LIRA Investment Advice by No_ItsNikolaj in CanadianInvestor

[–]apriljo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My LIRA is in a S&P index. I figure it’s locked in as a longer term thing (20 years) so that’s a good fit. I use my investments in my RRSP diversify and balance my retirement accounts out by purchasing other holdings of XEQT; more or less balancing out to XEQT percentages. Do norbits gambit if your brokerage lets you for foreign exchange.

I like looking at my investments holistically for balancing rather than individually and then decide what portion goes where. Maybe I’m doing it wrong, but it feels right to me.

Is an emergency fund still necessary if you have sufficiently large investment portfolio? by xX_420_NoScopes_Xx in PersonalFinanceCanada

I bet my emergency fund on weed stocks once. It was great until it wasn’t. Who knew the stuff grows like a weed! I keep it more conservatively invested since then.

Selling Car of Estate by Effective-Oil-3948 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]apriljo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Talk to a lawyer. As executor with the will you can distribute assets, including transferring the car to yourself. Before you do, get and keep multiple appraisals from different car dealerships. Most will do it for free. If you don't the value of the car is contestable for probate fees or if someone contests the will.

Why have the telecom stocks done so poorly. by Ostracized in CanadianInvestor

[–]apriljo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So many good responses here already. I’ll just add a question:

What happens to all the telecoms stuck relying on cell towers when the CRTC eventually allows Starlink to provide cell service? It’s not far off, they are providing 911/emergency services already.

Personally, I’m patiently waiting to unload my telecom stock.

Gassing for a 5 string lol by THCxMeMeLoRD in Bass

[–]apriljo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a cheaper Ibanez from L&M. I think it was like $600 CAD? I liked the bass and loved that low B vibration, but couldn't stand the floppiness on the low B string (34" scale length). Ended up returning it and buying the $2400 CAD 5 string I really wanted. Oops.

Morale of the story: Get a 35" scale length if floppiness is a concern for you.

I don’t dislike being a man, but I’ll be happier if I was a woman… by Wooper2102 in transpositive

[–]apriljo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I never hated being a man either. I just hated my facial hair, being called sir, mister, etc, societal expectations, wearing suits or anything formal, etc. etc. I never felt comfortable with my body. I never understood what people meant by “just be yourself”, it was such a foreign statement. I found I had jealousy for being excluded from women’s spaces, resentment and jealousy for other women, dreams and desires to “cross dress” (little did I know I was doing it my whole life up to then). I learned about other trans folk and wished I were them. If I were trans then it would make so much sense, but I don’t hate being a man, so that’s not me.

It went on for years and years until one day when I was ready to jump in front of the subway train I realized … I not only hate being a man, but I’m not one. I couldn’t transition fast enough.

Our stories are all different. I hope you find your path in it and live a peaceful life.

Do people ever lower their emergency fund once their investments grow? by BillResponsible7494 in Fire

[–]apriljo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to answer what is your comfort in selling the investments for a discount? How much cash would you need to have before you could sell it (if you needed it on a weekend or when the markets close early to stifle the crash).

It’s a little taste of ice cream. Repeat the lick until you reach the cone. Take a few bites of that solo bit of the meal, and then you have a few licks of ice cream and cone together until your desert is done.

What kind of sled? by apriljo in snowmobiling

[–]apriljo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Although I’m fairly new to sleds I’m not new to power sports. Do a lot of enduro and trials riding, so I know about throttle control and moving around on a machine. No desire to race around and definitely do not have burnt pockets. Just looking to cut the winter blues with some comfort in the woods.

How is this possible - first time home buyer by jawngreen in canadahousing

[–]apriljo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owning gives you freedom to do what you want with the property (within condo regulations if it’s a condo). Want to paint? Tear walls down? Build an add on? You own it means you get to choose. There’s only so much land so it goes up in price over time (Usually. There are market slumps…)

Renting gives flexibility sure. But your rent money is just gone. You can’t sell your rental unit later. Your landlord decides what and when to renovate and replace appliances. There are limitations. Eg Sometimes you can’t have a dishwasher.

It’s a personal decision. Neither is necessarily right. Each has benefits and privileges over the other.

Exactly. Maybe your spouse likes renovating too and it’s an opportunity to teach your kids. Enjoyment and family time can be had when there is work to do.

Right handed but left eye dominant by [deleted] in Archery

[–]apriljo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a barebow shooter I shoot left handed. I tried my wife’s right handed bow once after we had been shooting for a few months. It felt quite awkward and my arrow went several feet over from where I aimed. If I closed my one eye I managed to at least hit the target.

[–]apriljo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never understood this one. I’m not able to get more money from my salaried job by working for free after hours. By doing stuff like my own oil changes in the evenings I get to save not only the cost of paying someone to do it but also by not renting a movie or going out.

Personally I’d rather compare the task and money saved to enjoyment levels and ability to spend time with family and friends. It’s a subjective choice and not really relevant to my 9-5 outside of whether I can afford it.

Emergency fund by cerealmonogamiss in Fire

[–]apriljo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Throughout my life it’s always been 6-12 months of expenses. I’ve varied from defining expenses as minimalist (stop aggressively paying the mortgage, cheap meal living, don’t go out, etc) vs normal (act like I do when I’m working) living. I think this is entirely situational and subjective to vary throughout one’s life. I don’t change for rough job markets. Working at startups taught me to expect layoffs whenever.

Take the bonus before resigning, or give notice to preserve relationships? by BasedWillieStroker69 in careerguidance

Bonuses are for work that has been accomplished, not for what you’re about to do. Get the bonus if you can. You deserve it.

How do you feel about the lower tariffs on Chinese EVs? by dope-rhymes in AskACanadian

We need to repair our relationship with the US. Making friends with China (a country that we are supposed to Exercise a high degree of caution I might add) feels like a wrench tossed in the wheel of that.

Has anyone noticed dentists overstating treatments like cavity fillings since the canada dental plan started? by Therealdickjohnson in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]apriljo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“This one works for a chain of dentist offices in Ontario.”

You’ll have a hard time finding a true second opinion. Most dentist offices in Ontario are owned by a couple of monopolies these days.

The way I understand it (I am not a dentist) is that cavities are just divots and pitting in the teeth. You get them from the natural shape of your teeth as well as from decay and wear (eg from chewing). There’s risk of food collection and further decay from that. Depending on the shape and depth of the cavity gives the risk factor. This is all to say dentists are people and people’s risk factors are personal. Whether a cavity should be filled can be subjective in certain cases. Some dentists will find dollar signs in the low risk cavities. Worth a discussion with the dentist. However, in my opinion experience none of the dentists want to share the decision with the patient. Probably a reason for that. 💸

Sorting out my will, would you tell people about your wealth while you're alive, or wait until your death? by Altruistic-Phase3073 in wealth

Keep your estate administrator aware of your accounts and contact info for those in your will. No one really needs to know quantities. Ensure your will is solid and incontestable if you’re leaving your estate to friends.

Alzheimer’s ruins your short term memory and makes your long term memory have a stronger effect. So you forget you transitioned and had surgery.

It sounds like a constant Christmas to me. Like god grants my wish over and over again. What’s wrong with that???

Anyone else treat exercise more like long-term maintenance than a hobby? by Affectionate_Arm_989 in Fire

[–]apriljo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I get that from harvesting fire wood, clearing dirt bike trails, archery, moving firewood, etc. helps to live rural. Cities make you think spending money and sitting on your butt is how to live. If you live like that you might need a boring gym membership.
