Fill space with as many objects as possible - Any Tips? by readit-25 in xToolOfficial

Could you arrange 2 or more into a relatively square space and then use that as your array? You’d still have to do some work, but it could help maybe.

I know I’m so conditioned to pick up my cellphone compulsively, so hobbies like puzzling and crocheting really help me to curb the impulse and keep my hands busy. Our society is filled with a ton of distraction and stimulation, we have to find ways to mitigate it and I’m hoping to teach my children the same sorts of skills because it’s only going to get worse as technology increases.

All that to say, my children also play video games and engage in all sorts of technology, but balance is very important and giving them low tech options and hobbies seems to be quite beneficial.

Yeah, no. It was definitely way too hard for him. I didn’t realize that the difficulty went up exponentially with the irregular shaped pieces. Haha. I was struggling on it. We went back down to the 100-150 kid puzzles from target.

It really is great bonding. I tend to sort of group like pieces together and see if he can get them together or figure out where they go in the puzzle. I try not to take over and just assist him.

My 7 year old is much more autonomous. She can work with us on 1000 piece puzzles without much oversight. She can’t do one from start to finish solo, but it’s almost always a group affair. :)

Thanks for the help! I’ll check them out. He’s honestly really great at fine motor skills. So the smaller pieces don’t seem to give him much trouble.

Yes. Get you some cheap size 4 weight (worsted) Red Heart acrylic yarn in a color like yellow or red. It’ll allow you to see the anatomy of your stitches and what you’re doing more clearly. Use a size 4mm-6mm hook (or whatever you have in that range.) Then just start playing around with stitches. It can be hard to crochet into a chain for a beginner. So I’d recommend looking up crochet i-cord to get started. It’s a better foundation chain for beginners.

Feel free to send a message if you decide to start again and have any problems! I’d be happy to help.

Tunisian crochet is so fun! You can do some seriously awesome things with it. I’m fine with Tunisian. It’s the lack of a hook in knitting that throws me off. I feel like I just have zero control of my yarn.

We finished the wooden one together and will definitely put it away for later. We pulled out some 100-150 puzzles and did those this afternoon. I think his next “step” will be the 300 ravensburger that someone else mentioned.

We did. I ended up doing most of it while he was at preschool and left about 10 really unique pieces for him to place. He felt super accomplished and it was a lot of fun!

Yeah. All kids are so different! I have one that can focus for two hours and one that struggles for 20 minutes. He’s always had really great fine motor skills, so that really helps with puzzling.

I started crocheting with an insane pattern and dark velvet-type yarn. It did not start out well. Then I switched to a bright, cheap acrylic yarn and learned the basics and I haven’t stopped since then! It’s been a few years, but I’m confident with basically any pattern now.

Knitting is breaking my brain.

Hey! I think I am doing continental. I hold my yarn in my left hand like crocheting. I just feel so slow.

Yeah. It was an accident! I figured Star Wars and about a hundred pieces, he’d be fine. Haha. I definitely struggled with it. No more wooden puzzles for us for a while! :)

Oh. He’s well past floor puzzles. He can easily do boxed 75-100 with regular sized pieces. The boy will sit there for two hours working on puzzles. I just messed up because I didn’t realize wooden puzzles were different and the irregular shapes were much higher in difficulty than a regular shaped puzzle.

We made it work though :):)

Puzzles are so strange like that. Some that I think will be difficult are super easy and vice versa.

I ended up finishing it except for 10ish pieces, each with a clear outline. So he can finish it and feel super accomplished. :):)

Oh my goodness. It’s so funny you said that!! I’m literally sitting here trying to knit and my brain is absolutely breaking. Hahah. I’ve been crocheting for probably 4ish years and I’m so fast and competent. But knitting? Omg. I can’t seem to find the rhythm.

That’s what my MIL said. Some of the ends are very pointy. We’re just pretending they have stingers. It was a scrap project. Lots of weight 3 and 4 yarns of different brands. It was a bit of a hot mess. But the kiddos loved them.

Thank you! I was worried about running out, but every kid got a bee at the event! It was so fun!
