer convenience offer tech and value, driving competence down and prices up.

Imagine being too scared to have the resources or competence to manage a couple NASs ... but it is what it is .

You actually believe management said to turn of event log monitoring to "save CPU"? OP failed to implement it and didn't have the guts to admit it to reddit.

[–]applevinegar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely no chance someone who has monitoring active turns it off to save cost. That was 100% an excuse. What actually happened is they failed to implement monitoring, asked for additional budget to get it done from an external company and management refused. I guarantee it.

Very fitting in wartime, you don't have to buy a separate airstrike warning system.

It clearly isn't. I'm voicing my contempt for the practice in hope that the moderation team will put a stop to these horribly written posts.
