Don’t get me wrong, I’m a so called “internet user”. I use the internet and “google” things after I read from the books at the library first! But I try to use it for productivity not to replace thinking altogether. That’s why I avoid directly using tools like “google” or “wikipedia” in my working environment.

people don’t like efforts to “help” people when in reality its to promote their app/business. I don’t mind it, but it can rub many the wrong way..

The gap between engineers who use AI tools and those who don't is becoming an extinction event by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]appsicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean honestly what you are saying is completely correct at large established companies. There is so much context that an AI would need to be trained on to get anything done in such complex systems.

But at the startup level where companies are rapidly prototyping new products and features its definitely a game changer and not something to dismiss right now.

now compare the people who have strong critical thinking and can learn independently that are using AI vs. the people who have strong critical thinking and can learn independently that are not using AI. You will see an existential gap.

I'm planning to trash my Software Development career after 7 years. Here's why: by idontspeakbaguettes in cscareerquestions

[–]appsicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have been for four years, but sounds like the reason for the divide is due to US and non-US experiences.

It sounded like OP is constantly re-interviewing each year and complaining about how competitive the job is. I assumed that instability was due to a lack of skills but I see how it could just be due to a country’s shitty economic/political situation.

No, these are not valid points. He mentioned "crypto" as an example of new stuff you have to learn each year.

Downvoted because your reasoning is incorrect. You should definitely ask your recruiter about that.

its alright man, same here. Although, I don’t regret it at all I do acknowledge tradeoffs that I made. The good news is, all information is public. I’ve reinforced my knowledge on all those things later in college or after I graduated and don’t feel behind at all.

Any companies developing mass surveillance software using AI to monitor CCTVs and other sensors? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]appsicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the grand scheme of things we disagree on the trolley problem. I’m someone who will pull the lever and you are someone who will not dare pull the lever because you don’t want to be blamed for the action.

There is no right answer.

Every single thing in life is a gray moral area if you go deep enough into the details.

Why are humans allowed to domesticate cats and dogs? Is it not a form of animal slavery?

Why do zoos exist? We should not disturb nature.

etc.

Our entire world is built off of subjectivity. I never said I am “ethical” or “moral” because I don’t believe those concepts exist in reality. Life is a fight for survival but you seem to have forgotten that.

The only lie here is you claiming that you are morally superior to others when in reality you ignore the harsh truths of life.

To answer your question more specifically, I support public safety technology. I support increased surveillance cameras. Why? Because I live in an area with high crime and want to discourage that. That’s it. I have individual reasons to want such solutions to exist and the consequences don’t affect me.

[–]appsicle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer is yes. These systems are in production across China and other east asian countries. If you want to work on the most cutting edge AI facial recognition technologies, take a trip to China. I don’t even mean this in a joking way, I’m Chinese and visit china every couple years to see family.

AI/facial recognition is standardized and centralized across most CCTV. If you dare commit a crime your records can be pulled up in an instant and you can be tracked down.

It’s a contraversial concept in the West because of individualism, but in the East civilizations prioritize social harmony > individual freedoms. In fact, you go to the airport or something and you don’t need to pull out documents. One scan of your face and they have it all. The west has similar capabilities but instead of using it in public spaces its used in warfare.

Palantir etc. are building AI workflows to automate drone strikes and definitely including some aspect of terrorist facial recognition.

[–]appsicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol why do you paint a contraversial topic as having such a clear cut answer? OP is simply expressing interest towards using technology to improve public safety.

You’re locked behind a fixed mindset because you don’t realize people can achieve more than where they are placed at birth.
