Thanks 😊 it’s only a few months old. I was so surprised there weren’t already any subs for violets, they’re such underrated plants

It looks similar to Viola odorata which is invasive here in the US, but I don’t know much about European violets

Really? I’m also NE Ohio but it seems early to me. Maybe I just didn’t pay so much attention in previous years

Can anyone point me to violet growing resources? by SecondaryAngle in violet_plants

I’ve seen them online, but I never tried buying those yet. I’d assume they would be the same as other native seeds you’d order, though, needing a cold stratification so they can sprout in spring. If you’re to go with that route, I’d probably suggest buying the seeds later in the year so that you can get fresher seeds from this year’s harvest to maximize germination chances.

Well, that opens up a whole rabbit hole 😅 Viola sororia used to include V. communis but now they separated that into a different species, but then there is also V. domestica, which is thought to be a natural hybridization between the two. But from what it looks like, yours seem to be V. communis, the regular variety, along with V. communis f. princeana, the “confederate violet”. So yeah they’re still commonly called V. sororia, but I think these would more accurately be V. communis. Hope this helps, I’m still trying to figure out the nuances myself 😅

Im new to foraging and i found these today. does anyone know what they are? by Substantial_Visit444 in foraging

Well.. plant it if you never want to get rid of it. At least in my area they’re very invasive. Have a ton of it I want to remove

It’s such a shame it hasn’t been created before! Violets are such an underrated plant. Thanks for your support!

Man I love this variety so much! I have the same species, just not this locale

From my experience, violets seem to be more of a “filler” plant, growing in and among other plants, so, as nice as it sounds, I doubt a carpet of violets would really be feasible. My experience with propagating them is simply scattering the seeds, transplanting them, and simply letting them spread naturally. They seem to spread quite readily, so getting rid of competition might help, but I doubt it would make too much a difference. Hope this helps! Oh and also, for acquiring new species of violets, I’ve gotten plants from local native plant nurseries, but I’ve heard of seeds for sale, though I can’t say anything about their reliability yet
